Simple YT Style Player is a local-file media player built around one idea: keep the playback controls that VLC users rely on, but put them behind a cleaner, YouTube-style interface. It does not stream from YouTube or any other online service. It plays files stored on your device, and according to its developer’s write-up it does so across MKV, MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV and other formats.
The project was described by its developer, Akshay Jatin Solanki, in a DEV Community article dated October 1, 2026. Everything below about features, platforms and design comes from that article and is the author’s own description. The project’s repository and a current release page could not be confirmed at the time of writing, so treat the download side as unverified until you find a build yourself.
Why the project exists
Solanki’s starting point is familiar to anyone who has used VLC: it plays almost anything, but its interface is dense. Choosing a second audio language or switching to an embedded subtitle track means digging through menus. He wanted to keep the breadth of VLC while making those everyday actions quicker to reach.

What the app is, and what it is not
The article presents Simple YT Style Player as a software media player for files on your own storage. Three things follow from that:
- It is not a YouTube client. Despite the name, which refers to the interface style, it does not browse or stream online video.
- It is aimed at people who already have video files, such as downloaded movies, recordings or rips, and want a more pleasant way to play them.
- Its value is ease of use on top of a conventional playback engine, so the main question is whether its interface suits you better than VLC’s.
A representative workflow: a multi-track MKV
The article’s main example is a long MKV file containing several audio languages and embedded subtitles. The workflow it describes is straightforward: open the file, choose the audio or subtitle track you want, then control playback with touch gestures or on-screen buttons.
The point of the example is that the tracks are read from the file itself. According to the author, the player exposes embedded subtitle and audio tracks without needing separate subtitle files alongside the video. This is the scenario where a simplified interface can save the most effort, because multi-track files are common in anime, foreign films and archived recordings.

On the desktop build, the article also describes file associations, auto-hiding controls, high-DPI support and keyboard shortcuts. The exact shortcut set is not listed in the article, so check the project’s documentation once you have a build.

The article names two release targets. Both are stated as targets, and neither has been checked against a current published build.

The article says the project is open source under the MIT licence and points readers to GitHub releases. Those statements could not be checked against the repository for this piece. Mac and Linux builds are not mentioned in the article, so do not assume they exist.

According to the article, the project started as an Electron application using HTML for the Windows desktop. It was later rebuilt as a Rust and Tauri 2 application. The current design has three layers:

- Shared interface: vanilla HTML, CSS and JavaScript, used on both platforms inside a Tauri 2 shell.
- Core logic: Rust handles the main media operations.
- Decoding: FFmpeg runs as a separate sidecar process on Windows, while Android uses FFmpegKit inside the app process through JNI.
The two decoding paths explain much of the difference between the platforms. A sidecar process on Windows keeps the decoder separate from the interface, while an in-process library on Android avoids shipping a separate executable on a phone.

On Android, a file picker usually returns a content:// URI rather than an ordinary file path. A WebView cannot simply hand that address to a video engine as if it were a local file. Seeking and buffering also need the engine to request specific byte ranges, which a plain URI does not provide.
The article describes the solution: the app resolves the selected file and serves it through a local loopback HTTP connection. The video engine then requests byte ranges from that local server, which allows seeking and buffering to work. This is the implementation the author reports; it is worth knowing about if you run into playback or seeking problems on Android, since it is the layer where they would originate.
Who the app is likely to suit
Based on the article’s description, Simple YT Style Player makes most sense in these cases:
- You play multi-track or subtitled files often and find VLC’s menus slow to use.
- You want a touch-friendly player on Android for local files.
- You are comfortable with a young project whose builds and documentation you have to locate yourself.
It is less suited to you if you need a long track record, a broad set of platforms beyond Windows and Android, or independently published performance and compatibility testing. No such comparison exists in the article, so any claim that this app plays a given file better than VLC would be unsupported.
