Turning off 2G can be a reasonable security choice on an Android phone that offers the setting, but Android’s official documentation does not show that it extends battery life. The headline describes a personal experience. That experience may be real for that phone, yet it is not evidence that 2G caused the difference. This guide explains what the 2G control does, how to find it on current Android versions, what you give up by turning it off, and how to find the drain that is actually costing you charge.
What the 2G setting is for
Android’s 2G control is a cellular security feature, not a power-saving switch. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes it this way: “This stops a device from scanning or connecting to 2G networks.” The purpose is to reduce exposure to downgrade attacks, in which a false base station tries to pull a phone off a modern network and onto 2G.
Three points define how the feature behaves:
- It is device-dependent. The control appears only on phones whose hardware and software support it. Google’s Security Blog post of 8 August 2023 explains that Android 12 introduced the modem-level user feature and that Android 14 added enterprise management support.
- It does not block emergency services. According to AOSP, emergency-service scanning and connection are still allowed, and emergency calls are not affected by the security disable behavior.
- It is a radio-level control. It changes which networks the modem will look for and join. It does not switch off the phone’s other connections.
Does turning off 2G save battery?
Google’s Android battery guidance states that “your device’s battery life depends on the type of device you have.” It does not list disabling 2G as a battery measure, and the official AOSP security documentation for the setting does not describe battery extension as a benefit. No controlled before-and-after measurement of 2G on battery life appears in these sources, so no percentage or duration can be attributed to the setting.
That does not make the reported improvement impossible. It means the change cannot be credited to 2G on the strength of the documentation alone. Anything else that differed between the two periods of use can account for a difference, including:

- Signal strength and how often the phone moved between cells.
- Screen time, navigation, streaming, tethering, or calls.
- Software updates, app installs, or background app changes.
- Temperature, charging habits, and the age of the battery.
How to turn off 2G on Android 16
Android 16 changes both the label and the on/off logic, so read the state carefully. AOSP documents these changes:
- The SIM Settings control is relabeled “2G network protection.”
- A per-SIM entry point is added under Settings > Safety Center > Mobile network security.
- The display convention is inverted: OFF means 2G is enabled, and ON means 2G is disabled.
- The underlying connectivity default did not change.
To block 2G on Android 16:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety Center, then Mobile network security. If you prefer, search Settings for “2G” or “Allow 2G” instead.
- Choose the SIM you want to change. Dual-SIM phones may show one entry per SIM.
- Find the 2G network protection control and check its state. ON means 2G is disabled.
- Turn the control ON to block 2G. Turn it OFF if you need 2G again, and you will be able to connect to 2G networks once more.
Menu paths differ by manufacturer, Android build, SIM configuration, and modem support. If you cannot find the control after searching for “2G,” your phone may not support it, or the maker may have placed it elsewhere. Check your device’s own help material before assuming the feature is missing.

Trade-offs before you change it
- Roaming. In places where local coverage depends on 2G, a phone with 2G blocked may have no service. Turn the control off again before you travel to such a location, or check with your carrier about coverage in the places you visit.
- LTE, 5G, and VoLTE. Blocking 2G does not change which newer networks your phone uses. Whether your calls and data stay on modern networks depends on your device and carrier, so confirm that VoLTE and LTE or 5G coverage works where you normally are.
- Emergency calls. Emergency service connections remain allowed under AOSP’s description.
- Cost. The trade-off is convenience and roaming reach against exposure to 2G-based downgrade attacks. Blocking 2G is not a documented way to trade battery life against performance.
Finding the real cause of battery drain
If your battery is draining quickly, start with usage data rather than a guess about the radio. Google’s guidance points to these common causes:

- High-use apps, especially those running in the background.
- Tethering or a hotspot in use.
- GPS and location-based apps.
- Streaming video or music.
- Calls made while moving.
- Heat, which can cause the phone to use more power.
Open Settings > Battery and review the Battery usage breakdown for the last 24 hours and the last several days. On Pixel phones, Google’s “Fix battery drain problem” help page also directs you to Battery diagnostics and Battery usage. Those screens show which app or activity used the most power, which is far more useful than a single radio setting.

If you want to test the change yourself
A single personal experience is worth recording before you draw conclusions. Keep a short note for each period, whether you changed the 2G setting or not, with these details:
- Phone model, Android version, and carrier.
- Typical location and signal conditions.
- How long you observed the phone, and roughly how much you used it.
- Battery health, if your phone reports it.
- Any other settings or apps you changed during the same period.
Treat a result from one phone as that phone’s experience. It does not establish a general effect until others with the same model, software, and usage see a similar difference.
