A simple detector can flag when an athlete’s results on a specific skill drop under a deliberately pressure-increased condition compared with their ordinary baseline. That is a performance pattern worth examining—not proof that anxiety caused it, a prediction of future failure, or a diagnosis. The title alone does not establish what this prototype senses, how it sets a flag, or whether it has been tested, so those details cannot be responsibly supplied here.

What “choking under pressure” means

Choking is not just making a mistake in competition. Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) defines it as an “acute and considerable decrease in performance because of increased performance anxiety and lack of perceived control in response to pressure” in its 2026 position statement, Performance Under Pressure in Sport. The definition points to a substantial change in performance in a pressure context, not a single poor attempt.

That distinction matters for a DIY detector: it can compare outcomes, but it cannot directly establish what the athlete felt or why performance changed. Pressure is also difficult to define and measure consistently. A 2024 meta-study of 29 qualitative articles, later included in a 2026 journal issue, noted the lack of a validated measure of pressure in the quantitative literature it discussed (Hufton et al.).

What a defensible personal detector needs

A useful comparison starts with one skill and an outcome that can be recorded the same way across conditions. The detector should make its comparison visible rather than turning a hidden score into an authoritative-sounding label.

  1. Choose a repeatable skill. Use a defined action, such as a particular shot or serve, rather than “playing well” across an entire game.
  2. Choose the metric before testing. Record a meaningful outcome such as accuracy, distance from a target, or successful execution. Keep the definition consistent.
  3. Build a baseline from multiple comparable attempts. A single ordinary attempt is a weak reference point. Keep relevant conditions—equipment, target, and task setup—as similar as practical.
  4. Introduce and document a pressure condition. This might involve evaluative observation, competition-like stakes, or a simulated audience. What feels pressuring differs among athletes, so record what changed rather than assuming the condition affects everyone equally.
  5. Record the athlete’s own view of pressure alongside the outcome. A brief rating of perceived pressure or anxiety can add context. Any physiological signal, if a device actually collects one, is only an indirect arousal measure; it does not identify choking by itself.
  6. Show the trials and state the flag threshold. A reader should be able to see the baseline, pressure-condition results, and rule used to flag a change. There is no universally validated individual-detector threshold established by the cited sources.

A sports training log book can be a practical, optional way to record trials and their conditions; it is a record-keeping aid, not a detector. The 2026 meta-analysis notes variation in task types and performance measures and calls for more ecologically valid designs (Zeng et al.).

What a flagged change can—and cannot—tell you

If results repeatedly worsen under a defined pressure condition, the detector can flag a pattern for review. It cannot establish that anxiety caused the change. Outcome data alone also cannot reveal whether the athlete was distracted, overthinking movement, affected by an inconsistent setup, or responding to some other factor.

Two broad explanations are discussed in sport psychology. Distraction accounts propose that pressure pulls attention away from task-relevant information. Self-focus, also called explicit-monitoring, accounts propose that an athlete consciously monitors a well-learned movement and disrupts its automatic execution. These are proposed mechanisms, not conclusions a performance-only detector can distinguish (ESSA; Gröpel and Mesagno).

Do not treat one miss, a short run of attempts, an elevated heart rate, or a detector flag as an anxiety assessment or stable trait. Treat it as a prompt to review the skill, task design, and pressure context with the athlete and, where useful, a coach or qualified professional.

Why pressure effects are not one-size-fits-all

Pressure can arise from different sources and may not affect athletes in the same way. In a 2011 study of 45 experienced field hockey players taking penalty strokes, groups exposed to self-presentation pressure experienced choking, while a motivational-pressure group showed decreased anxiety and improved performance under pressure. That single study illustrates why “pressure” should not be treated as one uniform condition or generalized to every sport (Mesagno, Harvey, and Janelle).

In a separate 2010 study, 201 participants took two sets of 15 basketball free throws, with video recording during the second set used as a pressure manipulation. The authors’ model associated reinvestment with anxiety and self-focus, while perceived control helped performance under pressure. These findings describe that study’s participants and setup, not a guaranteed response for an individual athlete (Hill et al.).

Strategies athletes can explore

Interventions should be considered in light of the sport, skill, pressure context, and outcome being measured. A 2026 meta-analysis covering 21 studies reported pooled estimates for motor accuracy (Hedges’ g = 0.660), executional success (g = 0.444), and target deviation (g = 0.301). It reported a pooled estimate of 0.455 for closed-skill sports; effects for open-skill tasks were less robust after adjustment for publication bias. These are group-level research estimates, not expected gains for one athlete or this prototype. The authors called for more research in ecologically valid competitive environments (Zeng et al., 2026).

Approach What it aims to do Evidence and qualification
Pre-performance routines Give an athlete a repeatable sequence of attention and action before execution. The 2018 systematic review found recurring support; outcomes still depend on task and context.
Quiet-eye training Train a deliberate visual-attention pattern before or during a skill. The 2018 review found recurring support, and it was among approaches included in the 2026 synthesis; this is not a guaranteed individual remedy.
Self-talk Use planned verbal cues to guide attention or response. Included in the 2026 meta-analysis; effectiveness can vary with task demands.
Mindfulness Practice noticing thoughts and sensations without letting them dictate the next action. Included in the 2026 meta-analysis; pooled findings do not prescribe an individual program.
Pressure acclimatization Gradually rehearse performance in pressure-like conditions. The 2018 review found recurring support. ESSA recommends a considered progression rather than simply making practice more stressful.
Other studied methods Examples include left-hand contraction and rational emotive behavior therapy. Included in the 2026 synthesis. The 2018 review found mixed results for analogy learning, and null findings for goal setting, neurofeedback, and reappraisal cues in the studies it reviewed.

The 2018 systematic review covered 47 empirical studies available through April 2017. It also reported that dual-task methods could help performance under pressure but harm training performance, a trade-off that cautions against adopting a technique without considering when it is used (Gröpel and Mesagno). In the 2026 meta-analysis, effects were more consistent for closed-skill tasks than open-skill tasks, so a strategy that helps a repeatable, self-paced action may not transfer neatly to a changing game situation.

Adding pressure to practice carefully

ESSA’s 2026 position statement recommends developing strategies before adding pressure, introducing it gradually, avoiding excessive pressure practice or pressure conditions while skills are still being learned, explaining the reason for the exercise, monitoring and adjusting it, and debriefing afterward. This is professional guidance to adapt to the athlete and setting, not a rigid recipe.

For a detector, that guidance also makes the comparison more interpretable: document what changed and review the athlete’s experience, rather than escalating pressure simply to produce a stronger flag.
