I moved my 8GB home server from TrueNAS to Debian with Cockpit and, in my own before-and-after measurement, saw 2.5GB more RAM available. That is a result from my server and workload—not a guaranteed saving for other systems. The meaningful comparison is what each system leaves available while doing the same jobs, not simply how much memory its dashboard reports as used.

What the 2.5GB figure means—and what it doesn’t

The 2.5GB figure is my reported result; the cited documentation does not independently verify it. To make it useful, I would compare both systems under the same workload and at the same point in that workload, recording the measurement method and whether it counts filesystem cache. “Used,” “free,” and “available” memory are not interchangeable: Linux can use otherwise idle RAM for cache, which may be reclaimed when applications need it.

So the practical claim is limited: on my server, after this migration, my chosen measurement showed 2.5GB more headroom. It does not establish that Debian or Cockpit saves that amount on every 8GB machine, or that the difference represents memory previously wasted by TrueNAS.

Why an 8GB TrueNAS system can still be a reasonable starting point

TrueNAS’s current hardware guide says, “You should have at least 8 GB of RAM for basic TrueNAS operations with up to eight drives.” The guide’s 8GB figure is a minimum suggestion for that basic use case, not a promise that every workload will run comfortably at that capacity. It also explains that RAM is shared among services, apps, virtual machines, and read caching. Needs rise with workload and configuration. TrueNAS Hardware Guide

The older TrueNAS 25.04 hardware guide lists 8GB and two identically sized devices for a single storage pool in its minimum hardware table. That is edition-specific guidance, not a statement that any 8GB configuration will suit every pool or workload. TrueNAS 25.04 Hardware Guide

What Debian and Cockpit changed in my setup

Debian is the operating system; Cockpit is a web-based administration interface for Linux servers. Cockpit exposes management for areas such as storage, networking, logs, services, accounts, performance, virtual machines, and containers. It uses existing system APIs and normal user logins. The project also says Cockpit uses systemd socket activation and does not run in the background when unused. Cockpit Project

BOSGAME E5 11 Pro Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5300U 4C/ 8T, Business Home Office PC
  • 【AMD Ryzen 3 5300U CPU: Outperforms N150 & 3500U】 BOSGAME E5 mini PC is powered by the TSMC 7nm FinFET architecture AMD Ryzen 3 5300U processor (4 Cores, 8 Threads, up to 3.8GHz boost, 6MB total cache). Compared to low-end Intel N150 or 3500U chips which only have 4 single threads and throttle under load, the 5300U delivers over 30% faster multi-core speed. Run 30+ browser tabs, large Excel sheets, and Zoom meetings simultaneously without system lag.
  • 【8GB DDR4 RAM & 256GB NVMe SSD Storage】 Installed with high-speed 8GB DDR4 dual-channel memory and a fast 256GB M.2 2280 SSD, eliminating slow boot times and application loading delays. To accommodate growing data requirements, the upgradeable hardware design features dual SODIMM slots that allow you to expand memory up to 64GB RAM, ensuring smooth operation during heavy multitasking.
  • 【High-Capacity Dual M.2 SSD Storage Expansion】 Never worry about running out of space for your business files. In addition to the pre-installed 256GB system drive, the motherboard houses an extra empty internal M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot. This allows you to easily add a second solid-state drive for up to an additional 2TB of storage capacity (upgrades not included) without needing to remove or reinstall the original operating system.
  • 【Radeon 6-Core Graphics & Triple 4K Displays】 Integrated with official AMD Radeon Graphics (6 Graphics Cores, 1500 MHz frequency) for casual gaming, photo editing, and crisp 4K media decoding. Featuring 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort, and 1x Full-Function Type-C port, the E5 outputs true 4K@60Hz resolution to three monitors at once. This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

That makes Cockpit a way to manage parts of a Linux server, not a drop-in replacement for every TrueNAS feature or workflow. The result depends on the actual services and storage tools installed and configured on Debian. Cockpit alone does not decide how disks are pooled, how shares are exported, or how snapshots and backups work.

Storage is a separate migration decision

Changing the operating system and management interface does not tell you whether the storage design changed. Before treating another server as comparable, identify whether it retained ZFS, moved to another filesystem, or adopted a different pool and share setup. Then document how data is shared, snapshotted, backed up, and recovered.

Its ultra-compact footprint easily replaces bulky traditional computer towers, pre-installed with a clean system.

If you keep ZFS, account for its memory behavior rather than treating all RAM used by it as unavailable overhead. The Debian ZFS wiki describes pooled storage, checksums, snapshots, and software RAID, and explains that ZFS uses RAM for its Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC). Debian Wiki: ZFS

A useful before-and-after record includes the same services and clients, the same storage activity, the same observation point, and the same memory fields on both systems. Note whether the reported number is free memory, available memory, process or service use, or cache. Without that context, a single number cannot tell you whether the system has more usable headroom or is simply caching differently.

Choose based on workload, maintenance, and recovery

There is no universal winner established by these figures. TrueNAS publishes storage and memory guidance; Cockpit lists administration functions for a Linux system. The better fit depends on what the server actually does and how much hands-on configuration you want to own.

  • Memory headroom: Compare both systems with the same workload and a clearly defined memory metric.
  • Storage workflow: Decide which filesystem and pool tools you will use, and how shares, snapshots, and backups will operate.
  • Administration: Cockpit can manage listed parts of a Linux host through a browser, while shell access and automation remain options. Confirm each required task is covered by the tools you configure.
  • Recovery: Write down how to restore the operating system, reconnect or import storage, restore configuration, and recover data from backups.
  • Maintenance time: Account for the time needed to configure and maintain the Debian services and storage stack you choose. A smaller memory footprint is only one part of the trade-off.
