If you have a Pixel Watch 3 and a TV that works with Google Home, you can control that TV from your wrist. Add the TV remote tile on the watch, pick your TV, and you get media playback, volume, and a directional pad. It will not replace every button on your physical remote, but for most day-to-day channel-surfing and playback it covers the basics when the remote is nowhere to be found.
What you need before you start
Google’s TV-control help page lists three prerequisites: a Pixel Watch, a TV compatible with Google Home, and the latest Google Home app. Google names Google TV Streamer and Chromecast with Google TV as examples of compatible devices. Other Google Home-compatible TVs are also covered, so check the TV’s own listing before assuming it qualifies.
Hardware support is narrower than the Google Home app’s support. As of Google’s current help page, the TV remote tile is available on Pixel Watch 3 and is not yet available on other Wear OS watches. Because Google can change eligibility, check the help page for the current model list before you buy a watch or a streaming device for this purpose.

You need a Google Account, a watch running Wear OS 3 or newer, and an Android 9.0 or newer phone connected to Wi-Fi or LTE. The latest Google Home app must be installed on both the phone and the watch, and your devices must already be set up in Google Home on the phone. How to add the TV remote tile
- On the watch, open the tile library and add the TV remote tile, then open it.
- If your home and TV are already set up in Google Home, choose the TV you want to control from the tile.
- If you have more than one home or Google Account, select the correct account and home first, then pick the TV.
- If the TV does not appear, it is not yet in Google Home. Add it in the Google Home app on your phone, then return to the tile.
The tile controls one TV at a time. If you have a bedroom set and a living-room set, switch the selected TV in the tile when you move between them.
What the watch can do
The tile gives you four groups of controls, as Google documents them:

- Media controls: play, pause, stop, progress, previous, and next.
- Volume: raise and lower the volume, and Google also describes turning the TV on from the watch.
- Virtual D-pad: directional movement and a center select button for menus and app navigation.
- Power: Google Home for Wear OS lists turning a TV on or off among its entertainment controls.
Treat this list as the complete set of documented functions. The tile does not reproduce every button on a physical remote, and Google’s pages do not list voice search or the other buttons on the Google TV remote as tile functions.

- Install all pending updates from the Play Store on the watch.
- Check the Google Home app version on the watch. If it is 2.27.65.4 or later and the tile still does not show, force-stop Google Home, reopen it, and look for its “What’s new” notice.
- Wait. If updates do not show up right away, Google says configuration changes can take up to four hours and a watch restart to apply.
- Restart the watch, then restart the phone, if the tile is still missing.
When the watch volume controls the wrong TV
If the watch’s volume buttons adjust a different TV than the one you selected, go to the TV’s settings and follow this route:
- Open Settings on the TV.
- Select Remotes & Accessories.
- Select Setup Remote Buttons, then Volume Control.
- Choose the TV you want the watch to control.
Menu labels can vary by TV brand, model, and region. If the names differ on your screen, look for the equivalent remote-button or volume-control setting in the same area of the TV’s menus.

The phone fallback on Android
If the watch is unavailable, the Google TV app on an Android phone can control a Google TV or Android TV. This is useful when the physical remote is missing and the watch is out of reach or unsupported. The app’s pairing steps are:
- Open the Google TV app and select the nearby TV from the list.
- Enter the code shown on the TV screen.
- Tap Pair.
Google documents playback control, power, Assistant, volume, and text entry as phone-remote functions. Google’s help page does not state that every function works on every TV model, so test the features you rely on after pairing.

Pairing or setting up without the remote
Initial device setup requires a Google Account and a network connection. Google’s setup instructions say the physical remote can be paired by holding Back and Home. If phone-based onboarding does not work, or you do not want to use it, you can complete setup through the TV’s own menus.

Google’s pages do not compare speed, reliability, or battery life between these two options, so this article does not rank them on those points.
Google’s help pages for the TV-control feature and the Google TV app are the primary references for setup steps and device eligibility. Check them before you rely on a specific model, since product support changes over time.
