Apurva Aggarwal built Argus Friend Brief to turn the dense company data in his family’s Argus dashboard into a plain-language research brief for his father. It uses a locally run language model to explain what changed, why it matters, evidence for both bullish and bearish cases, and what to monitor next—not to recommend trades.
What the translator is meant to do
A stock dashboard can collect prices, valuation metrics, news, filings, and investment theses without making those details easy to connect. Aggarwal describes Argus Friend Brief as a layer that translates this material into answers to five questions:
- What changed?
- Why does it matter?
- What supports the bull case?
- What supports the bear case?
- What should we monitor next?
The brief draws on Argus, a family dashboard that the author says follows 53 companies across AI infrastructure, semiconductors, power, cooling, networking, and emerging compute. The dashboard includes prices, technical metrics, peer-relative valuation, news, SEC filings, and bull/bear theses. The number of companies describes this project, not a general market dataset.

How a brief is generated
As described by Aggarwal, the application reads the Argus SQLite database using read-only and immutable options, then exports a sanitized JSON snapshot. For a brief, it gives the model evidence about one company rather than the entire dashboard.
- Prepare the evidence: The export includes current and prior metrics, signals, fundamentals, peer valuation, deterministic theses, recent news, and SEC filings. Aggarwal says it excludes personal watchlist notes, authentication data, and credentials.
- Generate locally: The application sends the selected company’s evidence catalog to Gemma 3 4B running through Ollama. The author says inference happens locally once the model is downloaded, without sending the company’s evidence to a model provider.
- Constrain the response: The model is instructed to use only the supplied evidence and run at temperature zero. Pydantic defines the structured response format, and Streamlit presents the brief.
- Validate citations and wording: The author says generated claims must cite one to three evidence IDs. The interface can show the cited values and their source dates. An unknown citation or disallowed wording triggers one repair attempt; if validation still fails, the app displays an error instead of the brief.
These are descriptions of the implementation by its creator, not findings from an independent code review or privacy audit.
Why evidence IDs and language checks matter
Short citations are easier to validate
Aggarwal reports that an early run produced valid JSON but mistyped long citation IDs, including in a repair attempt. He says he replaced them with shorter deterministic IDs, such as NVDA.E001, after which citation validation passed. In this design, the model’s prose is not meant to stand alone: a reader can inspect the supporting value and date behind a claim.

A research signal is not an investment recommendation
The author says the model once described an internal “opportunity score” in a way that risked sounding like an investment opportunity. He responded with a deterministic language guard and clearer instructions: the score ranks research for attention; it is not expected return or advice. Aggarwal says the app does not produce buy, sell, hold, price-target, or position-sizing recommendations.
A fail-closed validation path is a useful safeguard, but it is not proof that every unsupported claim or misleading phrasing will be caught. The described checks are project-level controls, not an independently verified guarantee.
What local operation changes—and what it does not establish
Running inference locally gives the creator control over where the model runs and, according to his account, avoids sending the evidence to a model provider and avoids a per-request model API fee. It also means the model must be downloaded and run on the user’s machine. Aggarwal says the app can run on a laptop, but gives no laptop model, operating system, memory requirement, speed measurement, or hardware compatibility list. The account therefore does not establish which particular computer will run it comfortably.

Local inference is not itself a security or privacy audit. The creator describes excluding certain sensitive fields and limiting optional Sentry tracing, but those statements should be understood as descriptions of his implementation, not independently confirmed data-handling results.

Preview examples versus fresh generation
Aggarwal describes a hosted preview containing saved, citation-validated examples for NVDA, VRT, and CEG, labeled as examples in the interface. Fresh generation is described as requiring a local clone and Ollama; the hosted preview examples are not equivalent to generating a new brief on the hosted site.
The author says the committed sanitized snapshot covers all 53 active companies and was refreshed after the October 2, 2026 market close. That is a time-sensitive description of the project state, not a promise that the data remains current.

What the reported testing tells you
Aggarwal reports 20 repository tests and says he also exercised the full flow with the real local model and checked the browser interface. Those are creator-reported validation steps; they are not an independent quality benchmark, a comparison against hosted models, or proof that all citations and summaries are correct.
The author also describes optional Sentry tracing for operational metadata such as latency, token counts, validation outcomes, repair attempts, and generic error types. He says prompts, tickers, responses, evidence, URLs, exception messages, and personal notes are excluded, and tracing does nothing when no Sentry DSN is configured. These are implementation claims rather than an external audit.
Where the project is useful—and where it stops
Argus Friend Brief is best understood as a readability and navigation aid over a structured research collection. Its notable design choice is to pair plain-language claims with compact, dated evidence references, then reject output that fails the app’s stated citation or wording checks. That can help a reader investigate a thesis more efficiently, but it does not replace checking original filings, news, or metrics.
Its boundary is explicit: the app is research support only. It does not tell a reader whether to buy, sell, or hold a security, set a price target, or determine a position size.
