Meta’s fuzzy Muse mascot, Jolly, makes me recoil: it looks like a soft, blank toy designed to be instantly lovable, while the product behind it is an AI agent meant to act on real tasks. “Punt it into the cursed void” is comic exaggeration, not a literal threat. The more interesting question is why an assistant with those ambitions needs a face this cuddly—and why that choice can feel so wrong.

What Jolly is—and what Muse does

Meta introduced Muse on 8 September 2026 as a personal AI agent that can work on tasks and take actions, including in the background. Meta said it was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and the web, and also described interaction through WhatsApp. The company presents Muse as a tool for pursuing users’ goals, rather than simply a chatbot that answers questions. Meta’s announcement describes the product and its rollout.

The default character is called Jolly by PC Gamer and WIRED; Axios uses “Jollybot.” That naming variation refers to the same mascot, not a separate character. Meta also says users can create, name and style their own Muse avatars, so Jolly is the default brand face—not the only appearance available. Meta’s design account describes the avatar feature.

Why Meta gave an AI assistant a face

Meta’s product design lead, Mona Sarantakos, explained that “it felt very odd talking to a corporate logo or entity.” That is the company’s design rationale: a character can make an ongoing conversation feel more personal, and Meta says avatar creation and styling became a feature users responded to positively. It explains the choice; it does not establish that every user finds the result inviting. Sarantakos’s comments appear in Meta’s design article.

There is also a practical tension. A friendly face may make a conversation feel easier, but Muse is presented as an agent that can do things on a person’s behalf. Axios reports that Muse design lead Alex Cornell created the mascot and interprets it as a way to make increasingly capable agentic AI less intimidating. That interpretation points to a higher-stakes trust question: letting an assistant shop, book travel or take other actions requires more than deciding whether its chat replies sound pleasant. Axios’s coverage discusses the mascot and that trust challenge.

Why the cute look bothers some observers

My objection is not just that Jolly is fuzzy. Its rounded, furry, pleasantly blank design feels like mass-market cuteness applied to a tool whose purpose is to act. The mismatch is hard to ignore: the mascot suggests a harmless companion, while the product pitch asks users to delegate meaningful tasks.

That reaction is not evidence that Meta intended to target children, or that users broadly dislike the mascot. WIRED reports that Muse is restricted to adults, while examining why its appearance can read as child-oriented. Fairplay executive director Josh Golin told WIRED, “It’s so clearly a character that would appeal to very young children.” Harvard marketing professor Julian De Freitas offered a different kind of explanation: cute cues can make a product seem warm and less threatening. Those are attributed judgments about the visual language, not proof of intent or measured effects. WIRED’s report covers the debate.

Other commentators frame the same design more positively. PC Gamer quotes System1 chief growth officer Andrew Tindall describing the use of attraction to cute, infant-like features as a way of making new technology easier to accept. VaynerX CMO Avery Akkineni says, “In some ways, it does humanize the product a little bit.” Both interpretations can be true as readings of the design: a mascot may make unfamiliar technology feel approachable, while also making its capabilities seem less consequential than they are. PC Gamer’s opinion piece includes those comments.

What the online reaction does—and doesn’t—show

Tom’s Guide reported that its Instagram announcement of the Muse Charm attracted more than 400 comments. In its review, the outlet identified “Surveillance Tamagotchi” as the top reply, with 537 likes; it also recorded positive comments. Those counts describe one publication’s post and its review, not a representative poll or a measure of general opinion. They do show how neatly the mascot’s toy-like presentation can collide with unease about an AI agent. Tom’s Guide’s report gives the context for the comments.

Jolly is a design choice, not the whole product

Disliking the default avatar is a reasonable response to a specific design choice; it does not settle whether Muse is useful, safe or trustworthy. Nor does the option to make a different avatar automatically resolve the mismatch. Personalization changes the face a user sees, but the core question remains whether a person understands and trusts the actions an AI agent can take.
