You probably don’t need a bootable USB drive for every Windows problem—or to use Linux tools on a Windows PC. It still matters when a computer will not start, when you need to install an operating system directly on hardware, or when you want recovery media ready for a major failure. The deciding questions are whether the PC boots, whether you need a repair or a clean install, and whether the operating system must run on the hardware itself.

When is a bootable USB still useful?

A bootable USB starts a computer from external media instead of its internal drive. That gives you an installation or recovery route when Windows cannot start, or when you want to install an operating system directly on a PC.

  • The PC will not start: Windows installation media can provide a route to reinstall Windows if the computer will not boot and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc. Microsoft’s instructions are at Reinstall Windows with the installation media.
  • You want a fresh Windows installation: Installation media can support a clean install, but it removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up first and make sure the Windows edition matches the device’s license.
  • You need the manufacturer’s recovery image: A PC maker’s recovery media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory apps that generic Microsoft installation media does not.
  • You want Linux on the hardware: A bootable USB is the documented route for bare-metal Linux installation. It is also commonly used to start a live Linux environment without installing it, though the distribution’s own instructions should guide you.

These are fallback and installation tools, not routine maintenance. If your computer boots and the problem is limited, try a recovery option suited to that problem before reaching for installation media.

What to try before reinstalling Windows

Windows has several recovery routes that may avoid starting from USB. Their availability and effects depend on Windows version and device configuration, so check Microsoft’s current instructions for the option you plan to use: Recovery options in Windows.

  • Uninstall an update: Consider this if trouble began after a recent update. Microsoft describes it as an option that can leave personal files in place.
  • System Restore: Use a restore point to roll back system changes; Microsoft says this can leave personal files in place.
  • Reset this PC: Windows lets you choose whether to keep personal files, but review the current prompts and consequences before proceeding.
  • Reinstall using Windows Update: This is another available recovery route in supported circumstances; confirm its requirements and effects in the live Windows guidance.
  • Quick machine recovery: On eligible Windows 11 version 24H2-or-later devices with the feature enabled, Windows can detect repeated boot failures and try to obtain a fix through Windows Update. Microsoft says it is enabled by default on Home; Pro and Enterprise may require an administrator to enable it.

Online recovery depends on network access. If the PC cannot reach the internet, or a recovery route does not resolve the issue, external media may be the more practical option.

Which option fits your situation?

Situation USB media’s role What to check first
Windows starts, but a recent change caused a problem Often unnecessary as the first step Try the relevant recovery route, such as update removal or System Restore, and verify what it changes.
The PC will not start and built-in recovery is not enough Installation media or a previously created recovery drive can provide an external route Use a working PC to create media; check the Windows edition, license, backup, and device boot instructions.
The system drive failed or was replaced A Recovery Drive can restore system files and manufacturer customizations on the device for which it was created Keep personal files backed up separately; Recovery Drive media does not contain them.
You need Linux command-line tools or development tools within Windows A physical installer may not be needed Consider Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) or a virtual machine, which run Linux without installing it directly on the PC hardware.
You want Linux to run directly on the hardware, or want a dual-boot setup A bootable USB is the documented bare-metal installation route Check the Linux distribution’s instructions, hardware compatibility, and BitLocker recovery key before changing boot settings.

A recovery USB is not a backup

Windows Recovery Drive media is intended to restore system files and, where included, manufacturer customizations. Microsoft says it excludes personal files and erases the USB drive selected during creation. Confirm the target drive before proceeding, and keep a separate backup of documents, photos, and other data you cannot replace. Microsoft recommends recreating the Recovery Drive annually because the media reflects the system files and customizations present when it was made. Details: Create a recovery drive.

What you need to know before making installation media

Follow the instructions for the operating system and tool you intend to use; there is no universal USB size or format that applies to every workflow. Microsoft’s bare-metal Linux guidance says its typical USB workflow needs at least 16 GB, while Microsoft’s manual Windows flash-drive deployment page specifies at least 5 GB of free space for that particular procedure. Those figures describe different workflows, not a general recommendation for all ISOs or media-creation tools.

Creating recovery media can erase the selected USB, and some installation workflows format it. Read the tool’s prompts carefully and verify the drive before confirming. For Linux bare-metal or dual-boot setup, Microsoft also advises retrieving and storing the BitLocker recovery key before changing boot or disk configuration. See How to download and install Linux and the workflow-specific Install Windows from a Flash Drive.

The practical answer

If your PC still boots, start with the recovery option that matches the problem. If it will not start, if you need a clean installation, or if you want Linux to run directly on the hardware, a bootable USB remains a useful tool. For a major failure, keep recovery media and a separate personal-file backup; they solve different problems.
