Switching Ubuntu from its default desktop to Cinnamon can change how you launch apps, arrange windows, and navigate your files—but the official information available does not establish that Cinnamon is faster than Ubuntu’s default GNOME-based desktop. Ubuntu describes Cinnamon as a traditional, customizable desktop; whether that feels quicker depends on your workflow and hardware.

What changes when you switch Ubuntu to Cinnamon?

Ubuntu Cinnamon is an Ubuntu flavor that combines Ubuntu with the Cinnamon desktop. Ubuntu describes it as offering a traditional desktop experience with customization options. Its official flavors page calls it “a traditionally modern experience.” Ubuntu’s flavors page

Ubuntu’s standard desktop uses a modified GNOME environment. Ubuntu’s help documentation describes Ubuntu-specific elements including the Ubuntu Dock, Desktop Icons NG, Yaru defaults, and minimize/maximize controls in window title bars. Ubuntu Help: About GNOME on Ubuntu

Cinnamon’s Ubuntu manpage describes a layout similar to GNOME 2 and a traditional, comfortable desktop experience. That is a description of its design, not a measurement of speed. The cited manpage applies to the Jammy package context, so it should not be treated as a specification for every Cinnamon release. Ubuntu Manpages: cinnamon

Is Cinnamon faster than Ubuntu’s default desktop?

The official sources cited here do not provide a controlled benchmark comparing Cinnamon with Ubuntu’s default desktop, nor do they establish a measured productivity advantage. It would be inaccurate to promise that switching makes Ubuntu faster or that it improves everyone’s productivity.

“For speed” can still describe a reasonable personal motivation: a desktop that fits your habits may make routine actions feel more direct. Keep that experience separate from system performance. If you have not measured startup time, application launch time, or resource use under comparable conditions, describe the change as a workflow preference rather than a performance result. Ubuntu’s package listing provides package-level context, not comparative speed data. Ubuntu Packages: Noble ubuntucinnamon-desktop

Where the workflow upgrade can come from

The practical difference is the interaction model. Ubuntu’s documented GNOME-based setup provides its dock and desktop icons; Cinnamon emphasizes a traditional layout and customization. One may suit you better depending on what you do repeatedly, but that preference is not proof that one desktop is universally quicker.

  • Launching apps: Notice whether your regular apps are easier to reach using the layout you prefer.
  • Arranging windows: Pay attention to how naturally you move between, resize, and organize the windows you use most.
  • Organizing files: Consider whether your desktop and file-navigation habits feel more comfortable in the environment you choose.
  • Navigating: Compare the desktop’s menus, dock, icons, and customization options against the way you already work.
  • Responsiveness: Judge this on your own hardware. The cited official sources do not supply a Cinnamon-versus-GNOME benchmark.

A useful test is to identify a few routine tasks before switching, then see whether the new layout makes those tasks more comfortable. If you want to make a performance claim, measure the same task on the same machine under comparable conditions; otherwise, frame the result as your own experience.

Should you install Ubuntu Cinnamon or add Cinnamon to Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Cinnamon is a distinct Ubuntu flavor. Installing Cinnamon into an existing Ubuntu setup is another possible route, but community instructions are not equivalent to official vendor guidance. For a reliable choice, start with the flavor’s official page and consult current official distribution documentation for the exact release and installation method. Ubuntu Cinnamon

Before proceeding, check the instructions for your intended Ubuntu release. Desktop installation details and support dates can change, and a guide written for one release may not apply to another.

What to prepare before installing

Ubuntu’s desktop installation tutorial recommends a flash drive of 12 GB or above for installation media and advises backing up existing data before installing. It also recommends choosing Ubuntu-certified hardware where possible. These are preparation recommendations, not evidence about Cinnamon’s performance. Ubuntu: Install Ubuntu Desktop
