For my overnight routine, sleep earbuds worked better than my AirPods in three specific ways: they put less pressure on my ears when I slept on my side, their sound was suited to masking persistent nighttime noise, and their overnight-focused design fit a full night of listening better. Those are personal-fit and use-case advantages, not proof that sleep earbuds are objectively better for everyone—or a measured comparison with every AirPods model.
Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 are one current example of a product built for sleep. Ozlo describes them as low-profile for side sleeping and rates their battery life at up to 14 hours. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of comfort or runtime for every person. Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 product page.
1. A lower-profile fit can feel better when I sleep on my side
Ordinary earbuds are designed for daytime listening, not necessarily for having a pillow press against them for hours. When I lie on my side, a protruding earbud can create a pressure point or shift in my ear. Sleep earbuds are designed with nighttime wear in mind; Ozlo, for example, describes Sleepbuds 2 as low-profile and intended for side sleepers.
That design may help, but it cannot guarantee a comfortable fit. Ear shape, pillow firmness, how the earbud sits, and how much you move overnight all matter. Treat “side-sleeping” as a design intention, not a promise that a particular model will suit your ears. If wearing an earbud causes pain or persistent discomfort, take it out rather than trying to sleep through it.

- SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
- MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
- 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
- 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
- PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.
2. Sleep-focused masking can suit steady nighttime noise
If the problem is ongoing noise from outside or elsewhere in the home, sleep earbuds may offer sounds intended to make that noise less noticeable. That is different from active noise cancellation (ANC): masking adds or plays sound to cover or blend with disruptive noise, while ANC uses a different approach to reduce some incoming sound. Neither approach guarantees silence, and the better fit depends on the noise and your preferences.
Bose described its discontinued Sleepbuds II as using proprietary noise masking rather than ANC. Steve Romine, then head of Bose’s Health Division, said: “Bose Sleepbuds II use advancements in our proprietary noise masking technology because covering sound — not cancelling it — is a better solution for sleeping.” That is Bose’s explanation of its own product design, not a general finding that masking is always better than ANC. Do not assume that the historical Sleepbuds II features describe Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 or AirPods.

For me, the appeal of a sleep-oriented sound approach is that it can make a recurring background disturbance less prominent without treating the earbuds as ordinary all-purpose headphones. It will not block every sound, and it is worth considering whether you need to hear an alarm, a child, or another important sound overnight.
3. Overnight runtime and sound behavior can fit a night better
Battery life matters when you want audio to last through the night rather than just a commute or workout. Ozlo states that Sleepbuds 2 offer up to 14 hours of battery life. “Up to” is the manufacturer’s specification; it does not establish how long a particular person’s earbuds will last at a chosen volume or in a particular mode.

- Gentle Tap Controls for Night Use: Euno 7 sleep ear buds feature easy tap controls in Normal mode, allowing these sleep buds to manage music, track changes, calls, volume, and voice assistant with simple taps. Controls can also be customised in the app for a more personalised experience. In Sleep mode, most tap functions are disabled, keeping only a four-tap gesture to switch or exit modes—helping reduce accidental touches and support more uninterrupted sleep.
- Long-Lasting Battery with LED Display: Euno 7 Sleep Earphones provide up to 6–8 hours of playback on a single charge, with additional power from the charging case for extended use. These headphones for sleeping support overnight listening and everyday convenience. USB-C fast charging helps reduce downtime, while the LED display on the case clearly shows the remaining battery level of both the earbuds and charging case.
Sleep earbuds may also be designed around a narrower nighttime role than general-purpose earbuds. For example, Bose said in 2020 that Sleepbuds II were not designed for calls or streaming music. That description applies to that historical Bose model only; check the current specifications of any model you are considering. If you want calls, podcasts, or a broad music library, general-purpose earbuds may be a better match.

Nightly use involves trade-offs beyond fit and sound. Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, said: “A lot of people use earbuds to help them relax or block out noise. It can be OK, but it depends on how you’re using them.” Cleveland Clinic’s guidance highlights possible hearing risks from prolonged loud listening, earwax buildup, moisture and infection risk, pressure discomfort, and difficulty hearing important sounds. - Consider whether you need to hear alarms or emergencies. An external speaker is another way to play sleep sounds without putting a device in your ears.
- Stop using earbuds overnight if you notice pain, hearing changes, or signs of an ear infection, and seek medical advice.
Sleep earbuds are a practical option when their fit and sound approach solve a specific nighttime problem. They are not a treatment for a sleep or hearing condition, and comfort and results will vary from person to person.
