A smart speaker can play music conveniently without delivering the version, quality setting, or listening experience you expect. The format label alone is not proof that lossless audio is reaching your speaker—and lossless does not guarantee an obvious improvement. Before replacing hardware, check the recording, service settings, connection, device compatibility, and room.
Why smart-speaker music can disappoint
What you hear depends on a chain: the recording and mix, the version your streaming service offers, your account and quality settings, the route audio takes to the speaker, device support, network stability, speaker placement, the room, and your own hearing and preferences. A weak link anywhere in that chain can matter more than a headline format specification.
Lossless describes how audio is encoded; it does not promise that every listener will hear a dramatic change. Spotify puts it plainly: “Lossless offers high technical fidelity, but it doesn’t always translate to a dramatically different listening experience for everyone.” Spotify’s audio-quality guidance also notes that many factors affect what you hear.
What lossless on a smart speaker actually requires
For lossless playback, the service must offer the track in that quality, your account and playback device must support it, the relevant settings must be enabled, and the connection route and network must carry it. Spotify describes its Lossless tier as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz; that is a service specification, not a guarantee that the complete playback chain or your experience will match the number in every circumstance. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for its best lossless listening experience. That recommendation applies to Spotify’s guidance, not universally to every service or device. - Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Spotify Lossless is for Premium subscribers and is not available for music videos, podcasts, or audiobooks. Spotify also says Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can differ in whether they support lossless playback. Check the route you are actually using rather than assuming that a lossless setting in the app means lossless is arriving at the speaker. Spotify Support
How to tell whether lossless is playing
Check the service, track, and account
- Confirm the account tier includes the feature. Spotify Lossless requires Premium.
- Check that the item is a music track available in the target quality; Spotify excludes music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks from Lossless.
Check the speaker and controller
For Spotify Lossless on Sonos, the product and controller must be compatible and current. Sonos says S1-only products and the S1 controller app do not support Spotify Lossless. Its documented feature requires Premium and enabling the option in Spotify and for the Sonos product. Playback can be started through the Sonos app or Spotify Connect. Inspect the settings and playback indicator
Check Spotify’s audio-quality setting and the device-specific setting. Spotify notes that third-party-device quality may need to be changed while connected through Spotify Connect. Sonos provides a device-selection and quality menu, and its interface displays a Lossless badge when lossless is active. That badge is a more useful confirmation than the service’s general quality preference alone. Spotify Support and Sonos Support
Sonos says: “Selecting lossless quality for one Sonos product will automatically enable it for any other Sonos products in the household.” If you have multiple Sonos speakers, account for that shared setting when checking playback. Sonos Support

Verify the connection and network
Use a stable connection and confirm whether your chosen route—such as Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, or AUX—supports lossless for that service and device combination. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps for its own lossless listening experience; it is not a general minimum for all platforms. Spotify Support
Why you may not hear a difference
- The comparison is not like for like. Different masters, mixes, versions, or playback levels can obscure what the format itself changes.
- The playback chain may not be lossless end to end. A setting, device, or connection route can prevent the higher-quality version from reaching the speaker.
- Your room and placement shape the result. A speaker’s position and the room’s acoustics affect what reaches your ears, regardless of file specification.
- The difference may be subtle or inaudible to you. Spotify explicitly cautions that higher technical fidelity does not always mean a dramatically different experience for everyone.
For a fair personal comparison, use the same recording or master, keep the volume and speaker position the same, and replay a short passage. This can help you decide whether the difference matters to you; it cannot establish what every listener will hear.

Apple HomePod: distinguish Lossless from Dolby Atmos
Apple documents HomePod playback for Apple Music Lossless tracks when available. Dolby Atmos support is model-specific, and HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. Lossless and spatial playback are different features, so confirm the exact HomePod model and the track’s availability rather than treating one format label as evidence of the other. Consider changing hardware only after checking the service, settings, route, network, and placement. A new speaker is not automatically an audible upgrade just because it supports a higher-resolution format. Choose according to the services you use, the controls and apps you prefer, your room, budget, and whether you want single-speaker, stereo-pair, or spatial playback.

For example, Sonos lists Era 300 and selected other products as spatial-audio capable. Sonos also says that grouping a non-compatible speaker switches playback to stereo. A mixed group may therefore change the playback mode you intended. This is a compatibility consideration, not evidence that one product sounds better than another. Sonos Support: spatial audio
Quick Recap
A practical order for troubleshooting
- Confirm that the track/version and account support the target quality.
- Confirm the speaker and controller app support the feature; for Sonos Spotify Lossless, rule out S1-only products and the S1 app.
- Check both the streaming service’s quality preference and the device-specific setting. For Sonos, look for the Lossless badge during playback.
- Check the audio route and Wi-Fi stability; do not assume Bluetooth, Connect, or AUX behave identically.
- Compare the same recording and passage at the same level and position.
- Only then weigh a stereo pair, spatial-capable device, or different speaker against your room, services, and budget.
