To keep the cast happy in I Want to Play the Villain!, match each actor to a role they want while checking every restriction—who they will perform with, which costume styles they need, and how a scene is arranged. The puzzle becomes trickier as these demands overlap, but the game gives placement feedback so you can adjust your choices.
How the actor puzzles work
I Want to Play the Villain! is a theatre-themed logic puzzle: you assign fictional actors to roles while accounting for their wishes, ambitions, fears, and favorite roles. Triomatica Games describes the central challenge as one where “A single change can transform the entire performance.” The official Steam listing identifies it as a single-player game.
At first, the main clue is often a role preference—for example, an actor may want to play a princess, while another prefers a non-royal character. Later puzzles can add restrictions about which actors will work together, costume requirements, and scene or story choices. These are separate clues, but the correct arrangement may need to satisfy several at once.

A practical way to solve a new puzzle
- Read every actor’s clues before assigning roles. Note what each actor wants, fears, or refuses. Do not assume a favorite role is the only condition that matters.
- Make a short constraint list. Track role preferences, actor compatibility, costume styles or limits, and any scene or story instructions separately. This is a useful way to organize the puzzle, not an official in-game solve order.
- Place the clearest matches first. Give an actor a role that fits an explicit preference when that choice does not conflict with another stated restriction. Leave uncertain assignments open while you compare the remaining clues.
- Check the whole cast after each change. A choice that satisfies one actor can disrupt another preference or pairing. Revisit the other assignments instead of treating each role as an isolated decision.
- Use the mask feedback and rearrange. Pocket Gamer reviewer Stephen Gregson-Wood reports that a correct placement produces a green comedy mask and an incorrect one a red tragedy mask. He writes, “There’s no fail state here.” Treat the response as a clue and keep adjusting the cast until the arrangement works.
What changes as the puzzles get harder
Actors who will not perform together
A role match is not enough if the actors assigned to the production are incompatible. The Pocket Gamer review notes that some challenges include actors who refuse to perform together. Check pairings alongside individual role wishes, and reconsider both assignments if a conflict appears.

Costume requirements and limited wardrobes
Some actors require a costume style, while another format limits which costumes are available. A costume that suits one performer may therefore be unavailable or unsuitable for someone else. Re-check the entire cast when the wardrobe is constrained rather than assuming a role preference settles the choice.
Scenes and story arrangements
Later levels may ask you to change which characters appear in a story or which roles they play. Such changes can affect the rest of the arrangement, so review the actor, role, and costume clues again after altering a scene.
