A random wheel is not just a circle with colored slices. It is an interactive tool with two separate jobs: choose an eligible entry according to a clear rule, then show that choice in a way people can understand and use. Building one highlights decisions that apply to many browser tools: how data is defined, how randomness is handled, how controls work without a mouse, and what saving or sharing actually means.

Start with the entries, not the wheel graphic

The list is the tool’s data model. Before drawing segments, define what counts as one entry and how the app treats the list users provide. Those choices directly affect the result.

Decide how to parse and represent entries

  • Choose how pasted text becomes entries, including whether each line is a separate item.
  • Specify what happens to blank lines and duplicate labels. Two identical labels can represent two chances or one unique option; those are different rules.
  • Decide whether users can disable entries, assign weights, or remove a selected winner.

These are not merely import details. WheelToss, for example, documents paste/import, duplicate entries, weights, disabling entries, and winner removal as distinct features. Its choices illustrate why list behavior should be visible to users rather than buried in an animation.

Define what “fair” means for this wheel

Fairness comes from the selection rule, not from how convincing the spin looks. For equal odds, every eligible entry must have the same chance. If users can assign weights, the tool should say that weights change the odds. If duplicate labels count separately, that should be clear too: a label appearing twice in a list has twice the representation of a label appearing once when each entry has equal weight.

Repeats are also a rule choice. Independent spins can select the same entry more than once. A process that guarantees everyone one turn needs to remove winners or otherwise exclude previous results. Wheel of Names describes independent spins and recommends removing a winner when repeats should be avoided; WheelToss documents both leaving the wheel unchanged and automatically removing a winner. Those are product-specific examples, not universal defaults.

Separate the random choice from the animation

A useful design is to choose the result first, then animate the wheel to that result. WheelToss describes an implementation that selects an index with crypto.getRandomValues() and rejection sampling before calculating the rotation. In that design, easing, duration, and frame rate change the presentation, not the selected outcome. This describes WheelToss’s stated method; it does not establish how every wheel—or the tool behind this title—works.

This separation makes the behavior easier to reason about: the selection rule determines the winner, while the animation communicates it. A dramatic spin can create anticipation, but it is not evidence that the draw is unbiased. Any claim about a particular project should match its actual code.

Rendering is a separate implementation choice

Canvas is one possible way to draw a wheel. MDN describes the Canvas API as a means of drawing graphics through scripting. A tool can also use ordinary HTML controls for the list, spin action, and result text. The available sources do not establish which rendering surface or application architecture the title’s author used.

Make the result usable without a pointer

A wheel should not require someone to drag, click, or interpret a moving graphic to complete the task. WCAG 2.2’s keyboard guidance says functionality should be operable through a keyboard interface, subject to an exception for functions whose operation depends on a movement path rather than endpoints. For a random wheel, that means the spin action needs a keyboard-operable control, and the selected result should be available as text—not communicated only by slice position, color, or motion. This is a design implication of the guidance, not an accessibility audit of the products cited here.

Explain what saving and sharing do

“Saved” and “shared” can describe very different behaviors. A list might remain only in browser storage, be saved to a cloud account, or be included in a shareable link. Each option has different implications for access across devices and for privacy.

Wheel of Names documents local and cloud saving as separate options and describes a shared link as a snapshot that must be shared again after changes. WheelToss says its list stays in the browser and that sharing the tool link does not attach the user’s list. These are claims about those products, not a general promise about browser tools. A builder should describe the actual storage and sharing flow and avoid calling data “private” without checking how storage, analytics, and links work.

Be clear about the tool’s limits

Wheel size affects readability, import, and result presentation. Wheel of Names, for example, documents a display limit for names and a different import path for larger lists. That limit belongs to its product and should not be applied to another wheel. The broader design question is whether a tool remains usable with the list sizes it claims to support, and what users should do when a list is too large to display clearly.

For any specific tool, a first-person account of its stack, testing, performance, or user feedback should come from the project itself. Public documentation can show useful design options, but it cannot establish which options the author implemented or what they learned from building and testing their own code.
