A useful real-time public transport map is not a moving-dot display alone. It combines a planned timetable with current departures, disruptions, trip updates, and—where available—vehicle positions, while making clear what each feed can and cannot establish. Building one for the Netherlands means choosing among national data-access routes, operator APIs, and published feeds, then treating freshness and coverage as questions to verify rather than promises.

What “real-time” means on a public transport map

A map may display several kinds of information that are often mistaken for one live feed. A static schedule describes planned service. Current departures and trip updates can report delays or timetable changes. Alerts describe disruptions. Vehicle-position data may show where a vehicle is reported to be. These layers answer different questions and can arrive with different coverage and update behavior.

For a map, “real-time” should mean that it consumes current updates, not that every vehicle is shown instantly, continuously, or accurately. A source directory can establish that particular feed files are published; it does not establish that every trip has a position, that updates arrive at a specific cadence, or that a position matches a vehicle’s actual location.

Where Dutch public transport data comes from

The Netherlands has a national access structure alongside operator-specific services. The Dutch National Access Point for Mobility Data (NTM) says NDOV portals publish both static public transport data and current travel information that can be used by services such as the NS and 9292 journey planners. That makes NDOV a useful route to investigate when a map needs data beyond one operator. NTM’s public transport overview describes the structure and its broader context.

National and aggregated access

NDOV-related sources can help connect a project to schedule data and current travel information across the public transport landscape. They are not, by themselves, a guarantee of identical coverage, format, access conditions, or freshness across every feed. The NDOV Loket also publishes technical materials for RitInfo messages and related schemas; its documentation directory includes a January 2022 publication document and a June 2024 WSDL/XSD package. NDOV Loket’s RitInfo documentation directory is relevant when evaluating those technical formats.

Operator APIs

An operator API can be a more direct fit when the map focuses on that operator’s services or needs operator-specific information. NS says its open APIs include data such as schedules, engineering works, and station information. The NS API portal is the place to inspect the available offerings and access requirements.

Departure information and published feeds

9292 describes an API covering current departures, crowd expectations, delays, timetable changes, disruptions, and flexible transport across several modes. Those features can enrich a map even when the core view is a stop or route rather than a vehicle moving on a map. See 9292’s departures API description.

OVapi’s public directory listed GTFS schedule files as well as alerts, trip updates, train updates, and vehicle positions on 6–7 October 2026. This shows that those files existed in the directory at that review time; it does not establish their completeness, accuracy, or service-level guarantees. The OVapi directory can be inspected for the published files.

How to choose a source for the map

There is no universally best source: the right choice depends on the map’s intended geography, modes, and level of detail. Compare candidates by the actual feed and access terms, rather than treating “national,” “operator,” or “real-time” as quality guarantees.

Route What the cited source establishes Questions to verify for a project
NDOV and national access NTM says NDOV portals publish static data and current travel information used by services such as NS and 9292. NTM Which modes and regions are covered by the specific feed? What format, access conditions, reuse terms, refresh behavior, and completeness apply?
NS operator APIs NS identifies schedules, engineering works, and station information among its open API data. NS API portal Does the operator-specific scope match the map? What endpoints, access conditions, update behavior, and reuse terms apply?
9292 departures API 9292 describes current departures, crowd expectations, delays, timetable changes, disruptions, and flexible transport. 9292 Which modes and locations are available for the intended use, and what are the current access and reuse conditions?
OVapi published files The directory listed schedule files, alerts, trip updates, train updates, and vehicle positions on 6–7 October 2026. OVapi directory How often are the files refreshed? How complete and reliable are they for the relevant mode and area? What terms govern reuse?

The cited descriptions establish that these routes exist, but do not answer every operational question in the table. Check the current documentation and terms for the exact source you use, and record the feed type and retrieval time for any demonstration.

What the data can—and cannot—tell the reader

A strong map distinguishes planned service from what is currently reported. Label schedule information as planned, and treat delays, alerts, trip updates, and positions as separate current-data layers. If a vehicle is missing or appears stale, the display alone does not identify why; a gap could reflect feed coverage or freshness, among other possibilities. Do not infer a specific cause without measuring it.

Any screenshot or demonstration should include the source and a timestamp or date range. This lets readers understand what was available at that moment and avoids presenting one view as proof of permanent nationwide coverage. Likewise, avoid a numeric accuracy or refresh-latency claim unless it was actually measured under stated conditions.

The scale of the system is context, not a map-quality score

NTM cites CBS figures of 20 billion train passenger-kilometres and 5.1 billion bus, tram, and metro passenger-kilometres in 2023. NTM also reports that public transport represented 12.6 percent of all passenger-kilometres in 2023. Separately, its page gives a figure of 10,000 dynamic passenger information displays without assigning that figure a year. These numbers describe the scale and information infrastructure of Dutch public transport; they do not demonstrate a particular map’s coverage or any feed’s accuracy. See NTM’s public transport page.

Keep passenger privacy separate from map data handling

NS says public transport companies and Translink use anonymised or aggregated transaction data for statistical research, and that transaction details or pseudonymised details may be retained for up to 18 months after a trip. This describes transaction-data processing; it is not evidence that a particular map uses passenger transaction data. A map’s own privacy practices must be described separately, based on the data it collects and how it handles it. Read NS’s open information management privacy statement for the stated transaction-data practices.
