KnowRoaming worked well for my France road trip because setup was quick, data connected immediately and navigation remained usable even in remote countryside. The important limits are that it is data-only and that “unlimited” plans provide 5 GB of high-speed data per 24 hours before speeds are reduced. Your result can also vary with your phone, local network and exact route.
What the France road-trip test found
BetaNews author Wayne Williams tested KnowRoaming for two weeks on a family road trip through France in September 2024. He used an iPhone 14 Pro, bought a plan online, scanned the emailed QR code and finished setup in a few steps. After activating the eSIM in iPhone settings on arrival, it connected immediately.
During that trip, the connection handled navigation, reservations and family communication, including in remote countryside. When the included data ran out during the second week, a quick top-up restored access. Williams described the experience as smooth and reliable. That is useful firsthand evidence, but it is one handset and one itinerary—not a guarantee for every French road or device.

What “unlimited” means
KnowRoaming’s France guide defines unlimited plans as 5 GB of high-speed data every 24 hours. After that daily allowance, service continues at reduced speed. It is therefore continued access, not guaranteed full-speed data for unlimited streaming or downloads all day. The official guide says these plans are intended for uses such as GPS, video calls and social media throughout the day.
Validity and activation rules
- Unused fixed-plan data expires when the plan’s validity period ends.
- The purchased eSIM must be activated within 90 days, and activation occurs when it is turned on in a supported destination.
- Top-ups are available if your allowance runs out.
How to install KnowRoaming before flying
- Check compatibility: confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
- Choose coverage: buy the France plan for a France-only itinerary, or the Europe regional eSIM for a route crossing neighboring countries. KnowRoaming describes the regional option as covering 39 countries; verify the current country list before paying.
- Install with dependable internet: use the app’s Auto Install option or scan the emailed QR code while at home or somewhere with stable Wi-Fi.
- Prevent early usage: leave the KnowRoaming line turned off until you arrive if you do not want accidental activation or data use.
- Activate in France: open your phone’s cellular or mobile-network settings, select KnowRoaming as the mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for that line.
- Keep your main SIM: leave the primary line available for calls, SMS and verification codes, while ensuring its data roaming is disabled if your home carrier charges for it.
Installing before departure avoids depending on airport Wi-Fi. The eSIM can be installed before the trip, then enabled after arrival in France.

Voice and SMS
KnowRoaming’s travel eSIM is data-only. It does not provide a local phone number, traditional voice calling or SMS. Keep your primary SIM active for calls, texts and one-time verification messages, or use internet calling and messaging apps over the eSIM data connection.

Will it work in the French countryside?
Williams reported usable service in remote countryside during his two-week route, which is encouraging for road travelers. Coverage still depends on the partner network serving a particular valley, highway or rural area, as well as your handset and surroundings. Download offline maps before leaving towns, and test navigation and access to the KnowRoaming account before starting a long rural leg.

Practical safeguards for a driving holiday
- Download offline maps for every region on the route.
- Save hotel addresses, booking references and emergency information offline.
- Check that the eSIM is selected for mobile data and that its data roaming switch is on.
- Disable automatic app updates, cloud photo backup and video autoplay if you are on a small fixed allowance.
- Carry a charging cable or power bank; navigation and hotspot use consume battery quickly.
- Top up before the allowance reaches zero if you will be driving beyond reliable Wi-Fi.
Verdict
KnowRoaming is a convenient France road-trip eSIM when you want quick installation, navigation data and the option to top up without handling a physical SIM. The strongest evidence is Williams’s smooth 2024 experience, including rural use. Choose a fixed plan for measurable, moderate consumption; choose unlimited only if its 5 GB high-speed daily allowance matches your habits. For calls, SMS and verification codes, retain your primary SIM. For a France-to-neighboring-countries route, select the regional product and check its current country list before departure.
