A month-long personal test reported by XDA Developers found that a small language model running on an iPhone 16 handled roughly 90% of one author’s former Claude and ChatGPT prompts. That is a useful result for everyday tasks—not proof that phone-based models match leading cloud assistants overall. The reported wins were routine jobs such as rewording email and answering quick questions; complex reasoning and requests for current information remained better suited to cloud tools.
What the 90% result actually means
The 90% figure is the author’s estimate for prompts they personally used to send to Claude and ChatGPT during a month-long trial, as summarized by TheOutpost.AI’s account of the XDA Developers report. The original XDA article was not accessible, and the summary does not provide the prompt list, denominator, scoring rules, or a prompt-by-prompt comparison. Treat the number as an individual experience, not a measured success rate for phone models or a finding that local models are generally equivalent to Claude or ChatGPT.
The result is still informative about task fit: many ordinary prompts do not need a frontier-scale model or a connection to a cloud service. If a request is short, familiar, and easy to check, a compact local model may be sufficient. A single percentage cannot tell you whether it will be sufficient for your own work.

These examples come from the summary of the author’s test, not independently verified prompt logs. They illustrate a practical boundary: local models can be handy for straightforward text transformations and simple questions, but their answers still need checking when accuracy matters. A model can also give a confident-sounding wrong answer, whether it runs on a phone or in the cloud.

It reports trying small models in quantized formats, which use reduced-precision representations to lower memory and compute demands. That trade-off makes models more practical on constrained hardware, but different model sizes and quantizations can change both output quality and speed.

Tokens per second describes text generation speed, not answer quality or the time needed to load a model. The reported figures are useful as an example of how model choice changes the experience on that particular phone, but they are not a device-wide performance guarantee. Memory, model size, quantization, context length, and app support all affect what a phone can run comfortably.

The summary says complex queries can still benefit from cloud models. That matters when a task calls for several steps of reasoning, nuanced judgment, or a dependable answer that is costly to verify. Cloud services may also have access to current web information or connected tools that a local model does not. A locally running model should not be treated as current just because the phone has an internet connection: access to fresh information depends on the app and the workflow, not merely the device.

Choose based on the task rather than assuming one approach is always better. For routine edits and calculations, a local model may be convenient. For challenging analysis, current facts, or tool-dependent work, use a cloud service when its capabilities are needed, and verify consequential answers.
Trying a local model with Google AI Edge Gallery
Google’s AI Edge Gallery project README describes an experimental beta with features including AI Chat, Ask Image, Audio Scribe, and Agent Skills. It lists Android 12+ and iOS 17+ as minimum operating-system requirements; check the project’s current instructions because requirements and features can change. The official guide describes the app as experimental on Android and says local use can continue without an internet connection after a model has been loaded.

- Check the project’s current installation instructions and confirm your phone meets the listed OS requirements.
- Install the app and obtain a compatible model. Model downloads or other setup steps may require an internet connection.
- Load the model, then use AI Chat to test prompts you actually rely on. Keep the same prompts for any local-versus-cloud comparison.
- Evaluate answer quality as well as speed. Try routine edits, factual questions, and any task where an error would matter to you.
- Test offline behavior after the model is loaded, and separately check whether features such as image or audio input work with your chosen model and setup.
The app documentation supports this general workflow; it does not establish that every model or feature works offline in every circumstance. Nor does the app’s feature list demonstrate the accuracy of the reported 90% result.

How to decide whether local AI is a fit
A useful comparison is a small, personal test rather than a headline percentage. Use prompts from your real routine and judge whether the answers are usable—not simply whether the app returns something.

- Quality: Check correctness, completeness, and whether the model follows the requested tone or format.
