If you are searching for a loose .inf file for this board, you are probably looking in the wrong place. MSI’s documented driver process for the PRO B550M-VC WIFI, the product name MSI uses for the board most people call the “MSI B550M VC WIFI,” is to download a driver package for your exact model and Windows version, extract it, and run the .exe installer inside. An .inf file may sit inside the extracted folder, but it is not the file MSI tells you to launch.

Confirm you have the right board

MSI lists this product as the PRO B550M-VC WIFI. Before you download anything, check that the box, the board, or your order record matches that name, because MSI sells several similarly named B550 boards with different onboard hardware. The product’s specification page lists the following components, which matter because each one has its own driver:

  • Chipset: AMD B550
  • Wired LAN: Realtek RTL8111GN or RTL8111HN 1Gbps controller (MSI’s page lists both variants)
  • Wireless: AMD Wi-Fi 6E module
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth 5.2

MSI’s specification page also notes that 6 GHz Wi-Fi availability depends on country regulations. That only affects you if your problem is specifically 6 GHz connectivity. Source: MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI specifications.

Why you may not see an .inf file

MSI’s motherboard driver guide, last updated November 20, 2024, does not describe the driver as a single .inf file. It describes a downloaded driver file that you decompress, followed by running the included .exe. Many manufacturer packages wrap the actual Windows driver files (which are usually .inf, .sys, and .cat files) inside that installer or inside a subfolder. The .inf is therefore often present, but you need to look inside the extracted folder rather than expect it at the top level of the download.

MSI’s guide does not list the contents of every current archive for this board, so do not assume a particular filename or folder layout. What you can rely on is the process itself.

Install the correct driver from MSI

  1. Open MSI’s support page for the board: MSI motherboard driver installation guide describes the steps, and the PRO B550M-VC WIFI model page leads to its Driver section.
  2. In the Driver section, choose the operating system version that matches the PC, such as Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit), and select the driver you need.
  3. Download the file to a folder you can find again, such as your Downloads folder.
  4. Right-click the downloaded archive and choose Extract All, or open it with your archive tool and extract it to a new folder.
  5. In the extracted folder, look for a file ending in .exe and run it. Accept any User Account Control prompt.
  6. Restart the PC when the installer asks you to, then confirm the device in Device Manager.

If you cannot see the .exe or the file extension at all, turn on extensions in File Explorer. In Windows 11, select View, then Show, then File name extensions. Windows 10 uses View and then File name extensions in the ribbon. Without extensions visible, a driver file can look like a document or an icon with no clear type.

Identify the device before you install

Do not install every package MSI offers. Each driver covers one component, and installing the wrong one will not fix the missing device.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Look for devices marked with a yellow exclamation mark, or entries under Other devices or Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the device, select Properties, and note the device name and the hardware ID shown on the Details tab under Hardware Ids.
  4. Match that device to the component list above: a Realtek name points to LAN, an AMD Wi-Fi name points to the Wi-Fi module, and a Bluetooth name points to the Bluetooth component.

If Windows has no internet access yet

Some network chipsets do not work until their driver is installed, so a fresh Windows setup can leave you offline. MSI’s guidance for this case is to download the motherboard network driver on another computer that has internet access, copy it to a USB drive, and install it on the affected PC by running its .exe after extracting it. Use the same model and Windows version selection described above.

If a device stays unknown

MSI’s general troubleshooting article on unknown devices, dated October 3, 2019, recommends the following steps. Its example uses an Intel network adapter on a different motherboard, so treat its example as illustrative only. Use the same general sequence for this AMD and Realtek board.

  • Uninstall the erroneous driver in Device Manager, if one is installed for the device, by right-clicking it and selecting Uninstall device. Tick the option to delete the driver software if it appears.
  • Select Scan for hardware changes from the Device Manager toolbar or the Action menu.
  • Download the correct package from MSI’s driver page for this model and install it.
  • Check Windows Update under Settings, then select Check for updates, and allow optional driver updates to install if they are offered.

Manual driver selection as a last resort

If you have already extracted the correct package and can see an .inf file inside it, you can point Device Manager at that folder. Right-click the device, select Update driver, choose Browse my computer for drivers, and select the folder that contains the .inf. This is a standard Windows option, not MSI’s recommended route, so use the MSI .exe first. Manual selection is more likely to fail if you pick a package for the wrong device or Windows version.

Which route applies to you

Your situation Use this route What to check
Windows is running and you have internet access Download the model and OS driver from MSI, extract it, and run the .exe Board name is PRO B550M-VC WIFI and OS version matches your PC
Windows is installed but has no network Download the network driver on another computer, copy it by USB, then run the .exe Driver is for the LAN or Wi-Fi component that is missing
A device stays unknown after installing Uninstall the bad driver, scan for hardware changes, reinstall from MSI, then check Windows Update Device name and hardware ID in Device Manager match the component you installed
You already see the correct .inf in an extracted folder Point Device Manager at that folder as a fallback The package is for your exact model and Windows version

In most cases, the extracted MSI .exe is the file you need, and an .inf is simply the component inside the package that Windows reads.
