Yes, you can use Brave for YouTube and keep YouTube Premium. Brave offers browser-side features such as ad blocking and background playback, but it does not duplicate Premium’s full package: offline downloads in YouTube apps, YouTube Music Premium, supported-app benefits, and a documented way to support creators through membership fees remain distinct reasons to keep subscribing. Calling YouTube’s app “bloated” is a personal judgment, not a performance finding; the practical case for switching is that you can prefer Brave for watching while retaining benefits that only make sense as part of the membership.
Can I use Brave for YouTube and keep Premium?
Yes. Brave is a browser; YouTube Premium is an account membership. You can sign in to YouTube in Brave and continue paying for Premium. YouTube also documents background playback in mobile browsers for Premium members, subject to restrictions, so the two are not mutually exclusive. The exact behavior can vary by device, browser, and YouTube updates.
Brave describes YouTube ad blocking, picture-in-picture, and background playback features in its browser. Its article says the improvements apply to Brave version 1.87 and later; these are Brave’s product claims, not the result of an independent comparison. See Brave’s YouTube ad-blocking, PiP, and background-play description and its broader YouTube feature overview.

No—not if you use the full set of membership benefits. The overlap is strongest for watching YouTube in a browser, where Brave says it can block YouTube ads and support background playback. Premium covers benefits across supported YouTube apps and devices, and includes app-specific features that a browser does not provide as a like-for-like replacement.

What do I still get with YouTube Premium?
Ad-free viewing in supported YouTube apps and devices
YouTube says Premium removes ads served by YouTube across supported platforms. That does not erase sponsorship segments, product placements, or promotions a creator has put directly into a video.

Downloads in YouTube apps
Premium downloads work through YouTube and YouTube Music apps, rather than creating a general-purpose video file for Brave or another player. Availability depends on the content and location. Downloads are tied to the signed-in account and app; YouTube says offline access may require periodic reconnection, and a video that has become unavailable can be removed on a subsequent sync.
YouTube Music Premium and other supported-app benefits
The subscription includes YouTube Music Premium and benefits in supported YouTube apps, including YouTube Kids where available. If you use those apps or listen to music through YouTube Music, changing your video-watching browser does not remove the distinction between browser features and membership benefits.

A contribution to creators
YouTube says membership fees are shared with creators, with more viewing of a creator contributing more to that creator. The help page gives no fixed amount or percentage, so the useful point is simply that retaining Premium keeps this documented support mechanism in place.
What Brave features can cover—and where they stop
Ad blocking and picture-in-picture
Brave describes ad blocking and picture-in-picture for YouTube in its browser. YouTube-served ads and creator-read sponsorships are different things: a browser feature may affect the former, but it does not remove a promotion recorded or inserted into the video itself. Brave’s feature documentation applies to version 1.87 and later for the improvements it describes; site and browser behavior can change over time.

Background playback depends on the platform
Brave lists background play with lock-screen controls as a YouTube-related feature. That is not a promise that every YouTube action or playback mode works identically across Brave installations. Premium’s own mobile-app background playback is documented for signed-in members in YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids where available; Shorts are excluded. YouTube separately documents mobile-browser background playback for Premium with restrictions.

Playlist is not a universal YouTube download substitute
Brave Playlist can collect compatible media, play it in the background, and store it for offline playback, but its availability is narrower than “Brave on every device.” Brave Help describes Playlist as available on iOS and desktop Nightly. Brave’s product page specifies iOS 15 or later for iPhone and iPad and says DRM-protected media is unsupported. Playlist items cannot be exported to another device. Check Brave’s current Playlist help page and Playlist product details for platform and compatibility information.

What about Premium Lite?
Premium Lite is a narrower membership, not another name for full Premium. YouTube’s current help page describes it as available only in listed locations. Ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and during search or browsing. Downloads and background playback apply to most videos, with exclusions for Shorts and specified music-related content. Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium and omits other full-Premium benefits. Because availability and plan details are location-dependent, check YouTube’s Premium Lite membership page for your region rather than assuming it is offered everywhere.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether to keep the subscription
- Keep full Premium if you rely on YouTube Music Premium, app-based downloads, ad removal across supported YouTube apps and devices, or the creator-support mechanism YouTube describes.
- Consider whether a narrower plan fits if most of your use is browser viewing and the Lite plan is available where you live, but first check its remaining-ad contexts and feature exclusions.
- Use Brave without expecting a full replacement if your main preference is its browser experience and its documented YouTube features meet your needs. Keep in mind that Playlist has specific platform and media restrictions.
