For one image edit, ChatGPT Images came closer to the result I wanted than I expected from a conversational prompt. That is a report about one task, not evidence that it generally beats Photoshop: the exact image, request, and output are not specified here, so there is no honest way to claim which details it changed or how many revisions it took.
The practical takeaway is that ChatGPT Images is worth trying when you can describe an edit plainly and want a quick starting point. Photoshop remains the more explicit selection-based workflow when you need to define an area and work through its dedicated image-editing tools.
What GPT Image means in this comparison
The current image-editing experience in ChatGPT is labeled ChatGPT Images. OpenAI’s help page says you can upload an existing image and describe a change, or select part of the image and specify what to alter. You can ask it to add, remove, or update image content. The name “GPT Image” in this article’s title should not be taken to identify a specific underlying model version; that depends on what was used for the particular edit.

That conversational approach is what made the result notable: instead of beginning with a precisely bounded selection and a dedicated fill command, you can explain the desired change in ordinary language. OpenAI’s instructions and availability details are on its Images in ChatGPT help page.

How to edit an existing image in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and upload the image you want to change.
- Describe the edit in the conversation. If the change should affect a specific area, use the image selection tool and then describe what to add, remove, or update.
- Review the result for changes outside the intended area, then refine your instruction or selection if needed.
OpenAI warns that selection highlights may not be precise and that edits can extend beyond the highlighted region. A selection is therefore a guide, not a guarantee that every pixel outside it will remain untouched.
OpenAI’s current help page says ChatGPT Images is available across ChatGPT tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. Product availability can change, so check the help page for the latest details.

How Photoshop handles a similar edit
In Photoshop desktop, Adobe’s documented Generative Fill workflow starts with opening an image and making a selection with a selection tool. You then choose Generative Fill and enter a text prompt; leaving the prompt blank lets Photoshop generate a fill based on surrounding pixels. Adobe describes this process as non-destructive. When ChatGPT Images is a good first try
- You can describe the change more easily than you can specify the editing steps. A direct prompt is a low-friction way to ask for an addition, removal, or update.
- You want to explore a result before refining it. A conversational workflow lets you respond to what the first output did, rather than building the whole edit around a selection first.
- You can tolerate checking the surrounding image. Selection boundaries are not exact, and edits may spill outside the targeted area, so inspect the subject and composition rather than judging only the edited spot.
In the particular edit behind this comparison, the output was closer to the intended result than expected. Without the starting image, exact prompt, and a description of what counted as “closer,” that experience cannot support a broader quality ranking or a reproducible claim.
When Photoshop remains the better fit
- You want to define the area before generating. Generative Fill is explicitly built around a selection and prompt, with the option to use surrounding pixels when the prompt is blank.
- You need a workflow for more than filling an area. Adobe documents Generative Expand and other generative features alongside Generative Fill.
- You want to judge the result through a dedicated editing workflow. Photoshop’s selection-based process and non-destructive Generative Fill offer a different kind of control from issuing a conversational request. That does not prove Photoshop will produce a better result for every edit.
What this comparison does—and does not—show
OpenAI’s December 16, 2025 announcement for GPT Image 1.5 says the experience can be “up to 4× faster.” That is OpenAI’s vendor-published generation-speed claim relative to its previous experience or model, not a measured comparison with Photoshop and not a promise about every edit. The useful conclusion is narrower: ChatGPT Images can edit an uploaded picture from a natural-language instruction, while Photoshop Generative Fill uses an explicit selection-and-prompt workflow. One unexpectedly good result is a reason to try the conversational option on a suitable edit—not proof that it replaces Photoshop or wins across image-editing tasks.
