TomTom is worth trying alongside Google Maps if rush-hour traffic is your main concern. In a week-long test reported by Tom’s Guide, one New Jersey Turnpike route suggestion favored a lane shared by cars and trucks over the cars-only lane, which the reviewer said could move more slowly. That is a useful example—not proof that TomTom is generally better at traffic routing.
Which Android Auto navigation app handles heavy traffic best?
There is no established overall winner. The strongest specific case for TomTom comes from a single reported rush-hour drive: the reviewer found its New Jersey Turnpike lane recommendation saved time on that trip. Across the week-long test, however, TomTom usually proposed routes similar to Google Maps, and the review also noted questionable advice. Local roads, timing and available traffic data can change the result.
Tom’s Guide’s account of its week-long test says the reviewer used TomTom for commuting and a weekend trip, with Android Auto or CarPlay, while keeping Google Maps open on another device. It describes a second instance in which TomTom suggested a turn using a jug-handle road that saved time. These are individual observations, not controlled measurements of accuracy or average time saved.

Why TomTom’s traffic example is worth testing locally
The New Jersey Turnpike example is about choosing between lanes with different traffic conditions, not simply finding an alternate road. A recommendation that accounts for a slower cars-only lane could be helpful on that particular commute. But the test provides no repeatable comparison across multiple days, routes or regions, so it cannot show how often TomTom makes the better call.

TomTom’s current Google Play listing is titled “TomTom – GPS Navigation App for Every Driver,” identifies the app as formerly AmiGO and was updated September 21, 2026. It advertises traffic alerts, rerouting and Android Auto compatibility. A store listing can establish what the app claims to offer, but not how accurately it performs in your area.
How to compare the apps on your own commute
- Choose a familiar route that regularly gets congested, and compare the apps at similar departure times on separate trips.
- Before driving, check the route each app proposes and note its ETA, major roads and any lane or incident guidance. Do not handle or type into a phone while driving.
- When traffic changes, compare whether the apps reroute, how much the ETA changes and whether the suggested detour makes sense once you reach it.
- Assess the in-car interface separately: voice controls, lane guidance, incident reporting, destination entry and whether you can make a needed route change safely.
- Repeat the comparison on more than one day. A single trip can reveal a useful option, but it cannot establish which app is consistently better.
For basic voice-guided navigation, live traffic and lane guidance, Google Maps is a strong baseline. Waze is a natural alternative when driver-submitted incident reports matter most. HERE WeGo offers traffic sharing, with the route-editing limits described above. TomTom is the one to add to a local test if you want to see whether its route choices work better on your congested roads.
