Switching from Chrome to Brave can feel like giving up less than expected while getting more ad and tracker blocking by default. That was the appeal behind the “compromise” in my title: Brave and Chrome share Chromium on desktop and Android, but Brave layers in its own privacy controls. That does not prove Brave is universally faster or more private, and it does not make every site or extension work exactly the same.
What changed when I switched from Chrome to Brave?
The most noticeable difference is the default balance. Chrome is a familiar Chromium-based browser; Brave adds Shields, which Brave says blocks third-party ads and trackers by default. The result can be a cleaner browsing experience without first installing an extension. Brave describes these benefits on its Chrome comparison page and privacy features page; those are vendor descriptions, not independent test results.
That change is not the same as eliminating every ad, tracker, or third-party connection. Brave’s optional ad ecosystem is separate from the third-party ads Shields blocks, and Brave says its browser may display Brave Ads even when Rewards is disabled. Its policy describes on-device ad matching and aggregated reporting; these are Brave’s claims, not an independent audit. See the Brave FAQ and browser privacy policy.
What carries over from Chrome—and what might not?
On desktop and Android, both browsers use Chromium, so familiar browser basics and many site-compatibility expectations carry over. Brave says Chrome extensions generally work in Brave, but compatibility can vary by extension, version, and platform. Both browsers use WebKit on iOS, according to Brave’s comparison page.

Extensions are not a permanent guarantee
Brave says its native Shields blocking does not depend on Chrome extension Manifest V2 or V3. Some Manifest V2 extensions, including uBlock Origin, are supported on a best-effort basis, and Brave says that support may change with upstream changes or extension authors. If a particular extension is essential, check whether it is currently available and works in your Brave version before relying on it. Details are in Brave’s Manifest V3 explanation.
Does Brave’s blocking ever break websites?
It can. Brave lets users change Shields settings globally or for an individual site. Its FAQ says aggressive blocking can also block first-party ads and may interfere with site functionality. If a page’s login, video, checkout, or embedded content stops working, try reducing Shields for that site rather than disabling protection everywhere; the trade-off is that the site may load more advertising or tracking elements.

What happens to sync when you leave Chrome?
Brave Sync is not simply a copy of account-based sync. Brave says synced data is encrypted on the client side and stored in an encrypted file, with the decryption key kept on users’ devices. The company says it cannot recover synced files if the user loses access to the relevant device or key. Unused Sync chains expire after 12 months, according to Brave’s browser privacy policy.
That design means the recovery burden is yours: keep access to your synced device or key, and do not assume Brave can restore the data if both are lost. It is a meaningful privacy-and-recovery trade-off for anyone accustomed to signing into an account to retrieve browser data.

Is Brave private if it still uses Google services?
Brave’s privacy protections do not mean it makes no third-party requests. Its policy describes Safe Browsing behavior that differs by platform: desktop requests are proxied to avoid sharing the IP address with Google; on Android, operating-system Safe Browsing functionality can send requests to Google that expose the device IP; on iOS, Safari functionality is used, with Google and Tencent services depending on region and Apple proxying requests. These details are from Brave’s policy, updated September 23, 2026. For the platform you use, read the current policy rather than treating “private” as “no outside services involved.”
Private windows also are not anonymity mode or a substitute for tracker protection: Brave says they do not prevent tracking by sites you visit. Its Tor private window routes through intermediaries and can make browsing slower, according to Brave’s comparison page.

Is Brave faster than Chrome?
I can describe a faster-feeling experience as my own impression, but it is not evidence that Brave is faster for everyone. Brave says blocking can reduce resource use and improve performance, but the sources available here do not establish an independent, current, controlled Chrome-versus-Brave speed or battery comparison. Actual results can depend on your device, browser versions, sites, extensions, and settings. If speed is the deciding factor, compare both browsers on the same device with your usual tabs and extensions rather than relying on a general promise.
