Valor Mortis has made me reconsider whether a first-person camera can support a Soulslike. Its announced design brings stamina, parries, melee and ranged weapons, and supernatural abilities together with exploration built around movement. That combination is a convincing answer to the question on paper—but it is not yet proof of how well the game plays. As of October 5, 2026, Valor Mortis is still unreleased, with launch scheduled for October 13.
Why the first-person perspective gave me pause
Soulslikes often ask players to read an enemy’s stance, keep track of nearby threats, and choose when to attack, dodge, or parry. A third-person camera can show more of the character and the space around them. In first person, those same encounters could feel harder to read. That concern is why Valor Mortis’s premise initially sounded like a difficult fit.
What changed my mind is the design the studio has described: a visible emphasis on stamina and parrying, weapons with distinct roles, and left-hand abilities that also support movement. Those systems give the first-person format more to do than simply put the camera closer to a sword fight.
What Valor Mortis is
Made by One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike set in a supernatural, plague-ravaged version of 19th-century Europe. You play William Dowsett, a soldier in Napoleon’s Grande Armée who has been resurrected and wields period weapons alongside supernatural powers. The setting turns Napoleon’s eastward campaign into alternate history, with a plague following conquest.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
The publisher’s August 2026 announcement introduces rebel leader the Shrike, soldier James Stewart, and Polish craftsman Lucjan Skawiński. It frames William’s story around whom he trusts: the survivors and the Shrike, or the Emperor. That premise gives the combat and exploration a specific historical-horror identity rather than a generic medieval fantasy backdrop.
How the announced combat makes the camera feel plausible
Stamina, parries, and weapon choice
The publisher describes skill- and stamina-based combat built around parries, dodges, counterattacks, and high mobility. Its September gameplay overview names the Claymore, a slow, high-impact two-handed blade, and the Musket, a two-handed ranged firearm. The intended rhythm is to choose an approach suited to the enemy rather than rely on one universal attack.

- Solitaire Play
- 22 x34 Map
- 300+ Counters
- Unit Size: 1 Plane
That matters in first person because the combat’s identity can come from timing and deliberate weapon decisions, not only from watching a character’s animations from outside. Still, the descriptions establish design intent, not whether attack cues are readable, parries feel fair, or weapon matching stays satisfying over a full game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTransmutations add a second layer
William’s left-hand Transmutations are presented as both combat tools and ways to interact with the environment:
- Fire burns enemies.
- Shield absorbs damage and releases a shockwave.
- Grapple pulls William toward designated points in the environment.
These abilities make the first-person perspective more than a close-up view of conventional melee. A grapple can connect movement to exploration, while Fire and Shield add choices during a fight. Whether switching between weapons, stamina management, and these abilities feels intuitive is something only hands-on play can settle.
Exploration and progression beyond combat
The publisher describes interconnected, Metroidvania-style areas, environmental secrets, and mobility tools. Grapple points are one example of how an ability could help open up movement through those spaces; the announcements do not establish how large or complex the world is.
Rank #4
Progression is organized around Lanterns. Catalysts are dropped where William dies and can be spent at Lanterns to improve stats such as health, stamina, and parry. Ambers found while exploring can also be equipped at Lanterns to personalize a build. These are announced systems, but their balance, variety, and long-term depth remain unverified.
How it compares with the usual Soulslike perspective
The useful comparison is not whether Valor Mortis is better than third-person Soulslikes, but what its perspective changes. A third-person camera generally offers a view of the player character as well as the immediate surroundings; Valor Mortis instead builds its pitch around first-person combat, ranged weapons, and supernatural abilities. Its announced mobility and connected exploration give the camera a role outside encounters, too.
Best Value
That is a coherent case for the format. It also leaves the central practical question unanswered: can players reliably judge enemy attacks and nearby danger while managing stamina and choosing between different tools? Publisher materials cannot establish that experience, so a personal verdict should be read as a reaction to the announced design—not a claim of proven critical or player consensus.

As of October 5, 2026, the publisher’s latest announcement schedules Valor Mortis for October 13, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and Steam, with day-one Xbox Game Pass availability. The same September 30 announcement listed the following prices and edition contents; they are dated announcements, so check the live storefront for current availability and pricing.
| Edition | Announced price | Announced contents |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $39.99, €39.99, or 149.99 zł | Game |
| Deluxe | $59.99, €59.99, or 199.99 zł | Game, a major story DLC planned for the following year, and several cosmetic packs |
A June 7 announcement had given September 24 as the release date and said a playable Steam demo was available at that time. The later October 13 date supersedes that schedule; the earlier announcement does not confirm that the demo remains available now.

What I can—and cannot—say about “proved me wrong”
The design has changed my expectation in a specific sense: first person does not rule out a Soulslike structure when combat is built around timing, stamina, different weapon ranges, and powers that also serve exploration. Valor Mortis has a plausible design answer to my initial skepticism.
But as of October 5, the game has not launched. The publisher’s previews describe intended mechanics; they do not verify combat feel, balance, performance, or whether the full experience delivers on those ideas. The strongest honest version of the verdict is therefore personal and provisional: the concept has won me over before release, while the finished game still has to prove it in play.
