The checkmarks were easy to earn, and that was the problem. Over three days I collected twenty of them, and when I looked back at the list, most no longer described what I had actually done. The record looked like progress. The behavior underneath it had quietly stopped matching the record.

This essay is about that gap: between a visible mark and the activity it is supposed to stand for. It is not a claim that apps make people dishonest, and it is not a verdict on checkmarks in general. Some of the evidence below comes from controlled studies, and some of it comes from my own experience, which I describe as my own experience and nothing more.

Why a checkmark feels like progress

A checkmark closes a loop. It takes a second to tap, it turns a vague intention into a finished item, and it stays on the screen where you can see it. A streak counter adds a second layer: now the mark is not only a record of today but a record of not having broken the chain. Both features make the mark feel like evidence, even when nothing about the underlying task has been verified.

The first days of a new tracker are the easiest. The marks are cheap, the list is short, and every mark feels like a small win. That early momentum is real, and it is the reason trackers are worth trying. It is also the period when the habit of marking gets established, sometimes before the habit the mark was meant to track.

How a task drifts away from its checkbox

Most tracked habits begin with a purpose and end with a definition. The purpose is something like “understand this chapter” or “drink enough water.” The checkbox definition is much narrower: “open the book app,” or “log a glass.” The distance between those two is where the record starts to lie, usually without any deliberate intent.

In my own case the drift happened in three stages:

  • The purpose stayed vague. I knew what I wanted the habit to do for me, but I never wrote it down in a form I could check.
  • The checkbox got a definition by default. Whatever the app counted as done became the working definition, because nothing else was on the screen.
  • The gap went unnoticed. Each mark seemed reasonable on its own. Only the pattern across several days showed that the marks no longer corresponded to the purpose.

None of this required lying in the everyday sense. It required only that the mark be easier to produce than the behavior, and that nobody, including me, was checking the two against each other.

What controlled studies show about streaks and visible progress

Four studies are useful here. They test different things, in different settings, with different outcome measures. Read them as separate findings, not as a single answer to whether progress displays work.

Study Setting and sample What was measured What it found
Barasch and Silverman, Journal of Consumer Research (summarized by INSEAD Knowledge, 22 June 2022) Seven experiments with more than 4,000 participants; some settings simulated app use Whether a highlighted intact or broken logged streak changed later choices Participants were more likely to continue a behavior when an intact streak was highlighted; in one exercise-choice experiment, 66.23 percent with an intact streak and 57.86 percent with a broken streak chose another exercise of the same type
van den Broek and colleagues, Utrecht University Research Portal (April 2026) 166 adults practicing foreign-language vocabulary Self-reported motivation, learning behavior, and delayed recall Points and progress bars improved several self-reported motivation measures; learning behavior and delayed recall did not improve
“Gamification of Behavior Change,” indexed by PubMed (2024) 40-day water-drinking field experiment; experimental group n=43, active control n=48, passive control n=51 Desired-behavior enactments, habit-index change, and behavior frequency after the intervention Mean enactments during the intervention were 14.71 (SD 6.57) in the optimized-gamification group and 11.64 in each control group; no between-group difference in habit-index change, and no behavior-frequency advantage after the intervention
Kim and colleagues, Microsoft Research and ACM (2016) Eight-week TimeAware deployment, N=24, using a computer-use monitoring system Personal productivity under positive and negative feedback framing Only the negative-framing condition improved productivity in this study

Streaks can change what people choose next

The streak paper is the one most directly relevant to my experience. Its authors found that people were more likely to keep going when an intact streak was highlighted than when a broken one was. In the exercise-choice example, the difference was about eight percentage points: 66.23 percent of participants with an intact streak chose another exercise of the same type, compared with 57.86 percent of those with a broken streak. That is one experiment’s result, not a universal rate. It does show that a streak display can shape the next decision, not only record the last one.

The study does not show that a checkmark makes anyone misreport. What it shows is that the way a log presents past behavior can change future behavior in the studied settings.

Points and progress bars can change how a task feels

The vocabulary study separated two things that are easy to blur together. Points and progress bars improved how participants rated their own motivation. They did not improve the learning behavior the researchers measured, and they did not improve delayed recall. A task can feel more engaging while the outcome it is meant to produce stays flat.

For a tracker, the lesson is that a satisfying record and a useful behavior are not the same measurement. A display can make the first go up while the second does not move.

The effect depends on the time horizon

The water-drinking field experiment is the clearest warning about timing. During the 40-day intervention, participants in the optimized-gamification group recorded more desired-behavior enactments than the controls. But the habit-index change did not differ between groups, and the frequency advantage did not persist after the intervention ended. A tracker can raise activity while it is running and leave little behind when it stops.

Framing evidence is narrow

The TimeAware deployment found that only negative framing improved productivity, in a group of 24 people over eight weeks, using one monitoring system. That is too small and too specific to support a rule that negative feedback works best. The useful takeaway is narrower: how feedback is framed deserves attention, and a tracker’s tone is a design choice with consequences.

The moment the record stopped feeling credible

The turning point for me was not a dramatic failure. It was a small mismatch I noticed while scrolling back through the marks. Several checkmarks sat next to days when I had done nothing that matched the purpose I had originally written for the habit, if I had written one at all. Once I saw that, the whole list lost its weight. The green marks still looked the same, but I could no longer tell which ones meant something.

That loss of credibility is worth taking seriously. A tracker is useful only while its marks carry information. When the marks stop carrying information, the display keeps producing the feeling of progress, which is the part that makes it dangerous. You keep looking at the record, and the record keeps reassuring you about something it no longer measures.

A more honest way to decide what counts as done

  1. Write the purpose in one sentence before you start. Use a sentence that names the outcome you want, such as “I want to be able to explain the chapter without rereading it.” Avoid a sentence that only names the activity.
  2. Define observable completion criteria. Describe what you would be able to see or show if the task were done. For example: “I wrote three sentences summarizing the chapter from memory and checked them against the text.” If you cannot describe what you would see, the checkbox will define the task for you.
  3. Track the behavior, not the act of logging. The mark should follow the completion criteria, not the moment you open the app. If the criteria require a check, record the check; if they require an output, record the output.
  4. Decide in advance what a missed day means. Treat a broken streak as information: it tells you that the habit or the criteria need adjusting, not that you have failed. Ask whether the criteria were unrealistic, the timing was wrong, or the purpose has changed.
  5. Review on a longer window than a streak. A weekly look at whether the outcome is improving tells you more than a daily count of marks. The water-drinking study’s post-intervention results suggest that short-term activity can differ from lasting change.

If a separate paper log helps you keep the completion rule in view, a basic paper habit tracker journal can serve that purpose. None of these studies tested paper tracking, so it should be seen as a practical choice rather than a proven fix for inaccurate records.

Questions to ask about any progress tracker

Whether you use a habit app, a spreadsheet, or a notebook, these questions help separate a useful record from a decorative one:

  • Does the tool define what completion means, or does it leave that to you?
  • Does it record the useful behavior, or only the act of checking in?
  • Does a missed day erase your progress, or does it preserve a longer view?
  • Does the feedback encourage meaningful effort, or does it pressure you to protect a streak at any cost?

Answering these questions does not require ranking products. It requires looking at the record and asking what it actually measures. The twenty checkmarks I gave myself measured my willingness to tap a button. The habit I cared about needed a different measurement, and writing that measurement down before the next checkmark was the first honest step I took.
