A ZDNET reviewer who expected a compact mini PC to struggle with local AI coding work reports the opposite. On the VZmore AX9 Max Mini PC, running the qwen3-coder:30b model through Ollama, he generated about 1,500 lines of code for a web app while the machine stayed usable. The app still needed database fixes before it ran, and the result comes from one author’s setup rather than a controlled benchmark. Jack Wallen’s verdict on his own expectations was blunt: “I was wrong. Very wrong.”
What the reviewer actually tested
The test had one concrete goal: ask a local coding model to build a usable application. Wallen asked the model for a web app for entering theatrical costume measurements, saving those measurements to a database, and letting users sign in. Nothing about the task was synthetic, which is why it is more informative than a token-speed chart, but it is still a single run described in one article.
How the setup was built
The workflow Wallen describes can be reproduced in outline. Treat the steps as the sequence he reports, not as a tested installation guide for your hardware.

The reviewer did not keep the factory operating system for this test.
- Install the Moose front end. Moose was the interface he used to work with the model.
- Install Ollama and use it to download the model.

He also configured Ollama to accept connections from other machines on his local network. That configuration is covered in its own section below.

Price and configuration to confirm before buying
The $1,499 price was the figure at the time of the article. Current price, stock, and seller configuration were not verified for this piece, so check the exact model listing before comparing it with other machines. The reviewed unit had 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD. If you plan to upgrade, the article’s expansion claims depend on DDR5 SO-DIMM memory and M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSDs. Check module dimensions, supported capacity, and the system’s own requirements before purchasing any part.

Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) the core-count is effectively doubled, to 32 threads. Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 64 MB of L3 cache and can boost up to 5.1 GHz, depending on the workload. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is currently rated as the "most powerful x86 APU" on the market for AI computing.
- AI NPU with XDNA 2 ARCHITECTURE - Powered by 16 “Zen 5” CPU cores, 50+ peak AI TOPS XDNA 2 NPU and a truly massive integrated GPU driven by 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 CUs, the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 is a transformative upgrade and delivers a significant performance boost over the competition. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 excels in consumer AI workloads like the llama.cpp-powered application: LM Studio. Shaping up to be the must-have app for client LLM workloads, LM Studio allows users to locally run the latest language model without any technical knowledge required and unleash their creativity and productivity.
- AMD RADEON 8090S iGPU GAMING PC - The AMD Radeon RX 8060S offers all 40 CUs with up to 2.9 GHz graphics clock and uses the new RDNA 3.5 architecture. The powerful iGPU is positioned between an RTX 4060 and 4070 laptop GPU and therefore enables gaming in FHD at maximum details in most demanding games. The 8060S can also utilize the full 128GB pool, which is perfect for running LLMs such as Deepseek 70B Q8, which runs comfortably on this machine.
- EIGHT CHANNEL LPDDR5X - LPDDR5X is a new ground breaking memory small form factor installed on-board. With blazing speeds up to to 8000MT/s, it runs 1.5x faster than the DDR5 SODIMMs; 90% better performance over DDR5 SODIMMs in video conferencing and photo editing; 30% better performance in productivity apps; 12% better performance in digital content workloads.
- QUAD SCREEN 8K DISPLAY SUPPORT - EVO-X2 AI Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and dual USB 4 40Gbps Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Running the model for other machines on your network
Wallen also tested the mini PC as a shared model server on his LAN. Requests from other machines were slower than running the model directly on the mini PC. In his subjective comparison, they still felt faster than the same remote setup on his System76 desktop. The article gives no measured latency, token rate, repeat trials, or controlled comparison, so treat the speed comparison as an impression rather than a measurement.
Which tools and models the article says are supported
The article says the system supports compatible Qwen, Llama, Gemma, and DeepSeek models through tools including LM Studio, Ollama, and AMD GAIA. The author attributes part of the experience to the processor’s NPU and AMD XDNA 2 architecture. Compatibility depends on software versions, model size, quantization, drivers, and runtime configuration. The article does not document a systematic matrix covering those variables, so a model that runs for one reader may behave differently on another setup.

What this test does and does not show
- It shows that one reviewer, on one configuration, got a multi-file-sized coding task from a local model on a compact machine, with the system remaining usable during generation.
- It does not show that the PC will handle every local model or workload. Model size, quantization, and runtime settings all change the result.
- It does not show a measured generation speed, sustained performance curve, or noise level under load for the coding task.
- It does not show that generated code works without review. The database commands needed correction.
- It does not compare the VZmore AX9 Max Mini PC with other mini PCs. Any shortlist needs separately verified products and evidence.
Checklist before you buy a mini PC for local AI
- Confirm the exact configuration you are buying, including memory, storage, and whether the listed upgrade paths apply to that unit.
- Check the current price and seller, because the article’s $1,499 figure is dated.
- Decide which models you need and their size and quantization, then test those on the machine or on a comparable setup.
- Verify that your chosen runtime (Ollama, LM Studio, or AMD GAIA) supports the hardware and model you plan to use.
- Measure generation speed and noise under your own workload rather than relying on peak TOPS figures.
