Opening a graphics card can turn a suspected defect into a warranty dispute. If your GPU is still covered, check its exact warranty and contact the seller, board partner, or manufacturer before removing the cooler or other parts. The account in this headline does not identify the card, symptom, or teardown finding, so it cannot establish what failed or whether the defect is common.

The headline gives the card’s age and price as the author’s details, but does not name the GPU model or describe its symptoms, diagnosis, or repair. Should you open a GPU that is overheating?
Usually, check warranty coverage and seek support before disassembly—especially if the card is still covered. An overheating symptom alone does not identify the cause, and removing the heatsink is not a reliable diagnostic shortcut. NVIDIA describes fan and heatsink replacement as not easy and recommends manufacturer repair or replacement for cards that remain under warranty. See its fan-replacement guidance.

Before deciding, separate the symptom from the suspected cause. A temperature problem might prompt a check of airflow, fan operation, or software-reported temperatures, but those checks do not prove a particular component has failed. If the proposed fix requires removing the cooler, replacing thermal materials, or handling the PCB, first determine whether the warranty route is available and whether the repair instructions match your exact model.
Who handles an NVIDIA graphics-card warranty claim?
It depends on who made the card. NVIDIA says graphics cards made by its board partners are warranted by the partner, while Founders Edition cards are covered directly by NVIDIA. Confirm the card’s manufacturer and product-specific terms in NVIDIA’s warranty FAQ before opening a claim.

NVIDIA’s US warranty page describes a three-year period for the NVIDIA-branded graphics cards listed there and directs owners who believe a covered product is defective to customer support. The page was last updated July 19, 2016, so check the current terms for your specific product and region rather than assuming that period applies to every GPU. The page says: “If you are experiencing a problem, or if you believe that your product is defective, please contact the NVIDIA Customer Care team.” Read the NVIDIA GeForce graphics-card warranty for its scope and contact route.
Can taking the card apart affect its warranty?
Warranty terms and damage assessments vary by product and region. Do not assume either that opening every graphics card automatically voids its warranty or that a self-repair will leave coverage unaffected. Physical damage caused during disassembly can matter even when the original problem was a suspected manufacturing defect.

For example, MSI’s US guidance lists a cracked PCB, impact damage to PCB components, a broken fan blade, and a deformed backplate among examples of customer-induced damage. - Warranty service: Best to investigate first if the card may still be covered. Use the correct route for the card maker, and ask whether the proposed repair is authorized.
- Manufacturer-paid repair or replacement: A practical option when warranty coverage is unclear or has ended, particularly if the failure may involve a fan, heatsink, or other assembly.
- Self-repair: Consider only when you have confirmed the model-specific procedure, understand the risk of causing additional damage, and have weighed the time without the card against the service alternatives. A general teardown guide is not a substitute for instructions for your exact GPU.
The title does not identify a compatible fan, thermal pad, paste, screwdriver bit, or other replacement part. Those choices require the exact card model and, where relevant, its board revision. Avoid ordering components or following a model-specific teardown based only on a symptom or a generic guide.
