The hedgehog-inspired i Gel was a proposed full-body airbag concept, not a proven or commercially available safety suit. A 2015 report described airbags that would inflate around a wearer and curl their body into a protective ball, but it did not establish that the system was tested, certified, or later brought to market.
How the proposed i Gel airbag was meant to work
German trauma surgeon Dr. Wolfgang Müller-Adam presented the concept at the Wearable Technologies Conference in Munich, according to New Atlas’s February 10, 2015 report. The hedgehog analogy referred to a defensive curl: on detecting forces associated with a crash, sensors would trigger airbags and push the wearer’s torso and lower body into a fetal-style ball.
The reported design called for as many as 20 nitrogen-activated airbags distributed around the head, torso, and lower body. That number describes the proposed design, not a tested safety result. The report did not provide measured injury reduction or other evidence that the cocoon would protect a wearer in a crash.
Why it remained a concept in the available reporting
The 2015 article characterized i Gel as a rough concept seeking research and financial partners. It said the project still needed a suitable lightweight, durable airbag material and an electro-actuated inflation system. Those are central engineering requirements for a wearable system: it would need to detect the relevant event, inflate reliably, and provide its intended coverage without creating other hazards.

The report relayed the project lead’s estimates at the time: one to two years for a simple, low-speed system and three to four years for a more technical motorcycle version. These were forecasts, not evidence that either version was completed. A Pacific Northwest National Laboratory technology alert from February 2015 listed the concept’s status as “Evolving.” The cited sources do not establish whether i Gel later advanced, stopped, or reached the market.
Did the i Gel suit become available?
The available reporting identifies i Gel as a concept presented in 2015; it does not establish a retail product, a completed prototype, certification, or tested performance. Therefore, there is no basis in these sources to treat i Gel as a purchasable full-body airbag suit or to rely on its proposed cocoon as proven crash protection.

What wearable airbag products exist instead?
Wearable motorcycle airbags are a real, separate category, but they are not evidence that i Gel’s whole-body design exists. Their coverage and features vary by product. For example, Mugen Denko’s hit-air motorcycle range includes vests and jackets, with model-specific coverage and certifications described in its product lineup. In&motion describes motorcycle airbag technology integrated into products distributed through partner brands.

- Intended activity and coverage: Identify which parts of the body that particular model is designed to cover.
- Activation: Confirm how the system detects an incident and triggers inflation.
- Certification: Look for certification details for the exact model; do not infer certification from a brand or product family.
- Compatibility and upkeep: Check what motorcycle gear or setup it works with and what maintenance or post-deployment steps the manufacturer specifies.
These products are narrower adjacent options for motorcycle protection; the cited sources do not show that any reproduces i Gel’s proposed full-body cocoon.

The manufacturer says it should be used alongside an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe, and stresses that training is essential and an airbag does not replace the rescue kit.
