Free tools can cover the basic jobs of a password manager, VPN, and antivirus, but they are not automatic equivalents to every paid plan. Bitwarden or Proton Pass offer free password-management options, Proton VPN publishes a free plan with a one-device limit, and Microsoft lists a free Defender PC app. Whether the switch saves you $300 depends on the subscriptions you actually cancel, what you give up, and any replacement costs.
Can free tools replace all three services?
They can be workable replacements if their free-plan limits match your needs. Evaluate each category separately: a password manager stores and syncs credentials, a VPN routes device traffic through a VPN service, and antivirus or endpoint protection helps detect threats on supported devices. None substitutes for the others, and a free tier may omit features you use in a paid product.
The $300 figure is an individual savings claim, not a typical or independently established result. To substantiate it, compare the charges you actually stopped paying with any costs incurred for the replacements.

Both services publish free individual options with broad core features. The right choice depends on details such as sharing, recovery, export, device support, and any premium-only feature you rely on—not simply the number of stored passwords.

Before moving your vault, check whether the free plan supports the number of people who need shared access, your browsers and operating systems, autofill, recovery, and exporting your data. A service’s published feature list does not establish that it is categorically more secure than another manager.
Bitwarden’s pricing page lists Premium at $1.65 per month billed annually ($19.80 per year) and Families at $3.99 per month billed annually ($47.88 per year), in USD before taxes. These are vendor-listed prices and can change; check the current pricing page before making a decision.

Free VPN: what Proton VPN’s plan includes—and what it does not
Proton VPN advertises its free plan as having no ads, no data limits, and no artificial speed limits. Its free-plan listing specifies one device. The service says it supports Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and browser platforms; server and feature selection can differ by plan. Confirm current terms on Proton VPN’s free-plan page and plan comparison.

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service and changes the IP address websites see. It does not make all browsing anonymous, secure your accounts by itself, or replace endpoint protection and safe online behavior. The cited plan pages are Proton’s own descriptions, not independent speed, streaming, or reliability tests.

Check how many devices you need connected at once, which server locations and features you rely on, and whether the free plan’s choices work for your intended use. A one-device allowance may be a meaningful restriction even when the service supports many operating systems.
Free antivirus and device protection: understand Defender’s scope
Microsoft lists Microsoft Defender as a free PC security app in its U.S. Store security category. That listing establishes availability, not comparative effectiveness or parity with every paid antivirus suite. Microsoft Store free PC security apps.

Microsoft also describes Defender for Individuals across Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS. Some features depend on a Microsoft 365 subscription, functionality has limits or dependencies on Windows and iOS in some contexts, and availability varies by region. Check the Microsoft Defender for Individuals page for the features and eligibility applicable to your device and location.
Before uninstalling a paid product, verify what protection is active on each device and whether a feature you value requires a separate subscription. Avoid running overlapping real-time antivirus products unless the vendors’ guidance says that configuration is supported.

How to calculate whether you saved $300
Use your own renewal notices, invoices, and bundle details. The calculation is:
Annual savings = annual charges genuinely avoided − replacement costs
- List the subscriptions you actually canceled and the amount you would otherwise have paid over a full year.
- Adjust for renewal discounts, taxes, partial-year refunds, and any promotional price that would not have recurred.
- If a service was bundled with other benefits, count only the cost you genuinely avoided. Do not count the full bundle price if you kept the bundle or would still pay for its other services.
- Add any costs for replacement plans or features needed to match your setup, then subtract that amount from the canceled charges.
State the currency and country when reporting the result. If the net is $300, describe it as your own annualized savings based on the charges canceled—not as an expected saving for everyone. The available product listings establish free options and their stated limits, but they do not verify any particular person’s previous bills or the $300 arithmetic.
