Branchport is a Chrome extension designed to show which Git worktree and branch is serving each localhost port. Its Chrome Web Store listing describes browser labels, branch-prefixed tab titles, worktree-based tab grouping, and a local server list with port and process details. It requires a separately installed helper and Node.js 20 or newer, according to the listing; these are the developer’s published claims, not independently tested results.
What Branchport says it does
Branchport targets a common multi-worktree question: “Which branch uses which port?” The Chrome Web Store listing says it associates localhost servers with their Git worktrees and branches, then surfaces that information in several places:
- Labels on localhost pages and branch-prefixed browser tab titles.
- Tab grouping by worktree.
- A list of local development servers that includes port and process details.
- A warning when a worktree has more than one port.
- Actions to open a server’s folder in an editor, Terminal, or Finder, and to stop a server safely.
These are features advertised by the listing, not the result of an independent test. A port and process-directory association can help identify a server’s apparent project, but a port number alone does not prove which files a running process has loaded.

Why Git worktrees make the mapping useful
Git worktrees let one repository have multiple working directories, so developers can check out and work on more than one branch at a time. Each directory can run its own local development server, which makes it easy to lose track of which localhost port belongs to which branch.
Git’s git worktree list command reports each worktree’s path, revision, and checked-out branch, or whether it has a detached HEAD. That gives a developer a command-line way to inspect worktrees; Branchport’s advertised purpose is to bring the branch-to-server context into the browser and a server list.
What you need to install it
Branchport’s Chrome Web Store listing says it needs a local helper installed with npx branchport install, Node.js 20 or newer, and supports macOS, Linux, and Windows. The listing also says data stays on the user’s computer and that the developer does not collect or use user data. Treat those privacy statements as the developer’s disclosure, not as an independent privacy audit.
How it differs from Chrome DevTools workspace connection
Chrome DevTools has an automatic workspace connection feature for local development, but it solves a different problem. When DevTools is open on a localhost page, it can request /.well-known/appspecific/com.chrome.devtools.json. The documented JSON identifies a project root and UUID so DevTools can connect a workspace folder, and local access may require user permission.

Related worktree and port tools
GitPortree is a Visual Studio Code extension whose marketplace listing describes worktree management, service port assignment, and branch-based interface colors. That places it in the broader multi-branch workflow category, but its listed features do not establish that it performs Branchport’s browser-based identification.
Another adjacent example is Galactic, described in a macOS side-project post as an app that assigns routed local domains to services in Git worktrees. The product details and a commenter’s remark about forgetting which branch uses which port are anecdotal context, not independent validation or evidence of how common the problem is.
