A leaderboard can make it fun to compare coding activity with friends, as long as it is clear about what it counts. A total of commits or lines changed is a measure of recorded activity—not a dependable ranking of who is the best or most productive developer.
The title alone does not establish which platform or counting method the project uses. The details below explain what to disclose and, if the leaderboard uses GitHub, the platform rules that affect its numbers and privacy.
What does the leaderboard count?
Start by naming the unit shown on the board. “Code written” could mean additions, commits, files changed, or another measure; those are not interchangeable. State the source of the data, the time window, how the total is calculated, and whether it includes private repositories or only activity visible to the project.

If the board counts additions and deletions, make the distinction visible. Additions are lines introduced in the measured changes; deletions are lines removed. Neither number, alone or combined, tells readers whether a change was useful, maintainable, or complete. A large rewrite can produce many changed lines, while a small fix or careful review can matter greatly without adding much code.

If it uses GitHub, what affects the count?
GitHub’s contribution graph is not a complete ledger of everything a developer does. For a commit to appear as a contribution, its email address must be associated with the account, it must be in a standalone repository and an eligible branch, and the user must have a qualifying relationship with that repository. GitHub may also limit the issues, pull requests, and discussions it displays. See GitHub’s profile contributions reference.
GitHub also provides repository statistics through its API, but the endpoints describe different things. Weekly commit activity reports weekly commit counts; contributor activity reports contributor-level additions, deletions, and commit counts. A leaderboard should identify which endpoint and fields it uses rather than presenting these as equivalent measures. - GitHub’s repository statistics exclude merge commits.
- Contributor activity also excludes empty commits.
- For repositories with 10,000 or more commits, the contributor-activity endpoint returns zero for addition and deletion totals.
These rules can make API totals differ from a person’s expectations or from another way of counting activity. In particular, a returned zero for additions and deletions at that repository size should not be interpreted as proof that no code changed.

Show the start and end of the period and the timezone used to group activity by day. GitHub contribution-graph dates can follow different timezone rules: commit timestamps use the commit’s timezone; issues and pull requests opened on GitHub.com use the browser’s timezone; and API-created issues or pull requests use the timestamp or timezone provided in the API request. Those differences matter for activity close to midnight. The rules are documented in GitHub’s contribution reference.

GitHub’s repository-statistics API uses cached calculations. A request can return HTTP 202 when statistics are not ready; GitHub starts a background calculation, and the caller should wait and retry. The cache is keyed to the default branch SHA and resets when that branch is pushed. A dashboard should handle that response rather than treating it as a completed result. Do GitHub contribution graphs show private contributions?
Public contributions are visible to anyone who can access GitHub. A user can choose to make private contributions visible on their profile; people who cannot access the private repository then see daily contribution counts, not specific details about the work. This is different from granting a leaderboard access to private repository data.

Get each friend’s informed consent before displaying their activity. Explain what the board collects, whether it includes private work, who can see the results, and how long the data is retained. Do not assume that a visible contribution graph grants permission to copy, combine, or republish someone’s activity in a separate ranking. GitHub describes contribution visibility in its profile contributions reference.
Does a code leaderboard measure developer productivity?
No single activity total can establish that. The SPACE framework describes developer productivity across satisfaction and well-being, performance, activity, communication and collaboration, and efficiency and flow. Its authors—Nicole Forsgren, Margaret-Anne Storey, Chandra Maddila, Thomas Zimmermann, Brian Houck, and Jenna Butler—write: “Developer productivity is about more than an individual’s activity levels or the efficiency of the engineering systems relied on to ship software, and it cannot be measured by a single metric or dimension.” The framework appeared in ACM Queue in February 2021: The SPACE of Developer Productivity.

Use the leaderboard as a friendly snapshot of one chosen activity measure. Label it accordingly, avoid treating a high score as proof of better work, and remember that the implementation determines whether generated code, copied code, or other low-value changes affect the total.
