You may be able to turn an old server into a home NAS with OpenMediaVault (OMV), provided its hardware is supported by Debian and its drives and network hardware are in working order. OMV 8 currently documents two routes: install its ISO on bare-metal AMD64 hardware, or install OMV on an existing Debian 13 system. Before you reuse the machine, check its storage layout and condition—OMV’s normal setup keeps the operating system on a separate disk from the data it serves.
What OpenMediaVault does for an old server
OpenMediaVault is Debian-based NAS software administered through a web interface. It is designed primarily for homes and small home offices, and supports common ways to access shared files, including SMB/CIFS and NFS. That makes it a possible way to repurpose a supported PC or server without buying a dedicated NAS, but it does not establish that every older machine will work well. The processor, controller, network interface, and connected drives still need to be supported by Debian.
OMV provides the NAS operating environment and management interface; your old server supplies the actual processor, memory, storage connections, and network hardware. The project documentation does not establish the performance, power consumption, or reliability of the particular server in this title. Those depend on the machine and its condition.
Check the server before choosing an installation route
Confirm hardware support and condition
Identify the server’s processor architecture, RAM, network adapter, storage controller, drive interfaces, and available drive bays. OMV supports x86-64 and ARM platforms, subject to Debian hardware support. Confirm the actual components rather than assuming that an old server’s age or product label guarantees compatibility.

Inspect the health of disks that will hold data, and verify that the controller or enclosure exposes the information you need. OMV documentation says SMART support depends on the device and connection; it specifically covers disks connected to an HBA in pass-through mode. For USB-connected devices, the FAQ says support relies on smartmontools auto-detection. Check that health monitoring works through your actual connection before relying on it.
Use the project’s RAM guidance as a starting point
OpenMediaVault’s prerequisites page lists 1 GiB RAM as a minimum, recommends at least 4 GiB for novice administrators, and calls 8 GiB best practice for basic operations in the default installation. These are project recommendations, not measured requirements for every workload or a guarantee of good performance from an unspecified server. File serving alone and a server running additional services can place very different demands on the hardware.

Plan separate system and data storage
In the normal OMV arrangement, the operating system and user data belong on different disks. The project’s prerequisites state: “The data storage drive must be a different disk drive than the system disk drive where the operating system is installed.” The FAQ describes additional partitions on an OS disk as a specialized exception, not the ordinary storage layout.

Existing healthy drives may be enough; a new drive is not automatically required. If you consider adding a 2.5-inch SATA SSD for the system, first confirm the server has a compatible connector, form factor, and available bay. OMV supports SSDs, but it does not require one, and the documentation does not establish that an SSD will make this particular server faster.

Additionally, specialized sound-absorbing panels and vibration damping measures contribute to a quieter operation, with noise levels reduced by up to 50% compared to the previous generation. In standby mode, the noise level drops below 21 dB(A), creating a remarkably quiet user environment
Before reformatting, rebuilding an array, or installing an operating system, preserve a separate backup of any data you need. OMV supports software RAID, but an array alone is not a backup against deletion, theft, or loss of the machine.
Choose how to install OMV 8
The current official installation page describes OMV 8 (Synchrony) for Debian 13 (Trixie) and also provides a bare-metal installation route for AMD64 hardware. Use the project’s current installation page and downloads page for the applicable instructions and media rather than relying on an old third-party command or installer.

| OMV ISO on bare-metal AMD64 | You want OMV installed directly on the server and the hardware is AMD64. | The project describes a text-based installer that handles disk and partition selection, network-interface configuration, and initial setup. It is intended to work for headless servers as well. |
| Install OMV on an existing Debian 13 system | The server already runs Debian 13 and you want to use the project’s documented command-line installation method. | Follow the current official instructions for the installation method and system prerequisites. |
Keep installation media distinct from the installed system
A USB flash drive can be used to create bootable installation media. That is different from installing OMV onto a USB stick and using it as the system disk: the OMV FAQ warns that the software does not optimize writes to the OS disk for USB flash media and says such media may start failing within weeks. The RAID documentation also says not to use production RAID arrays with USB-connected drives. Do not treat a USB installer, a USB system disk, and USB-attached data or RAID storage as equivalent choices.
Decide whether reuse suits your needs
Reusing a server you already own can avoid buying a NAS chassis, but the old machine may still need a system disk, replacement data drives, or other repairs. Whether reuse is actually cheaper or more suitable depends on the hardware and what you need to store; the documentation provides no price comparison or benchmark establishing a universal winner.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Compare the two options on the factors that affect your own setup:
- How many drives and how much usable capacity you need.
- Whether the machine supports your drives, controller, and network connection.
- The server’s RAM and CPU for your intended services.
- Power draw measured on the actual server or NAS, plus noise and physical size.
- How comfortable you are maintaining a Linux-based storage system versus a dedicated NAS interface.
For a basic file server, OMV may be a practical reuse option if the hardware is compatible and the storage layout is sound. If you plan to add media streaming, containers, or other services, assess those workloads separately rather than assuming the basic RAM guidance guarantees a satisfactory experience.
Set up storage with a recovery plan
Once OMV is installed, use its web interface to manage the system and configure file storage and access. The supported protocols include SMB/CIFS and NFS; choose and configure the sharing method appropriate for the devices on your network. Keep another copy of important files on separate storage or in another location: RAID can address some disk-failure scenarios, but it does not replace a backup.
For disks behind an HBA, use pass-through mode where applicable and confirm SMART data is visible. For USB-connected devices, check actual smartmontools detection rather than assuming the enclosure exposes drive health. If a disk’s health status is unavailable or uncertain, treat that as a limitation in your ability to monitor it.
