I used Kometa, a free tool for customizing Plex metadata, to give my library a more curated feel: themed collection rows, consistent artwork, and clearer ways to browse. The result looked better to me than Netflix’s interface for my own library—but that is a subjective impression, not a measured comparison. Kometa can automate the work, but it needs configuration, and a scheduled start does not guarantee an overnight finish.

What Kometa changed in my Plex library

Kometa—formerly Plex Meta Manager—lets you configure changes to Plex metadata and automate collections, playlists, and poster overlays. The project describes its goal as helping users “customize artwork, titles, summaries, and more to create a stunning library.” It also provides modular defaults and integrations with services such as TMDb and IMDb. See the Kometa project for its capabilities and setup walkthroughs.

The Netflix-like effect comes from presentation and discovery, not from turning Plex into Netflix. Rather than browsing one long catalog, you can organize your own titles into rows such as genres, studios, actors, decades, or trending titles. The exact collections depend on the builders and data sources you configure. A collection labeled for a streaming service should be understood as titles listed as available there by its underlying source; availability can change, so the label is only as current as that list.

How the collections and posters are built

Collections use rules and data sources

Kometa follows configuration you provide; it does not infer your personal taste or decide what makes a good collection on its own. You select or write collection files, choose the applicable defaults and integrations, and connect the services or URLs those configurations require. That makes the result more flexible than a fixed set of Plex rows, but it also means setup and occasional maintenance are part of the deal.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Artwork creates a consistent visual system

Collection posters can give each row a recognizable identity, while overlays can add visual information to individual titles. The effect depends on the artwork and rules you choose. Kometa can customize posters, titles, summaries, and other metadata; Plex also allows users to edit item artwork and customize collection posters.

What you need to configure

Kometa is not a one-click makeover. The project provides local and Docker walkthroughs, along with guides for NAS and orchestration environments, but you still need to install it, prepare a configuration file, and choose or create the collection and overlay files you want to run. Add credentials or service URLs for whichever integrations your configuration uses. The project repository links to its setup options.

A manageable first pass is to enable a few collections and test them on one library before adding more defaults or overlays. That makes it easier to understand which rules create which changes and to adjust the presentation before expanding the configuration.

Can Kometa run overnight?

Kometa supports scheduled library runs, but scheduling determines when a run begins—not when it finishes. The documented default library schedule is daily; the configuration example schedules a TV library with weekly(sunday). The Plex library configuration guide documents these settings. Actual duration depends on the size of the library, the builders and poster work selected, network access, and the machine running Kometa. The schedule does not promise completion within an overnight window.

Overlay runs can also be scheduled. The time at which Plex performs its own server maintenance is a separate setting from Kometa’s schedule, so adjusting Plex’s maintenance window does not ensure that Kometa will finish by morning.

Understand overlay scope and artwork backups

Overlays are configured at the library level, not for a hand-picked subset of titles. When Kometa runs, it evaluates the configured overlays across that library, removes overlays that no longer apply, generates images when needed, and uploads replacement artwork to Plex. If you do not supply an asset directory as the source of the original art, Kometa backs up clean artwork. These behaviors are described in the overlay guide.

Plex: Stream Movies & TV
  • Stream thousands of FREE movies and TV shows from filmmakers around the world with big hits from Crackle, Warner Brothers, MGM, Lionsgate and more! Enjoy everything from Oscar award-winning movies to anime, documentaries, family-friendly shows, and much, much more.
  • Watch 600+ channels of free live programming—instantly. From food to news to sports to kids to international content, there's something for the whole family.
  • Magically organize all your personal media—photos, music, movies, shows, even DVR-ed TV—and stream it to any device in a beautiful, simple interface; Plex adds rich descriptions, artwork, and other related information.
  • 30-second skip, variable speed playback, rich discovery, and full Plex-style support for cross-device playback status (including On Deck, so you can pick back up where you left off on any device).
  • Start with a small library or a limited overlay configuration so you can see the scope of changes.
  • Keep clean-art backups, or use an asset directory as your source of truth.
  • Avoid forcing overlays to be reapplied unless there is a reason. Each uploaded replacement image adds to Plex metadata, so repeated reapplication can contribute to metadata bloat.

Kometa or Plex’s built-in collection tools?

Plex already supports smart collections, automatic movie collections, and custom collection posters. Automatic movie collections rely on TMDb collection metadata, which is limited to the sequel collections available there; TMDb does not provide broader “universes” in that data. See Plex’s collections support page for the native options and their behavior.

What matters Plex’s built-in tools Kometa
Automation and rules Smart collections and automatic movie collections use Plex’s native options. Configured builders and files allow more varied collection rules and automation.
Setup and upkeep Managed through Plex’s built-in collection and metadata controls. Requires installation, a configuration file, and any credentials or service URLs used by the chosen integrations.
Collection sources Automatic movie collections depend on TMDb’s available collection metadata. Can use configured third-party sources and modular defaults; the exact sources depend on your setup.
Artwork and overlays Supports custom collection posters and editing item artwork. Can automate artwork, metadata changes, and overlays; overlays are evaluated at library level.
Restoring artwork Plex supports artwork editing; the cited collections guidance does not state an equivalent automatic clean-art backup workflow. Can back up clean artwork when no asset directory supplies the source art; an asset directory can instead act as the source of truth.
Home-screen discovery Native collections provide a way to organize and browse items. Configured collections can create additional discovery rows, depending on how Plex is set up to display them.

Plex also fetches metadata and artwork automatically in most cases and lets you customize item artwork. Its scheduled server maintenance can run within a user-selected local-time window, but that is distinct from Kometa’s own run schedule. See Plex’s library support page and its scanning and refreshing guide.

If you only need a few collections or occasional poster edits, Plex’s native controls may be enough. Kometa is a better fit if you want repeatable, configurable collection building and artwork changes across a library, and are comfortable maintaining a separate configuration.
