The TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus is an Android tablet built around a matte, paper-like screen and a dedicated key for switching display modes. After two months of daily use, the Tom’s Guide reviewer found it excellent for reading, easy to carry, and usable outdoors. Even so, the reviewer concluded it did not beat their iPad. That verdict reflects one reviewer’s workload and preferences. It is not a controlled test against a named iPad model, so it should not be read as proof that the TCL is slower or worse for everyone.
What kind of device this is
The NXTPAPER 11 Plus is an Android tablet with an LCD panel. It is not an e-paper reader. TCL’s US product page lists an IPS LCD screen and Android 15 (TCL North America product page). The matte finish and the Ink Paper mode can look and feel close to paper, but the underlying panel is still a backlit LCD. That matters for battery behavior, refresh, and how the screen responds to touch and stylus input, which are different from an e-ink device.
Specifications, and which version you are looking at
TCL publishes two product pages with different details. The US listing describes the 11.45-inch model sold in North America. The global page describes an 11.5-inch model with 33W charging. Treat them as regional descriptions and do not combine them into one spec sheet.

The three display modes
The main difference from a standard Android tablet is the NXTPAPER key, which cycles the screen through display modes. The Tom’s Guide reviewer describes three of them.
Regular
This is the standard full-color view. Use it for video, photos, and apps that depend on color accuracy.

Color Paper
The review lists this as the second of three modes but does not describe its processing in detail. Check the mode on the device before relying on it for a specific task.
Ink Paper
This is the monochrome reading view. The reviewer valued that they could switch from full color to this view while still using Android apps, so reading does not require a separate e-reader app.

What the two-month test found
The reviewer’s strongest praise was for the matte surface, which they named as the most valuable daily feature. They reported reduced glare and said the tablet stayed usable in direct sunlight during outings. The 11.5-inch size was described as useful for reading and portability. The review also found the included folio’s stand and the stylus storage useful. These are qualitative impressions. The review does not report brightness measurements or a controlled glare test.
The reviewer’s verdict is in the title: the tablet “doesn’t beat the iPad” for them. The cited review does not name a specific iPad or run a matched benchmark, so the reasons are personal. They depend on which iPad the reviewer uses and what work they do on it.

How to compare it with your own iPad
Because the verdict is personal, the useful comparison is against your own priorities. Use these checks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Screen surface. Test the matte finish in the room and light where you read most. Glare that bothers you on a glossy iPad may not bother you here, and vice versa.
- Reading and writing. If you rely on a stylus, compare the included or optional stylus with your current pen, including latency and palm rejection in your own apps.
- Apps and ecosystem. Confirm that every app you depend on runs on Android and works with the mode you use. If you rely on iPad-only apps or Apple accessories, the TCL may not replace the iPad.
- Workload. Run a real task on the TCL, such as a long document, a multitasking session, or a heavy app. No matched benchmark for these devices was captured in the cited review material, so test your own work.
- Total cost. Add the accessories you will actually use, then compare the complete setup with the iPad you would otherwise buy.
Eye comfort claims
TCL describes NXTPAPER 4.0 as including Smart Eye Comfort and Personalized Eye Comfort modes (TCL North America announcement, January 6, 2025). These are manufacturer product claims. The cited material does not include an independent study or a published figure on eye strain. Read the modes as product features, not clinical results.

TCL North America General Manager Eric Anderson framed the product this way in the August 12, 2025 announcement: “At the heart of the TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus is the focus on a more comfortable user experience.” This is TCL’s positioning, not an independent finding.
Price, bundle, and buying checks
Prices and accessories change, so check these before you buy:
- Confirm the price on the live page. TCL’s direct store showed $219.99 on October 7, 2026 (TCL North America product page). Third-party prices, including the Amazon deal the Tom’s Guide review cites at $269 from a former $369 in January 2026, are historical and may no longer apply.
- Confirm the version. Match the listing to the US specifications above. Regional pages may show different screen sizes, charging speeds, or memory.
- Confirm the bundle. The reviewer’s unit included a folio and an active stylus. Retail packages can differ, so check the listing for what is included.
- Check any keyboard case separately. TCL’s Taiwan quick-start guide for the NXTPAPER 11 Plus documents a Bluetooth 5.3 keyboard case. That guide does not establish that the case is sold or compatible in the US, so verify the accessory on the US listing before buying.
Who the NXTPAPER 11 Plus suits
Based on the reviewer’s experience and the listed specifications, the tablet makes the most sense for readers who spend long periods on a screen, read outdoors, or want a lighter Android tablet with a matte surface. If your work depends on iPad apps, Apple accessories, or heavier workloads, test those specific needs before deciding. The review supports a reading-first verdict. It does not show that the TCL matches every iPad in every situation.

The title’s verdict is the reviewer’s, and it holds for that reviewer’s use. For your own reading and work, the matte screen and display modes are the deciding factors to test.
Keep in mind that the review describes a unit tested over two months. Long-term battery life, durability, and software updates are not covered in the cited material, so check the manufacturer’s update commitments for the region you buy in.
