Gmail’s search operators can surface old messages, attachment-heavy conversations, and large emails that are easy to miss when browsing your inbox. Try these three searches as a review queue—not as an automatic delete list—and inspect matches before removing anything.
1. Find mail older than a chosen age
Enter older_than:3y in Gmail’s search bar to find messages older than three years. Change the number or unit to fit your review window: Gmail supports d for days, m for months, and y for years. The related newer_than: operator searches in the other direction. See Google’s Gmail search operators.
Age alone does not tell you whether a message is safe to delete. Review results for receipts, records, travel details, or conversations you may need to keep.
2. Find older messages with attachments
Search for older_than:2y has:attachment to focus on messages older than two years that include an attachment. Adjust the age to suit your goal. Before deleting a conversation, open it and confirm that any valuable attachment is saved somewhere you can access.
#1 Best Overall
Gmail lets you combine search operators, so this query narrows the results by both age and attachment status. Google documents older_than: and has:attachment in its operator reference.
3. Find large messages
Use larger:10M to search for messages larger than 10 megabytes. Google gives this as an example of the larger: operator. A large message may be worth reviewing, but deleting one does not guarantee a particular amount of storage will be freed.
You can combine size with age or sender criteria to make the results more focused. For example, larger:10M older_than:2y targets large messages older than two years. To narrow by sender, add a condition such as from:example@example.com. Use the exact sender address you want to search for.
Refine a search with dates or a sender
For a specific date window, combine after: and before: with dates in YYYY/MM/DD form, such as after:2022/01/01 before:2023/01/01. Add from: to focus on mail from a particular sender. Gmail supports combining operators, so you can narrow broad results rather than relying on one search to identify every message worth removing. The available operators are listed in Google’s search reference.

Review results before deleting
On Gmail for computer, search first and inspect the matching conversations. When selecting messages, Gmail provides an interface prompt to select all conversations matching the category before you delete them. Use that option only after checking that the search and selection cover what you intend to remove.
Google explains, “When you delete a message in Gmail, it’s moved to Trash.” Permanent deletion is a separate action from Trash. Read Gmail’s computer deletion instructions before emptying it.
