A week-long comparison can only support a real-world verdict when the exact vehicles, route, and observations are known. Those details—and the driver’s notes on comfort, handling, cabin noise, and fuel use—aren’t available here, so it would be misleading to invent which SUV felt better. What can be compared reliably is the current U.S. model context: the 2026 RAV4 is offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while the redesigned 2026 CX-5 launches with a gasoline engine and standard all-wheel drive.
Why the exact test vehicles matter
“RAV4” does not identify one powertrain. Toyota’s 2026 U.S. lineup includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, and output and fuel-economy figures vary with drivetrain and grade. Mazda’s U.S. 2026 CX-5 launch configuration is more clearly defined: a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive.
Without the RAV4’s trim and powertrain, the two vehicles cannot be treated as a fully specified, apples-to-apples test. Nor are the CX-5’s trim, route, weather, passenger or cargo load, and driving mix identified. Those omissions prevent a defensible claim about how either SUV performed over a week.

Published fuel-economy figures are not test-week results
Toyota reports a maximum estimate of 47/40/43 mpg city/highway/combined for a 2026 RAV4 hybrid in a front-wheel-drive configuration. Mazda lists 24/30/26 mpg city/highway/combined for the 2026 CX-5. These are published U.S. manufacturer figures, not fuel consumption measured during the week described in the title. The RAV4 figure is specifically for a hybrid FWD configuration; it should not be applied to every RAV4 grade or drivetrain. Powertrains and specifications to use as context
Toyota reports 226 net combined horsepower for the 2026 RAV4 hybrid with front-wheel drive and 236 net combined horsepower with all-wheel drive. AWD fuel-economy estimates vary by grade, with lower figures for Woodland than for some other configurations. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent findings about acceleration or driving feel.
Mazda lists 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque for the CX-5’s 2.5-liter gasoline engine, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD. Mazda has said a CX-5 hybrid powertrain is planned for launch in 2027; that is a stated plan, not a guarantee of future availability. Mazda’s U.S. model page contains its current specifications.

What the CX-5’s announced U.S. prices do—and don’t—show
Mazda North American Operations announced 2026 CX-5 starting MSRPs from $29,990 for the 2.5 S to $38,990 for the 2.5 S Premium Plus. The announcement lists a $1,595 destination and handling charge, or $1,640 in Alaska, and excludes taxes, title, and other fees. Dealers set actual sale prices, so starting MSRP is not a transaction-price estimate. Because the test trims are not identified, these figures cannot establish a trim-equivalent price comparison with a RAV4. Mazda North American Operations’ announcement gives the pricing qualifications.

What remains unanswered about a week behind the wheel
Published specifications cannot replace the observations needed for a road-test conclusion. No documented notes establish which SUV had the more comfortable seats, quieter cabin, easier controls, better visibility, or preferable ride and handling. No actual trip fuel economy is available either. Any such verdict would require identifying each test vehicle and recording the driving conditions alongside the impressions.

Equipment and cargo details also depend on trim. Mazda’s trim information describes cargo-volume measures and available features, but equipment should not be assumed for an unspecified U.S. test vehicle; some site imagery is European-market. Check the exact U.S. grade before treating an advertised feature as fitted to a vehicle. Mazda’s CX-5 page is the relevant source for its model and trim information.

Toyota’s May 8, 2026 U.S. announcement says ToyotaCare covers normal factory-scheduled maintenance for one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first, and roadside assistance for two years with unlimited mileage. That describes Toyota’s plan; the available information does not establish matched Mazda coverage terms, so it is not enough to claim one vehicle has better coverage. Toyota’s announcement also lists a 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty and hybrid component and battery coverage. Toyota USA Newsroom is the source for these U.S. coverage details.
