I used to think of Figma as a place to make polished app screens. Its tools cover more than interface design: teams can plan and diagram in FigJam, build presentations in Slides, illustrate with Draw, prototype with Make, and design and publish websites with Sites. “Everything else” isn’t literally everything; it’s a set of distinct creative and collaborative jobs, each served by a different part of Figma.

Figma is a collection of tools, not just an interface editor

Figma’s product overview separates its tools by the work they’re meant to support. Figma Design focuses on digital product and experience design; FigJam is an online whiteboard; Slides is for presentations; Draw is for illustration; Make is for prototypes and web apps; and Sites is for website design and publishing. The overview labels Sites as beta, and availability or features may change.

Tool Best fit
FigJam Collaborative brainstorming, planning, and diagrams
Figma Design Detailed digital product and experience design
Slides Presenting ideas and gathering input
Draw Illustration
Make Functional prototypes and web apps
Sites Website design and publishing; labeled beta in Figma’s overview

Those categories don’t mean every task needs a separate file or that these tools replace specialist software. They do offer a useful starting point: choose the tool based on what you want to do, not on the assumption that Figma is only for designing screens.

Use FigJam to think together before designing

FigJam is the natural place to start when the work is still messy: a meeting, brainstorm, research discussion, plan, or group exercise. Figma’s current overview lists meetings, brainstorms, diagrams, planning, and research among its uses. The company introduced FigJam in 2021 as an online whiteboard for teams to brainstorm and ideate together.

Map a process or share a plan

Shapes and connectors make FigJam useful for laying out a process, a user flow, or a diagram before anyone turns it into a polished design. Figma’s launch material described diagrams and user flows as use cases. That is an example of intended use, not a guarantee that FigJam is the right diagramming tool for every technical or highly specialized workflow.

Support team rituals and documentation

Figma-authored examples also describe FigJam for retrospectives, onboarding documentation, engineering critiques, technical specifications, and product requirements documents. These are examples rather than a promise that a whiteboard alone can replace a team’s documentation or project-management system.

Use Slides when the idea needs a story

Figma Slides is intended for presentations such as product reviews, sales decks, and pitch decks. It can be a useful next step when a team has worked through an idea and needs to explain it, invite feedback, or present a recommendation.

In its June 26, 2024 announcement, Figma reported that its users had created about 3.5 million presentations in the preceding year, citing Figma research. That is a historical, company-reported figure—not an independent market statistic or a current annual rate.

Use Draw for illustration and Make for interactive concepts

Draw: create illustrations

Figma describes Draw as an illustration tool with brushes, transforms, textures, and vector-editing capabilities. It is a better fit than a whiteboard when the task is to make or refine artwork rather than map ideas with a group.

Make: build a functional prototype

Figma describes Make as a tool for functional prototypes and web apps. A prototype can help a team discuss how an idea might work, rather than relying only on static screens or a verbal explanation.

In a January 2026 announcement, Figma said Make prototypes could be embedded in FigJam, Figma Design, and Slides. That creates a way to discuss or present a shared interactive reference where the related work is happening. Check current product availability and feature details before depending on a particular workflow.

Use Figma for classroom activities, too

Figma’s education materials describe FigJam for classroom discussion and group work, and Figma tools for making graphics, presentations, and prototypes. The company’s September 2026 education article gives examples of students building apps, prototypes, and interactive experiences, with design, testing, and iteration as part of the activity. These are company-published examples; they do not establish independent evidence of learning outcomes.

Figma’s education page describes free access for verified teachers and students. Eligibility and terms can change, so check the current requirements on that page rather than assuming all educators or students qualify.

Pick a first task that matches the tool

If you’re curious about Figma beyond interface design, start with one low-stakes task and choose the product that fits it:

  • Plan a meeting or map a process: open FigJam and start with a whiteboard or diagram.
  • Explain a proposal: try Slides for a product review, pitch, or sales presentation.
  • Make artwork: explore Draw’s illustration tools.
  • Demonstrate an interaction: try Make for a prototype, then check whether embedding it in FigJam, Design, or Slides fits your workflow.
  • Design and publish a website: look at Sites, while accounting for its beta label in Figma’s product overview.

This is a practical way to discover where Figma fits your work without treating the platform as a universal replacement for every tool.
