I stopped saving credentials in Google Password Manager, but switching tools was not what made my accounts safer. The meaningful changes were replacing reused or weak passwords, tightening account recovery, and adding phishing-resistant sign-in where it was supported. A password manager helps maintain those protections; no provider switch guarantees them.

What I changed—and what I can claim

I moved my saved passwords to a different password manager and stopped saving new credentials to Google Password Manager. That gave me a separate place to manage logins, but separation by itself is not proof of better security. A manager is only one part of the setup: the strength and uniqueness of passwords, protection of the manager account, security of the devices used to access it, and recovery options all matter.

Google recommends using a trusted password manager to create and manage strong, unique passwords. Reuse is a risk because a password exposed at one site may be tried against another. Google Password Manager includes built-in security and offers an optional on-device encryption feature, but protection depends in part on how credentials are stored and accessed. Google documents both account-based and device-based storage; they are distinct arrangements, not interchangeable labels for one identical setup. Google’s account security guidance and Password Manager documentation explain the relevant controls.

What makes a password-manager setup safer?

Unique passwords and prompt replacement

Use a different password for every important account, especially email, financial services, and accounts that can reset other passwords. A manager can generate and store them, but changing managers does not change passwords already in use. Run Google’s Password Checkup before or after moving and replace credentials it identifies as weak, exposed, or reused. Treat a compromised password as a credential to rotate, not as a reason to merely move its saved copy.

Strong protection for the manager and recovery route

The manager account can expose access to many other accounts, so protect it with a strong, unique password and a sign-in method suited to your threat model. Review recovery email addresses, phone numbers, backup codes, and any trusted devices before depending on the new setup. Keep recovery material somewhere accessible if your usual device is lost, but not alongside an unlocked password collection.

Passkeys and security keys where supported

Passkeys are tied to the site or app that created them and are designed to resist phishing. Chrome’s guidance says biometric data used to unlock a passkey stays on the device. Google Password Manager can sync passkeys across supported devices signed into the same Google Account, so moving passwords does not necessarily mean every passkey is included in a password export. Check each important account’s available sign-in and recovery methods before changing providers. Chrome’s passkey guidance describes passkey behavior.

A passkey used to sign in to a Google Account can also satisfy its second-step requirement because it verifies possession of the device; expect a different sign-in flow if you enable it. Hardware security keys are another strong verification option for supported accounts. Google’s Advanced Protection guidance recommends a primary key and at least one backup for people who choose security keys. Confirm compatibility and retain a recovery route before relying on a key. Google’s 2-Step Verification guidance and Advanced Protection questions cover these options.

How to move passwords without losing access

  1. Inventory what you use. List important accounts, saved passwords, passkeys, recovery codes, and services where you use Google sign-in. Do not assume a password CSV contains passkeys or every kind of credential.
  2. Secure the destination first. Create the new manager account, set its recovery method, and test signing in before importing your full collection.
  3. Export only on a trusted device. In Chrome, use the password-management export option documented by Google. Treat the downloaded export as sensitive plaintext unless its format is explicitly protected. Do not leave it in Downloads, a shared cloud folder, email, or an automatic backup.
  4. Import and check. Import the file into the destination manager, then test a representative set of important logins. Look for missing or duplicated entries. Keep your old access and recovery paths available while you verify the new setup.
  5. Remove the temporary file. After confirming the import, securely remove the exported file and consider whether it was copied into backups or synced folders.
  6. Delete old stored passwords only after testing. Google’s Chrome instructions cover deleting individual passwords or Password Manager data. If passwords remain stored locally in Chrome, distinguish that local store from credentials saved to a Google Account. If your goal is only to stop Google Account syncing, Chrome’s local-storage option may be relevant depending on your setup; it is not the same as transferring credentials to another provider.
  7. Check and update exposed credentials. Run Password Checkup and change weak, reused, or exposed passwords at the affected sites. The move itself does not rotate them.

Google’s instructions for exporting, deleting saved credentials, and running a checkup are in Manage passwords in Chrome. Follow the current steps shown for your Chrome version and account state.

Is Google Password Manager safe?

Google documents security protections, password and passkey storage, and both Google Account and device storage contexts. That does not establish that every configuration has identical protections, nor does encryption alone prevent account takeover. For a practical assessment, ask whether your passwords are unique, whether the account that protects them has strong sign-in and recovery, whether your devices are secured, and whether you can regain access if one is lost. A different manager may suit your privacy preferences, platform mix, or desire to separate credentials, but the brand change alone does not answer those questions.
