A local large language model can replace web search for some private, offline tasks, but not for current facts, local information, exact pages or verification. I spent a week testing Gemma 4 E2B on an Android phone through Google’s Edge Gallery app, using it instead of Perplexity whenever a question appeared not to require the internet. The result was a more useful boundary between local AI and search—not a total replacement for either.

What I tested

The experiment used Gemma 4 E2B running on the phone rather than in a remote data center. I asked it questions through Edge Gallery and compared the experience with the web-connected AI search tools I normally use. This was a qualitative, first-person trial, not a controlled benchmark: I did not measure a fixed sample size, error rate, battery drain, temperature, or performance across a named handset model.

The model’s knowledge cutoff was January 2025. That limitation became important whenever a question depended on events or information after that date.

Where the offline model worked well

Math and other self-contained problems

Gemma solved high-school mathematics without needing a network connection. Problems with all the necessary information in the prompt were a good fit because the model did not need to retrieve anything current or identify an outside source.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Image-based ideas

After I uploaded an image, it suggested balcony and wall colors. This was useful as a brainstorming partner: I could ask for several directions and refine them conversationally without sending the image to a cloud service.

Summaries and extraction

Long passages were another strong use case. The model summarized text and extracted specific details from a supplied passage, tasks where the source material itself provides the facts. It also generated concepts and variations during brainstorming.

Where it failed as a search replacement

Historical facts were not automatically reliable

I encountered multiple hallucinations even when asking historical factual questions. A fluent answer was not evidence that the answer was correct. Because the model was offline, it could not check a source, retrieve a correction or show me the page from which a claim came.

Current information forced a switch back online

Follow-up questions about recent developments quickly crossed the local model’s boundary. Current events, changing product details, today’s schedules and other time-sensitive facts required a web-connected service. The same was true when I needed local information or a particular page rather than a general explanation.

Simple prompts produced too much text

The model often over-answered straightforward questions. Its equation formatting was also difficult to read, which made some mathematical explanations less practical than their underlying reasoning suggested.

Local LLM versus web-connected search

Need Local LLM on the phone Web-connected search or AI
Freshness Limited to the model and its cutoff; this test used a January 2025 cutoff. Can retrieve newer information, subject to the service’s index and update speed.
Factual reliability Can hallucinate without a retrieval step or citation. Can locate source material, but results still require checking.
Privacy Prompts and uploaded material remain on the device during local processing. Queries and files may be sent to a provider, depending on its settings and policy.
Offline access Available without a connection once the model is installed and loaded. Normally depends on an internet connection.
Startup and continuity Reloading or switching back to the app took time, and resuming older chats was not seamless. Usually offers faster continuity within an established online session.
Best fit Summarization, extraction, rewriting, brainstorming, image-based suggestions and self-contained problems. Current events, local information, exact pages, navigation and verification.

The practical split workflow

The most dependable approach is to assign each question to the tool that has the information and privacy characteristics it needs.

  1. Start locally when the material is yours. Summarize a document, extract names or dates from a passage, rewrite notes, brainstorm ideas or solve a self-contained exercise without uploading the content.
  2. Stay local for privacy-sensitive prompts. If the task does not need outside facts, on-device processing avoids sending the prompt or image to a remote service. This is a privacy advantage, not a guarantee that every local app has identical storage or telemetry behavior.
  3. Move to web search for anything time-sensitive. Check current news, prices, schedules, regulations, software releases and other facts that may have changed since the model’s cutoff.
  4. Use the web when location or an exact source matters. Finding a nearby business, opening a particular government page or confirming the wording of a document requires retrieval, not just generated text.
  5. Verify important claims independently. A local model’s confident wording cannot substitute for a primary source, especially for historical or technical facts.

What using it on a phone was actually like

The hardware requirement is straightforward: an Android smartphone capable of running an on-device LLM app, with enough available memory for the model and the app. Compatibility, available RAM and performance vary by handset; this experiment did not establish a minimum specification or test a particular phone.

The friction was operational rather than conceptual. Restarting the app or switching back to it took time while the model initialized. Older conversations did not always resume smoothly. Those delays matter when a question could have been answered faster by opening a browser.

What the week changed

The experiment changed my default question from “Which AI is best?” to “Does this task need the web?” Local execution is compelling when the input is private and the answer can be derived from the supplied material. It is the wrong tool when freshness, geography, a named source or factual verification determines whether the answer is useful.

As Android Police author Rahul Naskar put it: “A local LLM can’t replace an AI model that browses the internet.” The week’s results support that narrower conclusion. A local model is a capable offline assistant and a valuable privacy option, while search remains the necessary layer for discovering and checking the changing world.
