After a week using Claude instead of ChatGPT, Tom’s Guide writer Amanda Caswell said five things made her want to stick with Claude: Artifacts, file creation, writing style, instruction following, and its willingness to show uncertainty. Those are her personal impressions, not the result of a controlled comparison. Whether they matter to you depends on what you ask an AI assistant to do—and which features are available on your plan and product surface.
What convinced Amanda Caswell to stay with Claude
Caswell’s February 10, 2026, account describes a week-long switch from ChatGPT to Claude. The five points below are her reasons, rather than a universal ranking of the two assistants. Product documentation helps explain the workflows behind some of them; writing quality, instruction following, and candor about uncertainty remain subjective judgments in this account. Read the Tom’s Guide account.
1. Artifacts turn some answers into interactive outputs
Claude Artifacts put substantial, self-contained work in a dedicated window rather than leaving it only in the chat stream. Anthropic lists examples including documents, code, single-page websites, SVG images, diagrams, and interactive React components. Users can request revisions, inspect versions, copy the underlying content, and download files. That can be useful when an answer is something to work on—such as a diagram or small web page—not just information to read. Anthropic’s Artifacts guide notes that access and the dedicated sidebar experience vary by plan and product surface.
2. File creation fit her workflow
Caswell valued Claude’s ability to produce formatted files. But that should not be read as a lasting distinction in which Claude can create files and ChatGPT cannot. OpenAI documents ChatGPT Work workflows for creating and editing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and analyses, with formats including DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Availability depends on plan, workspace settings, file type, and product surface, and the documented flows have caveats. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work guide describes those workflows.

3. She preferred Claude’s writing
Caswell found Claude’s writing more natural for her needs. That is a personal assessment, not evidence that Claude writes better for every reader or task. Anthropic does offer preset and custom Styles: users can describe a desired style or provide writing samples to create one, and the selected style guides new responses and edits. This gives users a way to steer tone; it does not guarantee an exact or consistent imitation. Anthropic’s Styles guide explains the options.
4. Complex instructions seemed easier to enforce
Caswell also felt Claude followed complex instructions more closely. The account does not provide a controlled test or independent benchmark to establish that Claude is generally more reliable at instruction following. The practical question is whether an assistant reliably follows the particular constraints you care about—such as format, tone, source limits, or a sequence of steps—without making you spend time correcting it.

5. Uncertainty felt more visible
The fifth reason was Caswell’s impression that Claude was more open about uncertainty. That, too, is her comparative judgment rather than a measured finding. For consequential work, do not treat a confident or cautious tone as proof: check important claims against dependable sources and ask the assistant to identify what it could not verify.

Claude and ChatGPT both support more than plain chat
Artifacts are a distinctive Claude workflow, but the broader choice is not simply “interactive work in Claude” versus “chat only in ChatGPT.” OpenAI describes Canvas as a workspace for co-writing, editing, and debugging, alongside features such as data analysis, file uploads, Projects, voice, and custom GPTs. Which capabilities you can use depends on the feature, plan, workspace settings, and surface. See OpenAI’s capabilities overview for its current feature descriptions.

Claude Projects provide another way to organize work: paid-plan users can add documents, text, and code to project knowledge and set instructions for chats in that project. A key context detail is that conversations within a Project do not automatically share their chat context; information must be added to project knowledge to be available across chats. Check Anthropic’s Projects guide for the current availability and behavior.

Caswell’s week is useful as a list of workflows to try, not as proof that one assistant is best for everyone. If you often need a standalone interactive output, Claude Artifacts may suit you. If your priority is a particular file format, editing environment, project setup, or voice workflow, compare the current tools available to your account rather than relying on a broad claim that one service can do something the other cannot.

Run a small, fair comparison
- Choose representative tasks. Pick work you actually do, such as revising a document, analyzing a file, following a detailed brief, or producing an interactive output.
- Use the same inputs. Give each assistant the same prompt, source material, constraints, and requested format.
- Compare the work, not the tone alone. Check accuracy, fit to instructions, usefulness of the output, and how much editing you had to do.
- Check the workflow you would rely on. Confirm the relevant feature is available on your plan and surface, and see how it handles project context or file export.
- Include access and cost in your decision. Compare the plans and workspace rules you would actually use; feature availability can vary.
This approach helps distinguish a genuine fit for your work from a preference based on a handful of memorable answers.
