A signed offer letter can still be part of a fake hiring scheme. Do not treat a logo, signature, or polished document as proof that the opening or recruiter is real. Pause before paying, depositing a check, or sharing sensitive information, then verify the role using contact details you find independently on the employer’s official website.
How to tell whether a signed job offer is real
The offer alone cannot confirm that a job exists. Scammers may impersonate employers, use official-looking documents, and contact applicants through personal email accounts. An email from a corporate-looking address is not conclusive either. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies premature requests for sensitive information and demands that applicants pay for equipment or training as warning signs. FTC guidance on job scams explains these tactics.
Verify the specific vacancy and the recruiter through a channel you locate yourself. The FTC advises: “Contact the company using a phone number or website you know to be legitimate — not one you got from the ‘recruiter.’” Use the employer’s official careers page or main contact details, and ask whether the role and the person who contacted you are genuine. You can also search the company or recruiter’s name alongside terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint,” but no search results do not prove the offer is legitimate. If you have not accepted, paid, or shared information
- Pause communication through any contact details or links the recruiter supplied.
- Find the employer’s official website independently and check its careers page or contact its main office to confirm the opening and recruiter.
- Do not pay for a job, equipment, or training, and do not provide Social Security, driver’s-license, or bank-account details until you have verified the employer and reached a genuine hiring process.
The FTC says honest employers will not ask applicants to pay to get a job. A request to pay for equipment or training—particularly by cash or a payment app—can be part of an advance-payment scam. Read the FTC’s explanation of job-offer scams.

If you sent money
- Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, or transfer service using its official contact channel. Ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed.
- Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Whether money can be recovered depends on the payment method and timing; reporting does not guarantee a refund.
If you deposited a check or sent money onward
Contact your bank promptly, explain that the check may be fraudulent, and do not send more money or spend any funds that appear to have come from it. In a fake-check scheme, a deposited check can look available before the bank confirms it is genuine. If it later bounces, you may be responsible for the money you sent or spent. If you shared identity or financial information
For a Social Security number or other identity details, use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps. They include getting a recovery plan and guidance on checking credit reports and considering a fraud alert or credit freeze. If you shared bank-account or other financial-account details, contact the affected institution directly through its official channel.

If you received a suspicious message

Why a fake offer can be costly
In an April 2023 report, the FTC said people who reported a job scam in 2022 had a median reported loss of $2,000; across all fraud types, the median reported loss that year was $650.
