MoniMac is a free, open-source macOS utility whose author says it puts configurable system metrics in the menu bar and adds per-app diagnostics, alerts, and a finder for local development servers. Those features may suit Mac users who want more than a glance at CPU and memory use—but compatibility and the current installation steps need to be checked against the release you download.

What MoniMac says it can monitor

According to the project author, MoniMac can place CPU, memory, GPU, network, and temperature indicators in the menu bar. Each item can display a value, a graph, or both; the article describes the graphs as 60-second sparklines. Items can be reordered or hidden, and may show warnings when a metric crosses a threshold. These are author-reported features, not results of an independent installation or test. Read the project article.

A popover is described as bringing together current metrics, live history, per-core CPU load, and lists of the busiest apps. Its views cover CPU, memory, GPU, network, disk, and battery. The stated aim is to make a quick menu-bar glance useful while retaining more detail when you open the app.

Per-app diagnostics and alerts

The author says MoniMac attributes CPU, memory, GPU, network, disk, and power activity to individual apps, grouping helper processes with their parent app. It also reportedly provides battery details, Bluetooth device charge levels, per-app volume, sensor temperatures, and fan speeds.

Threshold-based notifications are described for sustained high CPU use, rapid memory growth, heavy disk writes, and background uploads. The project article gives examples such as CPU remaining above a threshold for two minutes and memory increasing by 1 GB in 10 minutes. These are examples of configurable alerts as described by the author, not independently verified defaults or guarantees. A quit sheet reportedly asks an app to quit normally rather than presenting force-quit as the first action. Project details.

What the developer-server finder adds

MoniMac’s Projects view is aimed at developers with local services left running after work. The author says it discovers local development servers, groups them by repository, and shows each server’s port, uptime, and memory use. It can flag servers that have been idle for days and offer one-click stopping.

This server-discovery feature is the clearest distinction from a conventional menu-bar meter: it addresses lingering development processes, not just overall system load. As with the other capabilities, the available account is the author’s description; the feature has not been independently tested here.

Compatibility and installation need release-by-release checking

The project article identifies Apple silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 14.2 or later as requirements, with no Intel support. Those are article-era requirements, not independently confirmed current compatibility information. Before downloading, check the current release notes or project instructions to confirm the minimum macOS version and supported processor architecture.

Apple Late 2018 Mac Mini with 3.0GHz Intel Core i5 (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) Space Gray (Renewed)
  • 6-core Intel Core i5 processor
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
  • Ultrafast SSD storage
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, one HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB 3 ports

The article-era instructions describe downloading a DMG from GitHub Releases, moving MoniMac to Applications, and removing the quarantine attribute in Terminal because that release was not notarized. Do not assume that workaround is still necessary or safe for a newer release: signing and notarization status can change. Follow the current release’s installation guidance, and do not remove quarantine protection unless you have verified the developer and understand the security implications.

How MoniMac compares with Stats

Stats is a documented open-source alternative. Its official repository describes modules for CPU, GPU, memory, disk, network, battery, sensors, and Bluetooth, along with manual DMG and Homebrew installation. The README states support for macOS 12 and newer and an MIT license. It also says unsolicited pull requests are generally not accepted, while translations and language fixes are welcome.
