Google Antigravity can make a VS Code workflow substantially more productive, but “cut my coding time in half” is a personal result, not a Google-verified benchmark. The difference comes from delegating multi-file implementation, tests, browser checks and parallel tasks to supervised agents while keeping an editor for inspection and final control.
What changed when I moved from a conventional VS Code workflow
Google introduced Antigravity on November 18, 2025, as an agentic development platform. Its central idea is to move beyond autocomplete and chat: an agent can read a repository, create a plan, edit several files, run terminal commands, test the result and report what it did.
The workflow is split between two related surfaces. The synchronous Editor view retains familiar coding tools such as Tab completions, inline commands and an agent side panel. The asynchronous Agent Manager acts as a mission-control screen where you can start, coordinate and observe agents working across workspaces.

Why the time savings can be real
The largest gains do not come from typing faster. They come from removing handoffs and waiting between tasks.
- Multi-file delegation: A feature request can become an implementation plan and coordinated edits across the repository.
- Background execution: An agent can run tests or other terminal work while you inspect code elsewhere.
- Parallel agents: Independent tasks can run at the same time across workspaces instead of waiting in one foreground session.
- Browser verification: Browser control lets an agent exercise a user interface and return recordings or screenshots.
- Structured review: Plans, artifacts and inline diffs make it easier to review a coherent change than a series of disconnected suggestions.
These are documented capabilities, not proof that every developer will be twice as fast. No official source reports a 50% coding-time reduction, and no independent controlled benchmark establishes that figure. A credible personal measurement should include the task type, baseline time, agent execution time, review and correction time, and the measurement period.
How Antigravity fits inside VS Code
Google’s official VS Code extension brings the agent workflow into the editor many developers already use. Install it from the VS Code Marketplace by searching for Google Antigravity, install the extension, then sign in from the Activity Bar.
The extension is described as a context-aware development partner that can plan and execute multi-step work, create sandboxed subagents, run terminal tests, connect external tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and perform complex refactorings under supervision.

The August 18, 2026 version 1.0.0 release added sidebar chat, inline diff review, interactive implementation-plan artifacts and Remote-SSH support. It also lists accept/reject controls, an artifact viewer for plans and Markdown, workspace-scoped conversations, automatic backend installation and integrity verification.
A practical task loop
- Describe the outcome: State the feature, bug or refactor and include constraints such as affected packages, API contracts and required tests.
- Request a plan first: Ask Antigravity to inspect the repository and produce an implementation plan before changing files.
- Inspect the plan artifact: Check assumptions, file scope, migration steps and test strategy. Ask for corrections before execution.
- Authorize implementation: Let the agent edit in its sandbox and create any needed subagents for independent work.
- Run verification: Have it execute the project’s tests and, for UI work, use browser checks where appropriate.
- Review the evidence: Read the summary, test output, screenshots or recordings and inspect inline diffs in VS Code.
- Accept, reject or comment: Keep the changes, send the agent back to fix a problem, or reject the patch and revise the plan.
- Finish locally: Use VS Code for compiler diagnostics, code-path inspection and small, precise adjustments.
This division of labor matters. Google’s extension announcement says the editor remains essential for examining code paths, compiler diagnostics and localized edits; Antigravity is not a reason to abandon those controls.
Antigravity versus a traditional VS Code workflow
| Decision axis | Conventional VS Code workflow | Antigravity-assisted workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Delegation depth | Autocomplete, commands and chat suggestions | Plans, multi-file edits, subagents, terminal execution and end-to-end refactoring |
| Verification | Developer runs tests and reviews generated code directly | Agents can run tests and return plans, diffs, screenshots and browser recordings for review |
| Concurrency | Usually one foreground editing session | Asynchronous agents can work in parallel across workspaces |
| Editor continuity | All work happens in the familiar editor | The extension keeps the editor while Agent Manager handles orchestration; separate app and CLI surfaces are also available |
| Integrations | Local files, extensions and terminal tools | Those capabilities plus browser automation, MCP connections and Remote-SSH in the extension release |
| Control model | Direct manual edits | Supervised execution with plan inspection and accept/reject review |
Antigravity’s newer surfaces
Google I/O 2026 described Antigravity 2.0 as more than an editor extension. It includes a standalone desktop app for parallel multi-agent orchestration, an Antigravity CLI for terminal-first work and an Antigravity SDK for building custom agent behaviors hosted on your own infrastructure.
That creates a choice rather than a single replacement path: keep the VS Code extension for editor continuity, use the desktop app when orchestration is the priority, or choose the CLI for terminal-centric teams. The underlying comparison is whether you want an editor with an agent beside it or an agent system that coordinates the editor, terminal and browser.

Installation, access and usage limits
Google’s November 2025 launch post placed Antigravity in public preview at no charge and described generous Gemini 3 Pro rate limits. Google I/O 2026 later announced a Google AI Ultra plan starting at $100 per month, with a stated Antigravity usage limit five times higher than the AI Pro plan.
Pricing, quotas and availability can change. Treat those figures as announcements for the cited periods, not permanent terms, and verify the current plan before adopting Antigravity for a team.
Individual developers can sign in to the VS Code extension with any Antigravity plan, including the free tier. Enterprise users are directed to Gemini Enterprise or Google Cloud credentials and must account for Google Cloud Terms of Service, IAM policies and VPC Service Controls. Google says enterprise data is not used to train foundation models.
There is an important product distinction for organizations: the IDE overview says Antigravity IDE is not supported for enterprise customers. Enterprise teams should use the Antigravity app or CLI instead of assuming the IDE-like surface is available under their governance model.

What to measure before claiming a 50% improvement
If you want to test a result like mine rather than repeat a slogan, record comparable work over a defined period.
- Choose several recurring tasks, such as a multi-file feature, a refactor, a test repair and a UI change.
- Record manual baseline time, including test runs, context switching and review.
- Record agent execution time separately from your planning, review and correction time.
- Track rejected edits, retries, flaky tests and time spent fixing incorrect assumptions.
- Compare equivalent tasks rather than one unusually easy or agent-friendly example.
The useful number is total time to an accepted, tested change. Counting only the minutes an agent spends writing code will overstate the benefit; counting review and recovery gives a result another developer can understand.

The plan is plausible but wrong
Require a plan artifact before multi-file edits. Check repository conventions, public interfaces, data migrations and rollback needs before authorizing implementation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tests pass but behavior is incomplete
Ask for explicit test coverage and inspect the diff yourself. For front-end work, require browser evidence rather than relying only on unit tests.
Best Value
Parallel work creates conflicting edits
Split agents by clearly separated files or responsibilities, then integrate through one review pass. Do not assume parallel execution removes merge risk.
Usage limits interrupt long tasks
Break large missions into checkpoints, monitor quota consumption and keep a conventional terminal workflow available for urgent fixes.
Enterprise policy blocks the IDE surface
Confirm identity, IAM and VPC Service Controls requirements first. If your organization is covered by the IDE restriction, evaluate the app or CLI path instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan Antigravity replace VS Code?
For individual developers, the extension can replace much of the manual workflow while leaving VS Code as the inspection and control surface. It does not eliminate the need to understand the code, review diffs or diagnose failures.
For enterprise teams, the answer depends on governance and product surface. The IDE itself is documented as unsupported for enterprise customers, while the app and CLI are the intended options. Antigravity is therefore better understood as an agentic layer around development tools than as a universal one-for-one replacement for VS Code.
