The available evidence does not establish that this specific experiment happened, what code was submitted, or what ChatGPT returned. So this article cannot honestly claim a surprising result from a firsthand test. The real issue a developer should check is what happens to uploaded source files: training, chat history, file storage, and deletion are separate controls, and the rules depend on whether you used a personal account or a managed workspace.

What the title can—and cannot—claim

OpenAI’s product documentation explains account controls and retention practices; it does not verify that a particular person uploaded an entire repository or establish what an individual ChatGPT response proves about storage or model training. Without records of the account, workflow, submitted files, and output, a first-person claim about the experiment or its results would be unsupported.

That distinction matters if you are deciding what to do with your own code. A model response is not evidence that your files were or were not retained, used for model improvement, or exposed to anyone else. Those questions concern the product settings and workspace policy in effect when you submitted the files.

First identify the account and workflow

Before interpreting the relevant controls, establish whether you used a personal ChatGPT account, a managed workspace such as Business or Enterprise, or the API. Also note whether the conversation was temporary or regular. These are not interchangeable privacy contexts: organization policies can affect managed workspaces, and the API has its own applicable terms and controls.

  • Personal account: Check the model-improvement setting and whether the conversation was temporary.
  • Managed workspace: OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API data are not used to train models by default. Workspace administrators may set retention and access policies, so follow your organization’s rules rather than assuming a personal setting applies.
  • Uncertain workflow: Check the account or workspace in which the chat appears, and review its applicable controls before relying on a general description.

OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT documentation describes personal-account controls. Its business privacy information describes the default training treatment for business products and API data.

Model improvement is separate from chat history

For personal ChatGPT accounts, turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models. OpenAI states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” Turning it off does not, by itself, remove chats from history; deleting a conversation is a separate action. The setting describes model improvement, not every kind of storage or processing.

To review the control, open Settings → Data Controls and check Improve the model for everyone. The labels and available controls can change, so consult the current Data controls in ChatGPT instructions if your interface differs. Workspace or account controls may also affect what you can change.

Temporary Chat is not the same as deletion

A Temporary Chat is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary, and it does not appear in chat history. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save the temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows the regular account or workspace settings. Temporary status therefore changes history and model-improvement treatment; it is not a promise of immediate erasure.

See OpenAI’s current Temporary chat in ChatGPT guidance for how to start or manage one.

Uploaded files may outlive the conversation

Where ChatGPT Library is available, uploaded files can be saved separately from the conversation. Deleting the chat does not delete a file that remains in Library. If you want to remove an upload, inspect Library and delete the saved file as well as the conversation, when applicable. OpenAI describes this distinction in its Chat and File Retention Policies and Library guidance.

Deletion is scheduled, not immediate

OpenAI says deleted chats and files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. That is a policy timeframe, not an instant-erasure guarantee: exceptions apply to content already de-identified and disassociated from a user, or where security or legal obligations require longer retention. The same deletion qualification applies when you remove a Library file.

For an uploaded repository, the practical cleanup is to delete the relevant conversation and separately remove any file saved in Library. The retention documentation explains the schedule and exceptions; it does not establish what happened to a specific upload in an individual account.

Before submitting a repository

“Full codebase” can mean very different things: a repository may contain source files, configuration, build output, test fixtures, customer data, or secrets. Before uploading, determine what is actually included and whether your organization permits the workflow.

  • Check for credentials, API keys, private keys, tokens, customer records, or other sensitive data; do not submit material you are not authorized to share.
  • Identify the account, plan, workspace policy, and chat type you will use.
  • For a personal account, decide whether the model-improvement control is appropriate; remember that it does not control chat history.
  • If a file is already uploaded and you want it removed, check both the chat and Library, then account for the documented deletion schedule and exceptions.

These checks address data handling, not whether ChatGPT will find bugs or produce a correct analysis. The product-policy documents do not establish a particular security outcome or coding result for any repository.
