On a Tokyo-to-London flight approaching 16 hours, T3 reviewer Mike Lowe found Sonos Ace Ultra comfortable for long wear, praised its sound and adaptive noise cancelling, and plugged it directly into the seatback entertainment system with the included cable. Those are promising travel impressions, not the result of a controlled headphone comparison: the available hands-on account is one reviewer’s experience.
How Ace Ultra handled a long flight
Mike Lowe reported that he had flown roughly 70 hours that month, including a Tokyo-to-London journey approaching 16 hours, while carrying Ace Ultra alongside the original Sonos Ace and other headphones. His account, published by T3 on September 24, 2026, offers a demanding travel use case, but its observations should be read as one person’s experience rather than independent test results.
Adaptive noise cancelling and glasses
The clearest in-flight ANC observation came after Lowe woke from a nap and put on his glasses. The glasses changed the headphone seal; he heard the aircraft background diminish within seconds as Adaptive ANC adjusted. He regarded noise cancelling as a major strength. The review does not provide a measured noise-reduction figure or a standardized comparison with rival headphones, so it cannot establish how much quieter Ace Ultra is in a controlled test.

Comfort and sound
Lowe said Ace Ultra remained comfortable during extended wear and reported a weight of 322 g. That weight is his reported figure; it is not displayed in the official product details summarized here. He also praised the sound, particularly its prominent bass and overall detail, as well as the EQ customization. These are subjective listening impressions. Sonos specifies a 40 mm driver, Adaptive EQ and a custom eight-band equalizer, but those specifications do not independently verify sound quality.
#1 Best Overall
- HEADPHONES | Featuring Dolby Atmos.
- SPATIAL AUDIO | Enjoy an industry-leading Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO | Stream lossless audio over Bluetooth or via USB-C.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION | World-class ANC neutralizes external sounds for maximum immersion.
- ALL-DAY COMFORT | Bespoke fit with plush memory foam, soft vegan leather, and a design that suits all head shapes, hairstyles, and accessories.
The case is a travel weak point
The case fits the folded headphones and has pockets for cables. Lowe found its zipper fiddly: it could catch fabric, and the case material marked up. That is a practical drawback to weigh against the comfort and listening experience if the headphones will be packed and unpacked frequently.
Can you use Ace Ultra with airplane seatback entertainment?
Yes. Lowe connected the included USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable directly to a British Airways seatback entertainment system, and it worked. He had also tried an AirFly Pro adapter, but it was not charged and did not work as expected in his situation. The successful wired connection is the relevant takeaway: a suitable seatback headphone socket can be used without relying on a charged wireless adapter.
Sonos includes both a USB-C-to-3.5-mm cable for wired listening and a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. A spare 3.5 mm cable is optional rather than a required purchase.

How long does the battery last with noise cancelling on?
Sonos rates Ace Ultra for up to 35 hours with ANC enabled at moderate volume. The company says actual battery life depends on usage, settings and environmental factors, so 35 hours is a maximum rating, not a guarantee for every flight or listening level. Lowe tracked the remaining charge in the app during extensive travel and found the estimate useful. His review does not report an independent measured battery test.
Sonos also says a three-minute charge from 0% can provide up to three hours of playback. That, too, is a manufacturer specification rather than an independently verified result.
What you get and what it costs
Sonos announced Ace Ultra on September 1, 2026, at a US price of $449, with general availability scheduled for September 29, 2026. The official US product page showed the same price when accessed. Price and availability may differ by market and can change.

The flight account makes a credible case for Ace Ultra as a travel headphone if comfort, adaptive noise cancelling, sound customization and a direct wired connection to seatback entertainment matter to you. Its strongest evidence is practical rather than comparative: the reviewer experienced a change in ANC response after his glasses altered the seal, wore the headphones on a very long route, and used the supplied cable with the aircraft system.
There is not enough evidence here to call it a tested winner over Sony or Bose alternatives. The available review does not provide a methodical head-to-head dataset, controlled ANC measurements, independently measured battery endurance or a standardized audio test. The case zipper complaint is also worth considering if you expect rugged, effortless packing.

Headphone Linking is optional for flying
Sonos Headphone Linking is a home-system feature, not a requirement for ordinary Bluetooth or wired use on a flight. Sonos describes it as an Early Access feature that requires a compatible Sonos speaker, Wi-Fi and setup in the Sonos app. It matters mainly to people who already have a compatible Sonos system and want to use the headphones with it at home.
Sonos lists replacement ear cushions and a replacement battery kit on its product page. Those are relevant if you are considering maintenance over time; no long-term reliability findings are established by the flight review.
