You can keep an Obsidian vault on a NAS or use a separate self-hosted sync service instead of Obsidian Sync. That does not mean Obsidian Sync itself runs on your NAS: Obsidian says it has no on-premises Sync server. And the title’s $96 annual saving is a personal claim, not a figure established by current list prices. As of 2026, Obsidian lists Sync Standard at $4 per user per month when billed annually—$48 for twelve months.

What “giving your vault to a NAS” can mean

An Obsidian vault is a folder of local plain-text Markdown files. Obsidian says those files can be synced between devices in several ways, including network-attached storage (NAS), Git, and third-party services. Its documentation describes NAS as one possible method, not a guaranteed configuration for every device or network.

There are two different arrangements readers may mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • NAS storage: the vault files live in a shared folder on the NAS. Whether a phone or computer can use that folder directly depends on the device and how the NAS is connected.
  • NAS-based synchronization: a separate app, plugin, or server copies vault files between devices and a NAS-hosted location. The NAS is the storage or server component; Obsidian Sync is not installed on it.

Obsidian’s team-sync documentation says, “Because Obsidian stores your data in plain text .md files, there are numerous options available to sync data across devices.” The same page says there is no on-premises Obsidian Sync solution at this time.

Does a NAS setup really save $96 a year?

Obsidian’s pricing page currently lists Sync Standard at $4 USD per user per month with annual billing, or $48 for twelve months at that listed rate. Monthly billing is $5 per user per month. The $96 in the title cannot be verified against those current prices: the author’s plan, dates, currency, and underlying calculation are not established.

Option Published price and limits What the price does not establish
Sync Standard $4 USD per user per month billed annually; one synced vault, 1 GB total storage, 5 MB maximum file size, and one month of version history. Whether this is the plan or historical price behind the title’s $96 figure.
Sync Standard, monthly $5 USD per user per month billed monthly; the same Standard plan limits. The total cost or performance of a NAS alternative.
Sync Plus $8 USD per user per month billed annually; ten synced vaults, 10 GB total storage, 200 MB maximum file size, and twelve months of version history. Whether Plus is a relevant comparison for the author’s setup.
Sync Plus, monthly $10 USD per user per month billed monthly; the same Plus plan limits. The total cost or performance of a NAS alternative.

These are Obsidian’s listed prices and plan limits, accessed in 2026; check the pricing page for current terms. A fair comparison also counts the NAS’s purchase and operating costs, maintenance, security measures, and independent backup. If you already own a suitable NAS or always-available host, you may not need new hardware, but a NAS is not automatically a zero-cost substitute.

What you give up—or need to replace—without Sync

Obsidian Sync bundles conveniences that a NAS arrangement may not provide by itself. The service advertises offline work followed by synchronization after reconnecting, selective syncing for media and PDFs, settings and preferences sync, activity details, file recovery, and version history. The listed history is one month on Standard and twelve months on Plus.

Advanced encryption and granular permission controls keep your files protected whether they're stored locally or shared with family and friends. Set up dedicated spaces for each user, so everyone gets seamless access across devices while keeping personal files truly personal. Privacy isn't a feature; it's the foundation.
  • Does it sync to each computer and phone you use, including while away from home?
  • Does it include attachments and the Obsidian configuration folder, or only Markdown notes?
  • How does it handle simultaneous edits, conflicts, deletions, and recovery of an earlier file version?
  • Can you work offline and reconcile changes when the connection returns?
  • How will you connect remotely, and what happens when the NAS or home network is unavailable?
  • Is there a separate backup that can recover data if a deletion or corruption is synchronized everywhere?

These are setup-dependent questions, not results from a controlled reliability or cost comparison between NAS products and Obsidian Sync.

Encryption and backups are separate concerns

Obsidian documents two encryption choices for a remote Sync vault. End-to-end encryption is the default for a new remote vault; Obsidian says it cannot recover the password or unlock the encrypted remote data if that password is lost. Standard encryption uses a key managed by Obsidian. The company describes its E2EE implementation as AES-256 with scrypt key derivation.

  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

That remote-vault protection does not mean Obsidian encrypts the local vault: its security documentation says local vault files are not encrypted by Obsidian. A NAS or third-party sync tool has its own security design, access controls, and remote-access risks; evaluate the specific implementation rather than treating “self-hosted” as synonymous with secure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Syncing is also not the same as backing up. If a deletion or damaged file propagates to every copy, synchronization alone may not give you an independent recovery point. Obsidian’s recovery guidance recommends making a full vault backup before disconnecting devices and creating a new remote vault after losing an E2EE password. Keep a separate backup with a recovery process you understand, whichever sync method you choose.

Self-hosted Obsidian sync projects to evaluate

Obsidian’s community directory and project repositories list third-party options; they are examples, not an exhaustive or independently tested ranking. Project compatibility, feature claims, and maturity can change, so check their current documentation before relying on one.

  • Osync (Self-Hosted): its community-directory listing describes a self-hosted server, encryption, desktop and mobile support, configurable attachment and .obsidian configuration syncing, and version history. At the time the listing was checked, it showed version 2.5.0 and Obsidian 1.11.4+ compatibility; these are time-sensitive listing details, not a guarantee of current compatibility.
  • Lockstep Sync: its community-directory listing describes a server that can run on a Linux host or as a container, encryption, conflict handling, and revision or recovery history. These are project claims, not independently reproduced results.
  • avbel/obsidian-sync: its repository describes a self-hosted plugin and synchronization server with encryption, history, and near-real-time propagation. The project labels itself early and notes that some described plugin surfaces are not yet implemented.

For any option, verify where the server runs, how mobile devices connect, what files and settings are included, how conflicts and deletions are handled, and how to restore from an independent backup.

Who should consider the NAS route?

A NAS-based arrangement can make sense if you already have suitable hardware or want to manage your own storage and are comfortable maintaining the sync and backup pieces. It is a less straightforward fit if you expect a supported, low-maintenance service across devices or need built-in version history and recovery without administering another system.
