You can make Windows 11 feel more responsive without buying new hardware by finding what is slowing it down and changing only the settings tied to that problem. Start with Task Manager, then address unnecessary startup activity or low storage; visual effects and power mode are optional tradeoffs, not guaranteed speed boosts.

Find the bottleneck before changing settings

A slow PC can have several causes, including low storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, or older hardware. Task Manager can show whether CPU, memory, or disk activity is unusually high, but a single busy moment does not necessarily identify the cause.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, review CPU, Memory, and Disk activity. Close only apps you recognize and are not using.
  3. Open Performance to see resource activity over time. If a resource is repeatedly near its limit, investigate what is using it rather than repeatedly ending unfamiliar processes.
  4. Open Startup apps to review programs configured to launch when you sign in.

Microsoft’s Tips to improve PC performance in Windows does not promise a universal speed increase. The useful approach is to change one relevant setting at a time and check whether the specific symptom improves.

Reduce unnecessary startup activity

Apps that launch with Windows can lengthen sign-in and keep using resources in the background. Disable only items you do not need to start automatically; a program can usually still be opened when you want it.

Keep security tools, accessibility components, device utilities, and anything you rely on immediately after sign-in enabled. For apps that offer it, Windows may also provide a Background app permissions control; availability varies by app. Microsoft describes startup management in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Check free space and clean selectively

Open File Explorer and select This PC to check available space on the Windows drive. Low storage can be associated with slower performance and can also interfere with installing updates. If space is tight, use Windows’ cleanup options rather than deleting files you do not recognize.

Review Cleanup recommendations

Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps before selecting anything to remove. Microsoft’s Free up drive space in Windows explains the cleanup options.

Configure Storage Sense carefully

Go to Settings > System > Storage and open Storage Sense. It can remove temporary files and, depending on your configuration, items in the Recycle Bin. Downloads and cloud files are not removed by default unless you configure Storage Sense to handle them.

Check the selections before running cleanup. Removing a previous Windows installation can take away the option to roll back to the earlier version. See Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense for the settings and their effects.

Move personal files if the drive is still full

If personal files are taking up space, you can move some to another location, such as a USB drive or SD card. This may relieve storage pressure, but external storage does not make the processor or the rest of the PC faster.

Try visual effects or power mode only if the tradeoff fits

Reduce visual effects

Windows visual effects use system resources. Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the matching Control Panel setting, and select Adjust for best performance to reduce effects. This may make the interface feel less polished, and it is not a guaranteed fix. Choose it if responsiveness matters more to you than visual presentation.

Choose a power mode for how you use the PC

Open Settings > System > Power & battery and select a mode under Power mode. Best performance prioritizes performance; Balanced or Best power efficiency may be a better fit for everyday use or working unplugged. Available choices can depend on the device and its configuration. Microsoft cautions that Best performance can use more power; on a laptop, that can mean more heat and faster battery drain. See Change the power mode for your Windows PC.

Let Windows handle drive optimization in most cases

Windows generally optimizes drives automatically on a schedule. The operation differs by drive type: hard disk drives (HDDs) are defragmented, while solid-state drives (SSDs) are trimmed. You can inspect status with the Windows search result for Defragment and Optimize Drives, but do not apply HDD-style manual defragmentation advice to an SSD. Microsoft explains the distinction in Defragment / optimize your data drives in Windows.

Know what these changes can—and cannot—fix

These adjustments address software load, storage pressure, visual effects, and power settings; they cannot remove a hardware limit. Microsoft Support’s performance guidance puts the limit plainly: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If a specific resource remains constrained after relevant software and settings are addressed, that may be the ceiling of the existing hardware rather than a setting you have missed.
