Assembling and wall-mounting a large ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen yourself is possible, but for a UST (ultra short throw) projector it is a two-person job with sharp metal edges, many fiddly fasteners, and alignment that leaves little room for error. Derek Malcolm’s first-person account, published September 27, 2026 by How-To Geek and syndicated by Yahoo Tech, describes a home build that produced a screen he likes, but at the cost of cut fingers, a long tensioning job, and a lesson that he would hire professionals next time. The title’s “nearly ended me” is self-deprecating hyperbole: the story is about cuts and frustration, not a dangerous accident.
What the author built
The screen in the account is a BenQ 100-inch SNS21 Fresnel ALR screen, paired with a UST projector. The author reports that the screen itself cost about $800 at the time of his article. That is one author’s reported setup, not a recommendation of this model over others, and the article does not compare it against other ALR screens for brightness, contrast, or image quality.
The build involved the screen’s frame, its fabric surface, and a mounting system that the author fitted to the wall. He was working alone for much of it, improvising with clamps and a power drill, and he says a helper is important when hoisting the screen into place.

Where the build hurt
Cuts from the aluminum finishing edges
The author says the aluminum finishing edges of the frame cut his fingers during assembly, even though he was wearing the cotton gloves supplied with the screen. He does not claim the gloves are protective, and he does not present this as a general injury rate for ALR screens. The safe reading is narrower: when you handle a frame with exposed metal edges, expect cuts, work slowly, and do not assume that supplied gloves prevent them.

Nearly two dozen spring-loaded tension screws
Fitting the screen’s surface required setting nearly two dozen spring-loaded tension screws. The author found the process laborious, and the difficulty was in getting the surface tensioned evenly so that the finished screen sat flat. This is the part of the job most likely to eat an afternoon, and the part most affected by how many hands are available.
Why a UST projector makes alignment unforgiving
A UST projector sits close to the screen and throws its image upward at a steep angle. The author puts it this way: “A UST projector sits just inches below the screen and throws the light up at a steep angle.” That geometry explains why he found screen level and flatness especially consequential. A screen that is slightly out of level, or not perfectly flat, shows up in the picture far more readily than it would with a distant projector.

Why keystone correction is not a fix
Keystone correction can straighten a skewed image, but the author says it can degrade picture quality or introduce artifacts and light spill when it is used to compensate for a screen that is not properly positioned. The practical lesson is to get the physical placement right first, so the projector is not being asked to correct a mounting error.
Alignment is a separate job
Mounting a screen and getting the image aligned are two different tasks. The author notes that some specialist home-theater shops also align UST images, which is a reason to ask about alignment explicitly when you request a quote, rather than assuming a mounting crew will handle it.

Should you do it yourself or hire someone?
The author’s own verdict is that he would pay for professional assembly and mounting next time. The decision depends on how the job fits your situation, and the following checks will tell you which way to lean.
- Choose DIY only if you have a second adult available for the full hoisting and tensioning sequence, a level wall you can drill safely, and enough time to work through the tension screws slowly.
- Choose a professional if you are using a UST projector, because placement and flatness drive the image quality, or if you have no helper.
- Choose a professional if you are not confident about locating wall structure and drilling into it safely, since mounting errors are hard to correct later.
- Ask any installer explicitly whether they handle UST image alignment, not just mounting.
- Confirm the service before you book: the author’s price observations are local and dated, so check current scope, coverage, and pricing for your area.
Wall-mounted ALR or a motorized floor-rising screen?
The author says that if budget permitted he would consider a motorized floor-rising ALR screen. It arrives as a finished unit, rises out of a cabinet, and avoids wall mounting altogether. The trade-off is cost and placement, and the article does not provide a controlled comparison of the two designs.

Fastener design is a buying factor
The article also points to screen designs with easier-to-access fasteners as a consideration in their own right. As an example, it cites an AWOL Vision screen with bowed leaf-spring fasteners. When you compare models, look at how the fasteners are reached and adjusted, since that determines how much of the job is hands-on work near the frame’s edges. The article also names AWOL Vision, Elite Screens, and Vividstorm among screen makers in the category, but it does not evaluate their products.

If you go the DIY route
Based on what the author ran into, these steps reduce the most common problems. They are drawn from his experience, not from a manufacturer’s installation manual, so follow the screen maker’s instructions where they differ.
- Clear a flat work area large enough to lay the frame out fully, and confirm you have a helper for the hoist.
- Handle the frame by its surfaces and avoid sliding your hands along the aluminum finishing edges; keep the gloves on throughout.
- Set the tension screws in a steady pattern rather than tightening one side fully first, and check the surface for flatness as you go.
- Level the mounting before you commit the final fixings, since the projector’s steep UST throw makes small errors visible.
- Once the screen is up, check the image from the projector’s position before you rely on keystone correction.
If any of these steps stall you, that is the point at which the author’s advice applies: a professional installer who also aligns UST images will likely save the most time and avoid the most rework.
That account is one person’s experience with one screen, and it gives you the lessons to plan around. What it cannot tell you is how a different ALR screen or projector will behave in your room, which is why the points above are worth confirming with your installer or the screen maker before you commit.
