Googlebooks have made a stronger first impression than Chromebooks ever did for Android Central Managing Editor Derrek Lee: after trying HP’s Googlebook 14 and Dell’s XPS Googlebook, both powered by Snapdragon X Elite, he says he is seriously considering switching from Windows. That is an early hands-on reaction—not a long-term recommendation or independent performance review. Whether switching makes sense for you depends most on your Android phone, your essential apps, and the specific model you choose.

What Googlebook is—and how it differs from Chromebook

Google describes Googlebook as a premium laptop category that brings together Android and ChromeOS technology, with closer integration for Android phones. Chromebooks remain ChromeOS laptops, positioned for simpler everyday use. Google has not established a more specific operating-system architecture in the cited product information, so it is safest to think of Googlebook as a new category and feature set rather than assume it is simply a Chromebook with a different name.

Google says current Chromebook owners do not need to migrate: existing devices are not being discontinued, and Google’s stated Chromebook policy is a 10-year automatic update commitment. Google’s Googlebook FAQ explains the category distinction, while its Chromebook support FAQ addresses existing devices.

What the two Snapdragon laptops were like

In a September 26, 2026 hands-on, Lee tried an HP Googlebook 14 and a Dell XPS Googlebook, each with a Snapdragon X Elite processor. He reported that both demo units had 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, fingerprint sensors, and Google’s Glowbar. He found the Glowbar’s functions somewhat limited at the time.

Lee’s article also disclosed that Qualcomm provided travel and lodging for the event, with no additional compensation or prepublication input. Read the Android Central hands-on.

Why phone integration could make switching worthwhile

Google’s central pitch is continuity between a Googlebook and an Android phone. The company describes starting a task on a phone and continuing it on the laptop, viewing phone apps on the larger screen, and accessing phone files without a separate transfer. That could be useful if your daily work already revolves around Android and you regularly move between devices.

Google Store says Android phone compatibility requires Android 17 or later; some features may also require current software on both devices. Check the Google Store phone-integration details for the requirements that apply to your devices and region before buying.

Check your apps before leaving Windows

Google says Googlebooks support Android apps from Google Play and names apps including Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, BandLab, and Netflix. It also describes Microsoft 365 workflows for opening, editing, downloading, and saving Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Availability can vary, and some Microsoft 365 functions may require a subscription. These product statements do not establish that every Windows program or workflow has an equivalent on Googlebook. Review Google’s app and Microsoft 365 information.

Processor choice may matter for Android apps. Tom’s Hardware reported Google’s statement that most Android apps run smoothly, but some may not perform as well on Intel models as on Qualcomm models. That is a reason to verify a must-have app on the exact model—not evidence that Intel Googlebooks cannot run Android apps. For any tool you depend on for work, check the developer’s support information and confirm the needed features, files, and peripherals work on your intended configuration. If your reason for switching is mainly a faster or more convenient browser, note that Chrome is also available on Snapdragon-powered, Arm-compatible Windows PCs. Google announced an optimized Chrome browser for those devices in March 2024; that does not mean every Windows application is universally compatible with Arm. Google’s Chrome announcement covers that browser support.

Battery claims are not comparable test results

Google Store advertises up to 18 hours for the Dell XPS Googlebook, but the accessed product text did not state the test details. Dell separately claims up to 16 hours of Netflix streaming for a test configuration with Snapdragon X Elite, a 2.5K LCD, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. These are manufacturer figures with different contexts, not independent measurements and not results from Lee’s short hands-on. Google Store and Dell’s battery information provide the respective claims.

Should you switch from Windows?

Lee’s reaction is a useful signal that Googlebook caught the attention of someone who had not been drawn to Chromebooks, but it does not answer whether the category is ready for your workload. The hands-on did not establish long-term battery life, reliability, sustained performance, or compatibility with an individual reader’s software.

  • Googlebook is worth investigating if Android phone continuity is valuable to you and your required apps and workflows are confirmed on the exact model.
  • Keep Windows for now if your work depends on Windows-only software, peripherals, or features you have not verified on Googlebook.
  • Do not replace a Chromebook just because Googlebook launched. Google says existing Chromebooks remain supported under its stated 10-year automatic update policy.

For a decision between the two previewed laptops, weigh the display you prefer against the reported prices, then confirm the retail configuration and current availability in your region. The HP OLED and Dell matte LCD observations are from Lee’s hands-on; they are not a substitute for checking the display and configuration on the actual model you plan to buy.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
