I Want to Play the Villain! is a theatre-themed logic-puzzle game, not a conventional actor-career or entertainment-agency simulator. You arrange actors into roles and adapt casts, costumes, and story elements to fit characters’ preferences and solve each chapter’s puzzles. Compared with Idol Manager, which centers on running an idol agency as a business, the key difference is puzzle-sized cast decisions versus broader organizational management.
How does I Want to Play the Villain! work?
The official Steam listing describes the game as a theatre-themed logic puzzle. Its central task is to match actors to roles to create a performance, taking each character’s ambitions, fears, wishes, and favorite roles into account. The title’s “villain” framing belongs to this theatrical setup; the listing does not describe a game about running an evil empire.
Actors, roles, and preferences
The actors are not simply pieces to place in empty slots: their individual wants and traits inform the arrangement. The challenge, as presented in the listing, is to find a cast and role combination that satisfies the puzzle’s constraints.

Costumes and modular story changes add further constraints or alter the performance. The listing says chapters introduce distinct settings, characters, mechanics, and stories, giving the puzzles a theatrical frame rather than presenting them as an ongoing agency-management campaign.

How is that different from Idol Manager?
Idol Manager is a useful neighboring example, but it is not a like-for-like actor puzzle game. Its Steam listing describes a business simulation about running an idol agency, developing performers, and building agency operations. The difference is chiefly the scale and kind of decisions involved:
| Comparison | I Want to Play the Villain! | Idol Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Main activity | Solve theatre-themed logic puzzles by assigning actors to roles. (Official Steam listing: source) | Run an idol-agency business simulation. (Official Steam listing: source) |
| What you manage | A cast, roles, costumes, character preferences, and story arrangements. (Official Steam listing: source) | Performers and wider agency operations, including business and production systems described in the listing. (Official Steam listing: source) |
| Structure | Chapters with distinct settings, characters, mechanics, and stories. (Official Steam listing: source) | A broader simulation centered on the entertainment business. (Official Steam listing: source) |
| Likely fit | Players looking for character-driven logic puzzles with a theatre theme; this is an inference from the listed features. | Players looking for agency-scale management and business systems; this is an inference from the listing. |
In short, I Want to Play the Villain! asks how to make a particular show work under character and story constraints. Idol Manager asks how to run an entertainment business. That distinction is more useful than treating both as interchangeable “actor-management games.”

As of October 4, 2026, the full game’s Steam page lists a planned Q1 2027 release and says it is not yet available. A free demo is listed with an August 17, 2026 release date. What the demo rating can—and cannot—tell you

What is not established yet?
Because the full game is unreleased, the available listings do not establish its final length, complete chapter count, replay depth, difficulty curve, or the quality of the finished product. The official feature description indicates the intended puzzle format, but it should not be treated as a hands-on assessment of the complete game. Pocket Gamer’s first impressions also describe the premise of fitting roles to keep actors happy and changing plot and roles as a puzzle layer; that coverage is an additional early perspective, not evidence of final scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game should you choose?
- Choose I Want to Play the Villain! if the appeal is solving compact, character-driven cast-and-story puzzles in a theatre setting. This fit is inferred from its official feature description, and the full game is not yet released.
- Choose Idol Manager if you want a simulation centered on operating an idol agency and its broader business systems, as described in its Steam listing.
These are different kinds of management: arranging a production to satisfy a puzzle, versus overseeing an entertainment organization. The latter distinction matters more than the shared presence of performers.
