A new forum does not attract members just by being online. People need to know who it is for, see conversations worth joining, and have a reason to return. Why a new forum can feel empty

Make the first visit useful
A newcomer should be able to tell what belongs in the forum and how to participate without guessing. Seed example discussions that model the level and kind of exchange you want: ask a concrete question, invite members to share experience, and make it easy for someone with relevant knowledge to add a useful reply.

Do not wait for strangers to discover an empty site. Personally invite people who already care about the subject—such as colleagues, customers, friends, or knowledgeable contributors—and ask them to take part in genuine discussions. The goal is to create a helpful first experience, not to manufacture activity or make a quiet forum look busy.

Discourse’s guide suggests inviting “5-10 passionate people to get the conversation rolling.” That is a practical recommendation from the vendor, not a measured minimum or guarantee of success. The useful principle is to begin with people who have a real reason to contribute and who can help newcomers understand the community.
Plan how members join and return
Registration is only one step. Consider what a first-time visitor needs to understand before posting, how they can find a suitable discussion, and what would bring them back. Discourse’s guidance recommends planning onboarding, helping people move into participation in stages, and building relationships rather than relying only on software features.

Forum software can reduce operational work, but it cannot supply an audience or a clear purpose. Before choosing a format or platform, compare the practical trade-offs that matter to your community:
- Hosting and maintenance: How much setup and ongoing administration can you take on?
- Control: What control do you need over membership, moderation, and community data?
- Persistence and search: Should discussions remain easy to find and revisit, or is a more ephemeral conversation format acceptable?
- Discovery and return visits: How will members find the community and remember to come back?
- Onboarding: How much effort does a newcomer need to make before they can participate?

A practical launch sequence
- Write the audience and purpose in one clear explanation. Put it on the home page or in a visible pinned topic.
- Prepare representative conversations. Seed useful, specific discussions that show what members can ask and share.
- Invite an interested core group directly. Ask people with a genuine connection to the subject to participate and help shape the conversation.
- Make first participation straightforward. Explain expectations and help newcomers find a next step.
- Announce through existing channels. Use the places where the intended audience already reads or communicates.
- Keep showing up. Respond to contributions and build relationships; software alone does not create a recurring community.
