Indonesian developer Pijar Sukma Adiluhung says he built mabims.dev after finding that a Hijri date shown on Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) website did not match the ministry’s published calendar. He later noticed that the website no longer displayed the date. His account does not establish which display was wrong, why they differed, or why the date disappeared.
What happened between Kemenag’s website and calendar?
Adiluhung describes seeing a one-day discrepancy between a date on Kemenag’s website and the ministry’s published calendar. He later found that the site had stopped displaying the date. As he puts it, “I didn’t know what exactly happened behind the scenes.” The account offers no independent record of the original date or explanation for either event, so it does not establish a software bug, a calculation error, or a deliberate removal.
The word “wrong” in the title reflects the author’s reaction to the mismatch, not an independently adjudicated finding about which Kemenag display was authoritative. The practical problem was enough to prompt a developer’s question: if an Indonesian app needs to show a Hijri date according to Kemenag, which source should it use?
Why can a Hijri date depend on its source?
Hijri dates supplied by software are not automatically interchangeable. A library or API may follow one calendar system, while a developer needs the reference used in a particular country. Adiluhung contrasts Indonesia’s Kemenag calendar with the Umm al-Qura calendar, which serves a different official context. He says dates can differ by a day; his account does not establish how often that happens across APIs or libraries.

Indonesia’s MABIMS criteria provide important context for the project. MABIMS is the grouping of religious-affairs ministers from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Kemenag says the updated criteria were adopted for Indonesian use beginning in 2022. Under Kemenag’s 2026 regulation, the relevant thresholds are a topocentric lunar altitude of at least 3° and a geocentric lunar elongation of at least 6.4°. The regulation’s English wording is translated as requiring the “minimum position of the hilal” to meet those thresholds. What does mabims.dev provide?
Adiluhung says the API is intended to provide Hijri dates for the Indonesian context. He describes its source hierarchy this way:

He also describes the project as free, open source, and usable without an API key. These details are the developer’s claims in his account of the project; they have not been independently audited here. The source hierarchy is useful to understand, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every returned date is an official government determination.

Kemenag’s regulation describes official determinations for the starts of Ramadan, Syawal, and Zulhijah as made through an isbat session using hisab (astronomical calculation) and rukyat (crescent observation), with imkanurrukyat criteria. A prepublished calendar entry or an API response is a date supplied under a calendar’s rules; it is not the isbat session or the government’s announcement. Apps that need to communicate an official month start should distinguish a projected or calendar-based date from the ministry’s determination.

What developers should check before choosing a Hijri-date source
- Jurisdiction: Confirm that the source follows the calendar reference your users expect, rather than assuming all Hijri calendars align.
- Data provenance: Find out whether dates come from an official published calendar, calculated criteria, or a combination—and what happens outside a source’s covered range.
- Purpose: Decide whether your interface needs a general calendar date or the official announcement for a significant month transition.
- Uncertainty: Where the source does not provide a date or its method is unclear, avoid presenting a generated value as an official decision.
Adiluhung’s story is a practical reminder that a date can be valid under one calendar system yet fail to match the locally intended reference. Choosing a source is therefore part of defining what an app’s displayed date means—not just selecting a date-conversion function.
